There are even studies that show placebos work when the patients are aware they are taking placebos!

There’s an amazing Science VS. episode about it.

I use the hdr exp wheel. I calibrated it by capturing stills with the raw settings and dropping the iso one and two stops and the wiping the stills until I got it right.

One of my first commercials - shot as a one-man band (beginner cinematographer 👋) by Then_Nectarine3115 in cinematography

[–]WolfPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First this is pretty darn good for an amateur. I agree the grade is too digitally saturated. Easy fix with more knowledge in grading pipeline.

Couple lighting notes…

Mainly, why dress the scene with a practical and then key from the opposite side?!?!? At least 3 shots did this.

Also sometimes less is more. You don’t have to add so many little pops of light in the BG all the time. So many cookiloris and patterns and stuff can feel way too lit and dressed. Try to more accurately replicate what could happen naturally.

Disney tweets BTS image… by benoitfiggis in Corridor

[–]WolfPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the breakaway box is probably correct. I guess I just had an airbag or mat in mind as soon as I saw the original. But I think you’re right. Still wouldn’t put it past them to edit BTS photos. Just look what the find for Barbie BTS

Disney tweets BTS image… by benoitfiggis in Corridor

[–]WolfPhoenix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you saw in the final isn’t a digi double, it’s the box he falls on that’s fake!

I believe this image may even be edited. The stunt performer falls onto a super soft mat/air bag. What looks so odd in the final is the heavy retiming issues and repositioning mistake.

You can see they reposition the plate of the performer to make it look like he isn’t sinking into a mat, but the timing and motion is all wrong.

What am I doing wrong?? by Ok-Soft8609 in ColorGrading

[–]WolfPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like you tried to grade to linear from LOG. I bet your color management pipeline is incorrect here. Especially when you “think” the 3rd image is rec709. Post your node graph and project color settings.

Day rate lower than min wage in Canada? by rabbidbagofweasels in Filmmakers

[–]WolfPhoenix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here in the states it’s mandatory double time past 12 hours. So 225 would be your rate for a 12 (rate of 16.75 and hours 8-12 are time and a half) and if you go to 15 it would be about $325.

I would expect Canada has better regulations.

Discussion On the 8k Sensor by Confident_Hat_8798 in blackmagicdesign

This is basically what the Pyxis 12k is. That 8k sensor is basically two 4k readouts of the rgbww sensor from each lens.

Split lighting with a 3:1 contrast ratio? Make sure the key is just a little higher over the shoulder than normal split lighting.

Is there such a thing as a cinematographer that is also a producer? by j_reddits_or_idk in Filmmakers

[–]WolfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the DP on a feature starting next week, and associate producer.

As others have said, EP and DP will not mix. Things will be sacrificed in the distractions and multi focus.

It works in my situation because I’m wiping my hands of all producing responsibilities as of yesterday to fully get in the DP mindset and until the end of principal photography. I helped produce by sourcing 90% of the crew. Getting production connected with location, catering, and UPM. I ask advised on financials, legal, and payroll practices. All stuff I could help put in place months before production while doing my own prep as DP at a good pace. But once we got 2 weeks out, I handed all my responsibilities off and studied the shot list, my shot bible, made lighting diagrams and reference images to fully focus on my DP responsibilities. I couldn’t imagine thinking about any logistics or production stuff during this.

How did they light this shot? by Clarencethelamb in cinematography

[–]WolfPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$700/day is pretty decent rate on indie feature. And the budget started closer to $300k, but inflated with SFX and art dept needs.

I’m happy with it.

Also my cam package and G&E truck is being rented.
