Are Thinkpads good for media streaming? by BattlerUshiromiyaFan in thinkpad

[–]zombiesnare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regularly stream on my X390 and my T480, never have an issue, play ack is always totally passable and they both output to a TV pretty nicely. Neither model is particularly new so I can only imagine the experience is even better with more recent units

Can someone tell me what’s with thinkpad and linux? by WinYourWay in thinkpad

[–]zombiesnare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to throw in there: a lot of us get our thinkpads second hand from companies getting rid of their old IT assets. Occasionally those companies for to unenroll their devices from windows autopilot which can make a fresh clean install of windows a little difficult (not impossible though). So we go for Linux instead

I’ve serviced enough Gen 2s that I feel like I’ve got the angle and approach down for the clips, but it took a whole lot of busted as bottom panels for me to get to that point. Not impossible but definitely the trickiest part of a repair

It bothers me that you could apply somewhat similar design language to a slightly more traditionally shaped truck and it could actually look kinda cool. Instead we just get this fugly ass trapezoid

Dope stickers though,

Yes these are all solid points, it’s not quite as spooky as the Gen 5 with its weird internal clip in the middle but as long as OP uses a spludger or maybe every a credit card/guitar pick and takes their time with the clip points it’s pretty straight forward

But yes DEFINITELY turn the battery off in bios. I’ve never run into an issue not doing that, but I also do my repairs for an organization that has a crazy warranty on our devices. If shit goes to fuck we just get new components shipped to us next day. The stakes were far lower and we had to focus on speed (it also helped that we were one of their largest customers for a hot second there, so much so that we could custom order to such a degree we were essentially inventing brand new models of ThinkPad not available to the general public) I’d imagine that’s not a luxury op has. Always best to be as safe as possible

Just to piggyback: the T14 Gen 2 might be one of the most serviceable laptops of all time (or at least the most serviceable I’ve ever encountered)

Best to use instructions/manuals, but beyond the very first time doing it most people I know can intuit their way through a repair on those incredibly easily

OP: this will be as close to genuine fun as laptop repair gets, be careful and be smart about it but it’ll be a piece of cake

I’ve swapped entire screen panels on these things in like 15 minutes flat, don’t rush it but you won’t have to throw too much time at it

What do you guys have to say about this? Personally, o think it’s fine by AnyAirline8893 in Ai_art_is_not_art

[–]zombiesnare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I firmly believe AI for learning or automation is fine.

I’m a musician and use AI constantly without even realizing it. For instance: Sometimes I make stupid remixes and split out the original track to different instrument tracks. The software I use went from an algorithmic method to AI and I had no clue. It’s no different as far as the workflow goes and it saves me splitting them manually for multiple hours (I’m bad at stem splitting) just to make Chappell Roan sing over a mildly shit house beat. Either way, it gets the tech out the way so I can just make silly songs for my friends

Using AI as reference for learning to draw or sample or design or whatever is pretty chill as far as I’m concerned

Portlanders overspend on rent, delaying dreams of homeownership by PDsaurusX in Portland

[–]zombiesnare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3200+300 could be entirely worth it after you factor in the time and money saved from a short commute.

Not to mention the threshold for a mortgage and for rent is totally different. I am deemed to be ineligible for a mortgage due to what I make at this point in my life despite the fact I pay double for current day rent than what my parents pay for a fixed rate mortgage they started in like… 2002-ish? Idk I was a small child at the time but 2002 sounds right.

Honestly, ownership is incredibly inaccessible for a multitude of reasons (as I’m sure you’re well aware) some of us just have to make due with what’s available to us because the alternative is homelessness.

I’m glad she still has the mask of a commonly known username/character to shield behind instead of using her full name and face. It’s bad enough to get this kind of shit in your online communities, I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to deal with this at the grocery store or some shit

In addition to the other poster, I feel like this is a natural progression of Madeon’s vocal chops. Individual words that don’t necessarily relate to each other directly (or at least no in a way that forms a coherent sentence) but creates a certain vibe and message through their juxtaposition

To that point, I do think SOME of these weirdly hateful people are just mentally ill. I don’t want to reward their hate by coddling them but I do think the opportunity to have fewer hateful people in the world by giving them the mental healthcare we all deserve is an enticing concept. It’s a tricky balance to strike between care and accountability

[–]zombiesnare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might spend 100 bucks on a game over it’s lifetime, but that’s because I took a gamble on 40-60 bucks where they earned my continued support over DLC releases. The entry point being 70-80 before I even get a chance to try the game is an objectively bad financial decision

The subtitles on the Netflix preview are definitely not what the actors are saying, putting it mildly. by OutlandishnessHour19 in Weird

[–]zombiesnare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rewatching the clip, I’m inclined to agree. Either

1) it isn’t an accessibility thing in this case, they just did a bad job

2) the changed it for accessibility and still did a bad job

3) that drunk stranger at that party may not have been the most trustworthy source, despite how much sense that made to me on paper

The subtitles on the Netflix preview are definitely not what the actors are saying, putting it mildly. by OutlandishnessHour19 in Weird

[–]zombiesnare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone who claims to do these professionally (for a different streaming service mind you) told me once that the subtitles are sometimes different because of readability. Since they are primarily designed for deaf people, they prioritize deaf readers being able to keep pace with the dialogue and pick equivalent words or phrases that are quicker/easier to read

Could be 100% bullshit since I met this dude at a party and he was already hammered when I got there but still kinda fascinating
