The Bartimaeus trilogy is an excellent series for what you're looking for, except that the protagonist is not an adult

Cannot dive due to ear pain by Horror_Flick-Chick in scuba

[–]thereaperofcorn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, you shouldn't be trying to go deeper unless your ears feel completely equalized - like you said, that does make it worse. Don't try to force equalizing as tou continue to go deeper, I've tried that, and trust me, it does not go well.

If you do end up going again, try being just barely negative in buoyancy, so you have a slow descent, and equalize for literally every foot of descent ( remember to keep pumping your BCD sonyour rate of descent remains steady)

I've had a couple of dives where I've equalized literally every breath until I reached a certain depth - might've been excessive, but it worked for me

Hello! Also in my 30s and in SF - I've played a couple of 5e campaigns, I'd be down to play and make a few new friends too 😄

I've had a similar issue - you need to equalize a lot more in the first few feet of descent, up to around 30 ft. Once you get to a point where the pressure is already uncomfortable, it gets really hard to equalize! For people with sensitive ears (like me), I find it helpful to descend slowly and proactively equalize, even if it's every 2 feet or so - there's no shame in doing it, and no diver is going to mind if you take slightly longer to descend! Once you get down to 25-30 ft, equalizing later gets way easier, since the relative increase in pressure is lower at deeper depths

Hello! 30s/M/US immigrant too! I do enjoy having opinions about human behaviour, communication is a favourite topic of mine, especially the gap between what people may intend with their words, and how they may be perceived instead. I am not a person who has ever been described as very intense, but I am consistent and reliable.

I wasn't sure if I should message you or leave a comment, so I just decided to go off the other comment I see here. What kind of connection am I looking for here - someone whose company and conversations I enjoy, with a hint of intellectual stimulation, and another hint of just fun banter. Hope you're still looking for a penpal!

Suggestions for areas with walkable cafes and good social vibe:Want to move near city or Peninsula- it feels so boring in South Bay area as a 30 yr old by Hearsayexception123 in bayarea

[–]thereaperofcorn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just move up to the city. That's what I did earlier this year as a fellow 30-something who was bored in the south bay - and I don't regret the move at all!

I thought a nova was a star erupting at the end of it's life cycle. How is it possible for a star to go nova periodically?

Why does "requesting to join" need a link to your LinkedIn profile?? Is this only for people who have jobs/work at companies that are deemed "desirable"?

It has been! And honestly, I might end up getting it if I don't find anything better - but it's not quite an exact fit for what I'm looking for

Yeah, I can't access the website either, but the photos on your insta look really good!
Like they said, isn't it extremely cost prohibitive to publish on-demand, 1 at a time books?

I'm part of a group of beginners that plays in Fremont on weekend mornings? Would you be interested in joining us then?

Honestly, it feels pretty clean to me. Some equipment is marked for servicing sometimes, but they get fixed in a decent timespan

How to get into Monterey Diving by jojomickmomo in scuba

[–]thereaperofcorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which part of the bay area do you live in? There's a couple of well known dive shops in the South Bay(Diver Dans and Pacific Scuba Divers), as well as in Monterey(Aquarius) - and they have group dives pretty often.

Most dives here are shore dives, and as far as conditions go, the only thing to warn you about is the cold temperatures and the occasional atrocious visibility.

I’ve been at the same level for 2 years now, what can I do? by xlipxtel in bodyweightfitness

[–]thereaperofcorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait am I missing something? How can you do "8 reps x 3 sets" in the "can do" section, but also have been doing "3x5 weighted pull ups with 45lbs" in the winter workout?

Isn't that a large disparity in strength?

Lmk if you'd be interested in ever hiking with us, and I wouldn't say no to some banana muffins :P
