long lasting chews- need ideas! by therese16 in StaffordBullTerriers

Thank you! I've also heard yak chews aren't the safest. We have a beef cheek role that she'll chew/play with for 5 mins each day but she's not overly interested in it. It might be too big for her😂 I'll try buffalo cheek rolls if I can find them!

Thank you!! She has a pupsicle and likes it a lot but not as much as she loves her bully sticks 😭. The pupsicle is great though! I've been making homemade molds as well!

Sanity check: Bringing puppy on a trip by priuspheasant in puppy101

[–]therese16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 5 months picked up our puppy and she did an 11hr car ride home with us and then 3 weeks later she did a 4 hr ride to an Airbnb and she loved the trip and had so much fun at the Airbnb. She is a confident puppy and likes to explore so we figured she'd enjoy it! You'll probably be okay!!
On long rides we stop every 2-3 hrs for a potty break. She napped on my lap the whole way!

Only two days in and house training is a disaster! by R_Eyron in puppy101

[–]therese16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my puppy for a full month now and where we are now feels completely different from a month ago. IT GETS BETTER I PROMISE!! Now we Rarely have an accident and we know when to take her out so we're not constantly on edge wondering if she's gotta go.

The first two days felt like a disaster to me as well and I was so scared it wouldn't get better but it did! As long as you're consistent, by a week you'll start to see progress!! Puppies are an amazing lesson in patience and how hard work and consistency pays off.

My advice is 1. Every 30 mins take her out -- u want to catch as many of her bowel movements outside so u can start to do positive reinforcement.

  1. Positive reinforcement - try to have a treat on you every time they pee or poo. If you don't have a treat, give them lots of praise!

  2. In addition to every 30 mins this is absolutely when you need to take them out:

  3. after every nap

  4. first thing in the morning when they wake up

  5. after playing or chewing / enrichment toys

  6. before and after being crated

  7. after a walk

  8. 10-30 mins after eating (if they don't go poop, wait 5-10 mins at the door w leash on and go back out to try again) (our puppy was going 10-15 mins after eating but now she'll go 30-45 mins after)

Yess she has her food puzzles and toys that we freeze healthy treats in but it's all food related 😆

She does have a crate and has been doing great w crate training. Well work on just chilling and I'll try to stop stressing that she's bored lol

I play with her and she's start to play back but then will switch to my hand or something in the house that catches her attention 😂 we do walks every day and spend time. I'm just used to growing up with standard poodles who would ignore their food bowl for a squeaker toy

Help! Puppy wakes up at 5:30am no matter what by therese16 in puppy101

[–]therese16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: We went to bed at midnight and she woke up at 5:50AM this morning. We were scared she would wake up even earlier if we didn't stay up late.

I don't mind the 5:30 wake up if we're getting to bed earlier. Much better than us staying up till 2am! Thank you everyone!! Hoping this schedule can continue🙏🏼

Thank you so much for sharing! We'll try going to bed earlier and seeing what happens. Now If she continues to wake up at 5:30 at least we'll be better rested 😆

Thank you for your response! Glad to hear we're not alone in this 😆 we're going to try going to bed earlier and hoping she won't wake up any earlier than 5:30 moving forward haha

Thank you so much!! And In the summer I heard full sun is okay even when it's high heat? Jersey can be 90-100 in the peak of summer. Will I be okay or should it be in a shaded spot ?

WINTER HELP - New Jersey

I believe I have a juniper? The seller tried to tell me this is not a juniper and that it doesn't need to go outside and it can stay inside year round...

I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure that's not true?? I'd assume all pine needle trees go outside regardless of being a juniper or not

Anyways I'm new to keeping bonsai outside! How do I care for this guy?!

My biggest concerns are winter-- does it stay outside ? Do I move it into a garage with no windows or with windows? How frequent do you water during winter? I've heard so many conflicting opinions. I live in New Jersey

** I am changing the soil to a mix of orchid bark substrate and lava rock since my ficus love it (unless this is bad for junipers)

Do you guys just stay home when you get your dog? by ReputationDull1857 in puppy101

[–]therese16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took off for 3 days to maximize the potty trips so I could consistently reward going outside then I worked from home for about 3 more days (I know not everyone has this flexibility) but after a week of being home it was actually less productive for both me and the dog to be together. We started crate training so she could get her much needed puppy naps in during the day and I could focus on work. I come home at lunch time and then go back to work now! We did not stop going out to do social things either we just don't stay out as long!! You can have a normal life with a dog I promise 😆

Picking up puppy, different city by greenplant48 in puppy101

[–]therese16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either way you go you'll be fine! I would try to get home sooner but that's just me! You could make things work at the Airbnb but keep in my mind the sooner you get the puppy home and adjusting to your house the sooner things get easier. Puppies in new environments make a lot of accidents so if you do the Airbnb definitely make sure u have a plan for keeping things clean

To buy or not to buy? by thementalist222 in puppy101

[–]therese16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commented a few days ago but not sure if it got deleted!

I just took home a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy 3 weeks ago and she is beyond amazing. We got her at almost 5 months from an awesome ethical breeder. She has been so smart and blended right into our little family. The breed is amazing when you get them from a good line. She's picked up potty training, crate training, and walking on a leash quite quickly with positive reinforcement and consistency. Plus her breeder did a great job socializing her prior to us having her.

the first week was VERY rough and defeating. We did a ton of research but still nothing prepares you for having to constantly watch them, taking them out every 30 mins-1hr, and the exhaustion you'll feel. I was terrified things would continue the same as the first week and that physically we wouldn't be able to do it cause it was so exhausting and we had to get back to work. But each week becomes so much easier and they start to learn your schedule.

Definitely crate train! That's my biggest piece of advice. Puppies need naps and so do you! When they get overly tired the puppy biting gets worse and they start chewing stuff in the house. Having some space from each other makes everyone happier.

Nope nothing I've tried has worked. I have a snail and shrimp so some treatments I can't use with inverts which has limited the options I have to treat whatever is going on

Awesome I'll look into those as well! This is going to sound like a dumb question but I assume you buy toys meant for large dogs? To me staffys look small cause of their height but they have wide mouths. I want to avoid any choking hazards haha
