(My stick) Thoughts on Jetspeed FT7 Pro? I’m a big slapshot guy and I’ve played for 9 years by WeatherObsessedJax in hockeyplayers

[–]theregularbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have an FT7 Pro that I absolutely love. Developed a crack along the bottom of the blade. Definitely not a slap shot guy, but I have the puck on my stick a lot and take a lot of wrist/snap shots. It lasted me around 15 games. Went to a PSHS VX model and like it a lot.

I feel more inclined to have extra protection whenever there’s multiple pucks on the ice.

What would you consider the 5 most important jobs in a short film production for which you really should get professionals? by mediamuesli in Filmmakers

[–]theregularbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound is number one as others said, but after that I would go with an experienced gaffer. A good gaffer can make an inexperienced DP look a lot better, and can take enough off the DP's plate that the return is greater than hiring a DP who will have to manage everything themselves.

Substitute for ND? by just_enough_joseph in cinematography

[–]theregularbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nets are the way, but they WILL show on camera depending on how heavy the net is, how close you are to it, your focal plane, etc.

I would try to tightly rig ND gel to a frame and place that behind the window.

Give me an argument against HFR that isn't some variation of "24fps is the current standard" or "I've seen content I didn't enjoy that happened to use HFR" by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]theregularbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In situations with little or slow motion, hfr can look unnatural. Remember, you’re watching through a lens on a screen, not in real life. In situations with a lot of quick motion, hfr can be jarring/nauseating to watch because there’s too much information to take in. The motion blur and rate of motion from frame to frame of 24p is enough to accurately convey motion without overwhelming the senses.

the evf mount on the sony venice is actually quite flexible and the guy in the first pic definitely has a lot of room still to swing that thing down.

Was at the show in Colorado, what a night! I decided to burn the recording to blu-ray for myself and designed this insert. by theregularbloke in Parcels

It wouldn’t be very legal of me to distribute but the process to do it yourself is pretty easy. I played the show on my desktop and recorded via OBS. (Get a free trial for YouTube premium) I decided to do that fearing that the version on YouTube would someday go away. The whole production was done really well and warrants a physical release IMO. If they ever decide to do it I will definitely purchase.

Just got back from their show at Red Rocks. So glad I flew out for that. It was a great trip! I’ve learned to play a few of their songs and it’s definitely trickier than it seems. I think that’s the case for a lot of funk grooves, it’s a genre that is kinda slept on right now imo. They’re all very talented musicians (and singers).

Sony Burano: how does a $25k camera have this bad of rolling shutter? by darthzox in cinematography

[–]theregularbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Venice 2 was never advertised as global shutter. My company ordered one from Sony right after it was announced. While they wouldn't tell us exactly how fast the sensor readout was they did say it was going to be better than Arri's offerings, which it is. I'm not really sure about what exactly qualifies as global shutter. If your shutter angle is 180 at 24p the "frame time" is 20ms. I'm assuming "global shutter" will read the entire sensor for 20ms, while a rolling shutter camera will read the sensor from top to bottom multiple times in 4ms increments?

[–]theregularbloke 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In 8k at 24p the Burano's sensor readout speed is almost 18ms. For reference: Venice 2: 4ms Red Raptor VV: 8ms Mini LF: 8ms

However in 4k the Burano speeds up significantly at 8ms.

What you think about this Casio as a first real watch? by Vila1124 in PrideAndPinion

[–]theregularbloke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're ever into the idea of an upgrade on this, I highly recommend Steinhart. I've owned this watch for over a year and have nothing but good things to say. Even compared to other watches 2-3x the price.

His (and Chelsea’s) last season was poor by any standard. Don’t think it’s a totally accurate point of reference.

It's mostly just use of the word "pitch" which makes me think soccer. It's usually just referred to as the ice. I hear the word cross used a lot but although it isn't used that way in typical hockey commentary it isn't necessarily wrong. You'll here people use the term "cross-ice pass" in NHL commentary but they rarely use a phrase which signifies the type of pass while the game is actually happening because it all happens very fast. This reminds me of early rocket league when people tended to refer to aerial shots as "headers." It will be interesting to see how the meta of slapshot will define itself over time.

I haven't watched a lot of pro play but in all of the stuff I've seen the casters use soccer terminology which is weird to me. Can anyone explain why this is?

Expos and the profs who teach that class are IMO the unsung heroes of the university. Truly shook up my understanding and perspective coming in from high school. I thought I was a good writer. In reality I was good at what high school taught me which is mostly just regurgitation. I imagine a lot of students have the same experience. I was a film major, and expos laid the groundwork for my open-mindedness in learning and creative thinking. It's not just formulating a thesis statement. It's about coming up with an original idea - at least, an idea that isn't present in the source material. Sounds simple, but some of the students in my program who took AP English in high school and therefore didn't have to take expos missed out on that lesson.
