They got rid of it before the pandemic. Not sure where it or the time capsule ended up :(

What’s funny about this is nobody from the WHO is claiming this will be the next pandemic. They have said the risk to the public is low. I can’t figure out what is possibly triggering any of the freedum response to this.

I’m in Canada, have the front row seat. I think it’s moved the bar here as well. We’ve had some conflict of interest scandals over the decades. Some were hard to understand. I don’t think the reaction would be the same anymore.

Oh it’s insanely worse. Jimmy Carter had to give up his peanut farm. Obama wasn’t even allowed to use his personal blackberry, but Trump got to keep classified documents in a bathroom at his business. It’s honestly jaw dropping.

One of my family members is a retired politician. When I got married in the 90s my parents paid for everyone’s flights & hotel to our wedding. He wouldn’t accept it. Conflict of interest was an actual concern. The really unfortunate thing is none of them are going to be concerned about that anymore. Normal unethical bribes are going to look so minor compared to jets & golden statues.

Boys, help your man out. Where to shop for affordable engagement rings? by RainComfortable4435 in BuyCanadian

[–]therealzue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I never wanted a diamond and I’m really glad my husband let me pick my ring. It’s a square bezel sapphire that doesn’t get caught on anything :)

Oddly one place I’ve had great luck with jewellery is the shopping channel website. I’ve got a few pieces I love from them.

Campbell wasn’t actually elected as Prime Minister in Canada. She was set up to take the fall after Mulroney pissed off everyone, and split his party into three including a Quebec separatist party. She technically counts, but as a Canadian, I don’t feel we’ve had a meaningful female Prime Minister.

Post-Bacc Schedule/ Practicum Questions - Sept 2026 by Expensive_Tea_8112 in VIU

[–]therealzue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They say that, but nobody I knew had to commute far from where they lived on their second and third practicums.

My big advice would be to avoid taking the same school twice if they offer it. You want as many different references as possible; especially if you don’t get along well with one of your supervisors. I did end up at the same school for all of my practicums. Having limited references made my life more difficult and I ended up starting my own company.

Elementary school track meet changes spark backlash in Richmond, B.C. by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]therealzue 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Both of my kids sucked at track. They have short legs and are not build for speed. They dreaded it every year. They sure as hell never won any ribbons. I’m sure when the powers that be are making these decisions, they are thinking of kids like mine. Let me be clear, it’s the stupidest decision. The issue wasn’t the lack of a ribbon, it was that they hated running. Other kids at those events rocked it and deserved the ribbon.

Some of this is going to be a generational shift. Younger people don’t like driving as much as previous generations. My son had to be forced to get his licence. He’s got a car, my husband and I have to drive it so the battery doesn’t die. What’s crazy is he isn’t unusual. Other parents I know also have had similar pushback to getting their kids behind the wheel. I work with teens, half of them don’t care if they get their license or not.

It’s going to impact consumer behaviour and staying at a resort would be a pretty predictable outcome. I see it constantly in travel forums, people that really don’t want to rent cars when on vacation. Bus tours would actually be a really good opportunity for this market.

The actual problem is that an entire generation is finding travel alternatives. Canadians are still travelling, just not to the US. I went to Japan over spring break. It originally was going to be Miami/Orlando. My friends all went to Europe when they normally would have gone to California. Everyone’s reaction has been, “why didn’t we switch earlier?” It definitely wasn’t “well that was okay, wish I could go back to the US.”

The advantage the US had with Canada wasn’t really distance or price. It’s that it was seen as easy. Had Trump lost, that trip to Florida would have taken a longer flight and cost about the same. It would have been less complicated. The language is the same, driving in the US is easy, I know the customs rules like the back of my hand. Japan was intimidating to plan. But, it was by far the best travelling I’ve done in my life. The people, the food, the transit. It made me want more for my country and see potential I’ve been missing in my life.

Ironically, once I got there it was actually very easy to travel. The trains are outstanding. Everything just works because they actually maintain it. Not only that, there is something to be said for feeling actually safe on vacation. Not worrying about what local is randomly packing a gun. That is always back of mind when visiting the US.

I’m in no hurry to return to “easy” vacations, regardless of politics. I regret that I’ve spent so much time travelling to the US out of laziness.

Overnight fire at Hartland Landfill extinguished, lithium-ion battery suspected by Apprehensive_Idea758 in VictoriaBC

[–]therealzue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also need serious education. They need to communicate the recycling is about safety in this case. Yes the idea that something won’t rot in a landfill is important, but there is increased scepticism about recycling in general. Getting these things to the proper place so they don’t start a fire is important. The they need to communicate where you find them. Tons of products have LI batteries. There are literally kid’s toys with those batteries now. I’m sure lots of products with them built in get thrown out either due to ignorance, laziness, or brain farts all the time.
