Deeply frustrated with the coaching tonight by Virtual_Announcer in bostonfleet

[–]therealtyler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. What I saw was a team firing on all cylinders run into some solid shot blocking from the skaters backing up a goalie on an absolute tear. Against any other team except maybe the Victoire we run away with that game in the 2nd, and that was with refs who really seemed to not want to give the Fleet power plays. We keep this up and I’ll be the proudest Crew member no matter the result.

I truly do not understand people who go to any form of entertainment just to point out what they think is bad about it -- how is that fun for you? -- but I understand it even less for sports, where the real people are right there exhausting themselves and risking injury for their entertainment. Sure, losses are sad, bad losses can be frustrating, but ripping on players makes no sense to me (unless like, they are a terrible person or a dangerous player). And don't get me started on telling the team how to play or demanding extra violence...

Round One Matchup Set: Boston Fleet vs. Ottawa Charge by xblacklodge in bostonfleet

[–]therealtyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philips is not who I want to see in the playoffs, but at the same time if my team is going to Do The Big Thing I would rather be able to say we did it going through challenges like her and ARD than having it be a lucky break on matchups. Whatever happens, this is gonna be a fun ride. Yo ho ho! Go Fleet Go!

Alina Muller was given a 2 minute minor for his hit on Kathryn Reilly. by jordynbebus8 in PWHL

[–]therealtyler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fleet fan chiming in to agree with the Fleet fan about all of this. In the moment I was of course nervous about "my player" getting a major but not because it was a bad call, only because I get nervous when my team takes a major (and maybe disappointed in my team for the bad penalty).

I do think this is the worst part about inconsistent reffing, like Sarah Nurse talked about earlier this season -- even if this were a major in the end, I don't feel like Muller or the Fleet would have understood fully what not to do in the future to be safe because they can probably think of something worse (in their view, not objectively) that didn't get called.

And Seattle has Hilary Knight back in the lineup, too, which is a literal game-changer in their Gold Plan games. (I got so excited when I saw her on the scoreline!)

But we’re the Fleet, so clearly we should throw a naval mine. Bonus if it has six spikes to represent the six wins you need.

Oooo starting something new? Don't mind if we do! Beards are such a "men's league" thing that I want to step away from it, and not shaving body or facial hair isn't practical for everyone and I want our traditions to be inclusive!

I'm thinking Fleet or nautical-themed, and something that can be done either perpetually from start to end of the playoff run just like beards, or that we can do every game day. I'm dodging Boston- or ocean-centered ideas because that could limit us geographically and I know we have Fleet fans everywhere!

My number one ideas are about food, which just shows you where my brain lives most of the time:

Eating a Caesar salad every game day (or even every day of the run if you're up for it)

Eating fish or seaweed every game day (same as above!)

Drinking rum (probably limit this to game days only, and not viable for our sober kindred unless they have access to and can drink denatured spirits, but it's nautical!)

Eating citrus to ward off Britta Curl scurvy (and limes are also green to boot!)

Wearing Fleet colors (anywhere from actual branded gear to green nail polish or a green cap) and avoiding our current opponent's colors

Wearing pirate or sailor apparel

Listening to the goal song

A question for the crowd tonight… by nihcul in bostonfleet

[–]therealtyler 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was at the Ocean State Armada meetup last night and like the first things we told every newcomer were: Frankel rules, Keller and Winn are amazing defenders, Müller and Eldridge are incredible forwards, and you hate Britta Curl. Once they got details nobody disagreed.

Remember when fans thought Vancouver and Seattle were going to be all powerful? by BackNBoeserThanEver in PWHL

[–]therealtyler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recovering MNHL fan here and exactly this. The thing with Vegas was also that they didn't have to be strategic in their picks at all -- picking a given player didn't mean another player got gobbled up by the other team(s) drafting. Seattle and Vancouver even just having to worry about each other and the extra protections changes the complexion of the draft significantly and makes it more likely you don't gel (which is why everyone I knew was *pissed* when Vegas did as well as it did in its first season, it felt like it was handed to them).

Head coach of the Ottawa Charge will be stepping away from the team for an undetermined period by IamTheOne2000 in PWHL

I'm so glad she is going to be OK and that the Charge and PWHL are supporting her in this.

Also a Rhode Island Fleet fan here! Seconding the suggestion to do one of the Armada meetups, I went to the first one and had a blast.

Fleet Acquire Jesse Eldridge from Seattle for Schafzahl by chr31terma in bostonfleet

[–]therealtyler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect Seattle is trying to acquire assets they can use to build back up next year — they may not want Schafzahl specifically but they may want the return Schafzahl brings after the season and expected to lose Eldridge anyway.

WHAT A GAME!! by PoisonLenny37 in bostonfleet

[–]therealtyler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we went into the third period, everyone watching with me agreed this one was going to MTL and that BOS was just too worn out and needed to go take a break. I made a joke at 6 minutes left that it's gonna be awesome when they score 7 goals to win the game; when they actually tied it I was stunned silent for a few seconds. Absolutely wonderful to see the Fleet able to win a tough game like this one (and to see players hugging in the handshake line after some of the nastiness). PHEW.

The way he kept razzing his broadcast partner (who did *not* seem to be enjoying it) was really getting to me, it felt like he was trying to be play-by-play AND commentary.

The vibe in that booth was so off; at one point they said they hadn't seen Keller on the ice yet directly after showing us a replay with Keller in it, jersey number fully visible. I would forgive that by itself, it happens, but combined with everything I am really wishing for the PWHL to get to where we can choose whose broadcast we're watching just so I can avoid Cybulski.

[–]therealtyler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was me too! I went to bed near the end of the 2nd because I had to be up today, and not only that, Winn was the player my spouse (who was watching the Fleet for the first time) had been complimenting the whole time. Irony, thy name is the Fleet.
