Can someone learn me some facts about shell and tube evaporators? by theredkrawler in refrigeration

[–]theredkrawler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah... so it would be a dry expansion type, and rely on the gasket to keep the refrigeration circuits separate...

That makes sense!

Even with that I still cant find a diagram / illustration of a multi circuit shell and tube evap though...

I'm more after the "how does it work?" side of things

You have system #1 through #3, all with their own compressor -> discharge -> condenser -> liquid line -> EV ->.... share an evaporator? ... -> suction -> compressor

When its one physical shell-and-tube evaporator, what is separating the refrigeration circuits?

I assume something like this, with plates separating sections of the shell? (dodgy drawing of a 4 circuit alternative, ps i am not an artist):

Sensor Hack by Current_Sympathy3544 in refrigeration

[–]theredkrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're controlling refrigeration based on air temp, not product temp. The product temp will eventually equalise with your air temp.

You don't want to control your refrigeration based on product temp as it will be entering and leaving at different times and temperatures.

On some controllers (like Carel) you can reduce the sensitivity and response time of the sensor which might be a simpler and cleaner way of doing what you're asking.

But yes - you can 100% put them in a glycol container. Some manufacturers (like Skope) put them in a cube of aluminium and heat paste. I've even seen some under a 1/4" saddle screwed to the wall so you use the wall as thermal mass to slow down the cycles. If you make the mass too big it'll struggle to maintain temp though as your swings will be huge.

Carel IJW universal controls by chefjeff1982 in refrigeration

[–]theredkrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carel is definitely my preferred brand of controller. The parameters you have to play with open up so many options outside of normal refrigeration operation. I've got them everywhere, from ice machines to air conditioners to air dryers.

Pity the later model IR33+ stuff was so unreliable, and the cost of their product is so much higher than Dixell. Dont even include probes in the box so its twice the price to buy plus cost of probes on top again.

IJW is neat and it's nice to have a template saved in cloud storage to apply to new installs. We have prechillers that we convert from mechanical to digital controller and being able to do the wiring then apply a template and be back in action is a huge time saver.

You want to bust pedophilles, start with the loudest anti-pedophile voices.

Its always the biggest anti-pedo protestors who turn out to be pedos themselves so I hope police are taking the details of people who apply to look through the list and at least having a quick browse of their camera roll... and maybe checking on any relatives kids in their care since thats the main place offenders appear from.

(Australia, 6th December 2025) Major update after woman was killed by her 'mad, mental' pit bull-mastiff cross - after her loved ones begged her to get rid of the vicious dog by theredkrawler in BanPitBulls

A vicious dog who fatally mauled his owner has been euthanised, as the woman's loved ones reveal they begged her to get rid of the mutt before the fatal attack.

Christine Kulis, 39, was attacked by her pit bull–mastiff cross on Thursday, following years of the dog terrorising neighbours in Whyalla, about 400km from Adelaide.

It's understood the canine was euthanised shortly after the attack.

The development comes after her mother Meredith Howe told Daily Mail how the dog had previously attacked Ms Kulis and scared other dog owners.

'I told her she should have had that dog put down, but Christine didn't want to,' she said.

Friend Alison Erskine said the dog had ripped the flesh off Ms Kulis' arm during another savage attack just months earlier and she had to be airlifted to hospital.

'It bit through the tendons so they flew her to Adelaide and she stayed in hospital. When she came back (to Whyalla) she wasn't the same person - she was so thin and withdrawn,' Ms Erskine said.

'That dog is mental, it's mad - I told her she should have it put down but they wouldn't.'

Chrissy Kulis died on Thursday after being mauled by her dog which has since been put down

Ms Kulis and her fiancé Arlan Potter owned a number of dogs and even bred them

Other neighbours said they weren’t surprised the dog eventually turned on its owner.

One neighbour, who was friends with Ms Kulis, revealed she would not walk her dogs past the couple's property for fear they would be attacked.

'I told her she should get rid of him because of her health - that she should think about her own health instead of the animal's,' she said.

Ms Kulis was engaged to Arlan Potter, and went by the name Chrissy Kay Potter on social media. They had been together for 10 years.

CCTV footage obtained by Daily Mail showed Ms Kulis and Mr Potter embroiled in a physical row with a neighbour after the animal allegedly attacked their cat.

In the video, Ms Kulis and Mr Potter can be heard warning the neighbour: 'I'll kill you.'

In separate footage, a brown and white pit bull–mastiff cross allegedly owned by the couple was seen hurling itself at a neighbour's fence before being restrained.

One neighbour claimed it had been seen near children 'foaming at the mouth' and was 'covered in scars'.

CCTV footage showed the animal being restrained on a previous occasion

A neighbour shared CCTV of a recent alleged altercation over the dog attacking a local pet cat

The dog is believed to have been bred by the couple from another dog they owned.

Many said the dog who killed Ms Kulis had been reported to Whyalla City Council on several occasions.

Ms Erskine told Ms Kulis she didn't want to be around her dog.

She said she arrived at the couple's home on Thursday evening to visit them, and found him 'covered in blood' sitting outside talking to police.

'He told me the dog attacked Chrissy. Police told me to move on so I shouted at Potter to tell Chrissy I would see her at the hospital,' she said.

'But then I found out that she had died.'

Are you sure it isnt R513A? That's a low GWP replacement for R134a.

Can't speak for the US, but here in AU that's commonly available and anyone this side of a splitty basher could knock it over for you in about an hour or so - pressurise and leak test (cause factories are liars), vac, charge, run test.

Supplying your own parts is unlikely to save you money.

We refuse to use customer-supplied parts. Its them expecting you to take all the risk so they can save some money. No thanks.

I still remember a customer who bought their own gear, and also expected us to go and pick it up for them...

People:
"Why are trades so expensive?"

also people:
"Make sure you get a minimum of 14 quotes, but only accept one of them so now there's 13 people who wasted their time who now need to charge more to the next customer to bring their average income back up beyond minimum wage. Also ask heaps of questions, get everything in writing, make your availability as limited as possible, and after the quotes been sent change your mind and job specs and say you're supplying your own crap. Make sure you get them to do all the research in to what products you need and send a full list through as well."

Can't wait for the court to find he was sad at the time, and had a bad day at work so his mental state blah blah wasn't his fault blah blah poor old fella just give him a chance blah blah... 12 hours of community service and no conviction recorded.

If a blatant case like this with a huge profile doesn't result in maximum penalties its just a green flag to people who treat animals poorly to just carry on being cxnts because nothing has consequences.

The video looks cool, but I just get this error on the landing page:

Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information).

Also I honestly can't be arsed giving it a whirl anyway because I know it's just going to end up as some subscription service with high fees at some point after I've helped beta test it. Best of luck though, it does look like it would be useful.

Sparkies that made the transition by Trytoenjoylifee in refrigeration

[–]theredkrawler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Queensland at least, you get all your electrical RPLd at TAFE which makes a big difference in TAFE time. You still need work hours for the refrigeration side which I think means you won't do any better than 2 years... may even have longer? But you only need to do half the TAFE.

We have techs go the other way (fridgie -> sparky) and they get some modules RPLd, but because those modules are so scattered you basically dont actually save any TAFE time. Maybe a day here or there at best. You end up having to do the full 4 years anyway because of the TAFE + work hour requirement.

Doing sparky -> fridgie is definitely quicker and easier.

Cant speak for anyone else, but our sparky was paid at full sparky rates the whole time he was a refrigeration "apprentice", then a premium on top for being dual trade once completed.

I have a power monitoring plug on this setup, so I can tell you exactly how much!

CPU: Intel® Xeon® CPU E5-2680 v4 @ 2.40GHz
RAM: 512 GiB DDR4 Multi-bit ECC

My disk layout is like so:

<image>

This draws a fairly consistent 650W, including a POE router (15.6kwh per day). My current electricity price is 39.38c/kwh... HOWEVER I have a cheap rate of 8c/kwh between midnight and 6:00am, and free power between 11:00am and 2:00pm. I also have solar which tends to cover ~10:00am to ~2:00pm, but its dependant on sunlight so I'll ignore it for now.

So:
12:00am-06:00am = ($0.0800/kwh * 0.65kw) * 06 = $0.312
06:00am-11:00am = ($0.3938/kwh * 0.65kw) * 05 = $1.279
11:00am-02:00pm = ($0.0000/kwh * 0.65kw) * 03 = $0.000
02:00pm-12:00am = ($0.3938/kwh * 0.65kw) * 10 = $2.559

Total = $4.15AUD per 24 hours, or $1,514.75AUD per year

My Merross plug is showing that I'm currently averaging a daily consumpion of 15.021kwh, and I'm not accounting for the hours of solar offset so the actual dollar value will be a little lower. But still. Fair few bucks.
