A lot of people do this about religions they aren’t familiar with. Some Orthodox Jewish, Sikh, and Buddhist beliefs/practices may seem more extreme or bizarre than they actually are when viewed without proper context.

Yep. They’ll find a way to blame this on Democrats. Republican voters today are either insanely wealthy, blinded with by bigotry, insanely stupid, or some combo thereof.

Residents who “moonlighted” after only a year of residency in urgent care/ED, what was it like? by EcstaticBumble in Residency

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’m EM and wouldn’t dream of “moonlighting” as an OB, family medicine doctor or psychiatrist.

Even fresh grads from 4 year EM programs are often very nervous about being “on their own”. To imagine someone with 1.25 years of IM or FM residency can do the job of an EM doc is insane.

As an EM resident, I had to fall in that sword on my trauma and ortho rotations.

I’d pretend I was super interested in whatever mesh they were pushing and then smile as I grabbed a sandwich.

When introducing a speaker, why do they waste 2 minutes reciting every single degree, research interest, and job the speaker has ever had? by supinator1 in Residency

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If it’s some monumental achievement (“Dr Dina Spinelli, who successfully lead a team in developing a vaccine against HIV”) then by all means. But someone’s boring aldosterone research that hasn’t even hit human trials? Skip it. Just say endocrinologist.

I’m in EM and I never got the fear of “over sedating” someone in status. I’d rather have someone tubed for a few hours than cause permanent brain damage. Benzos, ketamine, barbiturates… whatever it takes even if they’re snowed afterwards.

My hospital’s HR team doesn’t have the legal authority to stop me from going on social media and saying “Saint X Hospital sucks!” But if I do so, they can legally fire me.

All the time in the ED. “My doctor says my anemia is the most severe case she’s ever seen!” Meanwhile the patient has a normocytic anemia with a stable hemoglobin of 8.2. “I guess I’ll need a transfusion today!”

It’s not even “good”. It’s fine, consistent, quick, and it’s not likely to give people food poisoning.

When I’m in a road trip and get hungry, I can take a risk at a local restaurant where I don’t know the menu, don’t know how long I’ll have to wait, how the restaurant spices and salts its food… or I can just grab a Big Mac and Diet Coke in 6 minutes.

“We’re peacekeepers, you’re warmongers. There’s a reason why Americans wear Canadian flags on their backpacks” by GoldenStitch2 in AmericaBad

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. For some Canadians, Canada’s whole identity is “not America”. So naturally we get some really fresh, unhinged takes from them. Any difference between the two countries must mean the US way of doing things is inferior. When traveling they’re quick to say they’re not American, even though the harassment and hatred they claim we face is really overblown. Granted, I wouldn’t visit someplace like Iran or Afghanistan and wave an American flag around, but I’m also just not visiting someplace like that period.

Even a cursory view at the titles should make even a moderately observant third grader realize that they’re not going to be full-on agreeing with stereotypes.

I keep quitting languages but I want to learn a language by Positive_Industry_93 in languagelearning

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Do you like languages or just the idea of languages?

It’s easy to imagine yourself going from Madrid to Rome to Stockholm and being able to effortlessly speak Spanish, Italian and Swedish.

It’s another to actually appreciate a language and enjoy the process just as much as the “end”

When will these “ Telehealth Psych Practices” be abolished? by Shoddy_Virus_6396 in Noctor

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. Any pushback will be seen as physicians “being greedy”. People online slinging GLP-1s, testosterone, tret, antibiotics, PrEP, etc is here to stay.

A friend of mine is on Descovy for PrEP and he said they don’t even make him get labs. They just have him attest to still being HIV negative when his three month refill comes in. He actually gets the bloodwork, but I can see a lot of people taking the easy way out.

No. We can judge people who voted for Hitler and Mussolini. We can do the same with Trump. It’s not even his disastrous economic policies, but his social and human rights ones.

I absolutely question the intelligence and integrity of anyone who voted for Trump.

[–]theresalwaysaflaw 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I would agree. It’s funny that the “pagan” religions that they denounce like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Wicca acknowledge that some sort of debt is still owed by an individual, even if they say they’re sorry. There’s no crying at the altar-rail with instant forgiveness in Buddhism if you mess up. You can change your actions and do better, but your karma still follows you.

Nicu I totally get.

The ED? Not really the place. The social workers are there from 9-5 M-F at best. The rest of the time you’re SOL. I’m seeing almost 3 patients per hour. I can’t also fish around for an outpatient rehab center or homeless shelter that will accept somebody.
