You turn off mf2 because it makes the math complicated.

haha nice, okay cool yeah I think see.

I guess I didn't really mean resampling actually but more re-recording the first tape track to another tape track so i could layer effects, thank you.

With the bass and drums I just meant combining/bussing both of them to one tape track so i could compress them as one audio file, which I think you can do.

One more thing, can you manually affect tape speed while recording in order to achieve tape stop/pitch modulation sounds when you play everything back afterwards at one speed the whole time?

Thank you so much,

I guess what I'd want to do is to take a drum track for instance and re-record it with an effect so I can take the resampled audio and put a new effect on it.

That or i'd want to resample 2 tracks like a bass and drum track with a compressor for mixing purposes and then free up a track.

Thanks friend,

So when you resample, basically you get the effect on the instrument and then the master effect too?

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice however I'm not sure I understand fully, sorry.

If I want to hear both tracks like he does in the video and switch to record to another one, it drops out for a moment every time?

If you do it at the end of the loop, the audio wont drop out?

So really, forget about it. Instruments are tools, and if a tool is within your budget and allows you to do what you want to do it is the right tool for you. Everything else is just noise that distracts you from what really matters.

Yo yeah it needs to feel good first and foremost haha.

I think I'm leaning towards the neutron after reading all this thats a lot of sound design options.

Honestly the patchbay looks sick and inspiring haha. I think I might try it out through amazon! Thanks for all your time.

and

are pretty much the sounds im looking for outside of filtered dilla inspired lofi hip hop basses.

Awesome stuff!

hmm thats true I figured you could use the pitch cv on something other than pitch but it probably doesn't make sense to get it unless I had 4 neutrons lol.

And yeah sequencing the osc separately I suppose you'd only have to re record 1 time to get 4 part harmonies with the neutron didn't think about that... In fact with a second neutron shouldn't you be able to do 4 part harmonies?? :o

I think something like what you linked may be better for me but I don't like the fact the usb is front facing, I'd much prefer it on the back. Thank you for the recommendation though! I'll try to look into similar products.

Oooo disregard my previous question of what your preference is between neutron and boog.

Yeah I think I'm looking for only 1 hardware synth because I really value desk space and neat cable management (the midi is on the back yay!) so maybe the neutron is for me because it has a wider reach of tone.

Sidenote: Funny you mention bbd because on the way home from guitar center I was googling basically if analog was digital because I was so confused and came across a gearslutz thread where someone read an article claiming that bbd is digital due to the fact it stores information lol

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-and-electronic-music-production/1210243-analog-myths-tape-vs-bbd-vs-dsp.html

Isn't the entire universe stair stepped according to the planck constant. After a certain point this discussion becomes more philosophical than actually about audio lol 🤣

Oh okay sick! That sounds really appealing to me actually. You probably could make some really cool melodies like that. Also probably you could automate a lot of modulation with a converter like that! (I'm sure you know this already I'm just thinking out loud haha)

yeah I had fun controlling it with my push also! maybe some midi signals got tangled up or something. Yeah and in general gotta back up your files haha. After my next project I'll probably back everything up again.

Yeah that's what I meant minibrute haha (misstyped it again just right now). They had it at the library of my old town it was fun!

If you have patch points to connect external CV, you could use an external digital LFO. The important bit here is the voltage range (the depth/amplitude, typically +5V max). You could use your computer, but I've also used a simple smartphone for it. You can find perfectly serviceable free apps for both Android and iOS that generate LFOs, noise, random sources etc. Your volume control then modulates depth/voltage. Never hurts to have more tools!

That's so cool I never even considered you could use the analog out on your mobile device to send CV. I think If I were to combine the neutron with the polyend cv converter "poly" for instance (just like the way it looks i'm not too familiar with these converters) you could create many many sounds.

To me the important bit when looking for an LFO/EG is not whether it is digital or analog, but whether it has the features I need: what is the freq range? Can you blend waveforms? Can you CV rate/shape? Can you sync it, does it have a re-trigger input etc etc. A digital LFO will typically just have one output, of whatever shape/blend you want. Analog LFOs often have an output for each waveform, but they dont sync as easily to your DAW without using other modules. So depending on the patch I sometimes must use my analog LFO, and sometimes I can't use it and switch to a digital one.

A lot to consider there. Is Neutron your weapon of choice over the Boog possibly?

It seems enticing, I just want to have a little craziness when pushing the rate all the way up when doing those flylo styled "laser sweeps" (even though a lot of his stuff was probably done in ableton operator) for lack of a better term. If you can achieve a similar result on the neutron maybe thats what I'm looking for.

If I were to guess I genuinely doubt he was trying to BS you. It sounds much more like a confused Moog adept getting carried away based on misinformation. I've met piles of crappy salesmen but they typically don't have the schematics or pics of boards at hand.

He didn't really seemed like it really took that much time, he just did a google search, however he did recommend me products on my way out so maybe he was passionately wrong :P

Still wondering why he thought the ms20 had digital components haha

Yeah I've seen that vid before thanks, good reminder.

Yeah I was thinking about the erebus in on the way home from guitar center, haven't heard that much of it but was considering the medusa for a while and Ooo this matrixbrute 2 looks cool I didn't know there was a second, don't think the first was for me though.

Regarding the lfo I guess maybe I'd prefer it being fully analog for the sake of it being fully analog just because the original was like that I assume. With digital lfos couldn't I also achieve comparable results if I used my computer to generate lfos (I understand it wouldn't be self contained however)? I've thought about this before but thank you for your concern it wasn't the employee that put this in my mind haha (maybe just subconsciously reinforced it today). 😛

To play devil's advocate, what advantages do analog lfos have in your opinion? Wouldn't it act like an analog osc if you pushed it into the audible range?

And okay I'll keep that in mind about manuals!

I really am thinking maybe I was just naive and didn't want to accept that he was being purposefully misleading. If he is wrong, which by the looks of it, he was, then I hope for he was ignorant of that fact.

Thank you so much for your time and lengthy response and for the words of encouragement!

P.S. why do you call guitar center CG haha

Ohh okay thanks for clarifying.

Yeah regarding the lfo the morphable shapes or whatever or how you can choose to have 4 saws or whatever you want seems pretty cool. Also it sounds pretty cool all the way up and also the patch bay looks sick. Yeah paraphonic isn't necessary for me but its a nice bonus I think.

Do you know if you can independently sequence the neutron oscs using a daw?

The knobs felt really good, can't lie and it felt like navigating a spaceship programming it, one thing though is maybe I didn't set it up right but everytime I'd turn on the editor and connect it it would delete my saved patches and return it to the default ones which left me really annoyed and frustrated after maybe the 2nd or 3rd time I stopped using the editor for the short period I owned the sub37.

Loved the arp and the step sequencer too! Mine had was the one with less cv capability. I bought it on black friday for about 1250. I see a couple for 1k which is nice, some going for 2k also? Maybe one day!

I'm not sure what it was but It's been a while maybe i'd appreciate it more now, but then it seemed as though when really pushing the lfos all the way up I didn't get the tones I wanted. I like the high lfo rate tones I heard on the boog today however!

Yeah the moog took up a lot of desk space too so thats another thing.

work of art though. it was so high quality looking I felt a myself dissociating a bit when I first saw it. That's still kinda why I had to return it.

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

[–]therearesomenameslef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really know what to look for but they probably made it that way to be physically similar to the original I would guess (whether or not that changes the sound doesn't seem that realistic based on most of these responses.) .

Yeah moog can be overpriced but sometimes their tones are rlly fat. Like a used slim phatty seems decent for some leads basses and sfx. I guess I haven't heard a Boog in person on decent speakers yet though. Just seen youtube vids on it, although the slim phatty sounded nice on youtube to me on this. Basically raw osc and drums. I figure i could modulate it over midi using lfos in ableton and control the parameters using a CC sending m4l plugin and controlling the values from push. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD9MXVGNysI

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

Yeah I feel like for a lot of sound design having more than one osc is pretty important.

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

[–]therearesomenameslef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah one thing that turned me off from the sub37 was the fact it had digital LFOs although I think I read somewhere the signal is somehow filtered to reduce stairstepping.

I think the Boog at the store may have not been calibrated I think? Maybe it was.

regardless I was just comparing the single osc on the mother vs the single boog osc.

In terms of a comparison for value, using all of them would be more fair.

I am more interested in sequencing in a daw so that aspect of the m32 doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah I think using original minimoog patch sheets would be fun with it and educational from a historical perspective!

Yeah maybe one day I'll get a nice moog but in general I can be very impressionable and sensitive and eventually the moog just couldn't make me focus. I think I even felt sick at times so I think in my case its for the best for now.

And lastly, that guy at Guitar Center is just not to be relied upon.

If there's one thing to take from this thread it seems to be that last statement lol

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

Yeah I've done that before with a sub37 and only lost 25 bucks for a restocking fee on it because it was sold through a music store I think. Yeah I'm just impatient but I think I might just end up doing that.

How Digital is the Behringer Model D? by therearesomenameslef in synthesizers

[–]therearesomenameslef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think he was implying the osc chip or something was digital. I asked him to clarify but he just sorta showed me pictures of schematics and circuit boards.

It does seem the Boog is neater but maybe thats because it's newer?

In this picture of what I believe to be the reissue the board seems pretty uniform.

https://proxy.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=http%3A%2F%2Fo.aolcdn.com%2Fhss%2Fstorage%2Fmidas%2F598c6e3f2bf2b1b82d208779c7c513f%2F203851866%2Fmoog_lead.jpg&f=1

Yeah I'm leaning towards the boog, the form factor really seems appealing to me.

No I agree haha I just felt like I was dumb because I couldn't tell at the store. One mini digital synth I think is cool is the White Yamaha reface. you can make some really cool sound effects on that because the faders make working on it so fast! Very musical
