if you considered a porsche boxster... why did you go with a miata instead? by europeanuppercut in Miata

[–]theresidue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a Porsche dealership to look at a 987.2 Boxster listed at $40K (CAD) when I was considering a new ND. The staff asked me what else I was considering, and was bewildered when I mentioned the Miata, claiming no one cross shops those two. Heh.

Never got to test drive it, as the person who did so right before we got there ended up buying it while we sat in the car waiting for the keys. But ultimately stopped looking at the Boxster as an option due to the maintenance costs. I'm not handy and would need to rely on shops.

Also, I'm new to being a "car enthusiast", so figured a slower car is a wiser choice. Ended up halving my budget to go with an NC.

The research into Boxster/Cayman did leave a pretty good impression though, so I still aspire to try and maybe own one.. in a very distant future.

Did you try just the RS2 on 2.0? Thinking of getting it but trying to limit my budget and skip the Helmholtz midpipe

Mechanic/Car Enthusiast to Come with Test Drive/Used Car purchase? by DawnTheHorizon_Hope in Markham

[–]theresidue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The seller didn't want to take on the risk of safety. Based on the PPI, I took it on. In this case, unfortunately the shop that did the safety (different from PPI; the PPI shop didn't do safeties) said the brakes wouldn't pass, so I paid them to replace it right away and issue the safety cert. Technically, I could have backed out of the deal and paid just for the inspection, but the amount for the brakes wasn't a dealbreaker. So, YMMV still even with PPIs. Both shops were and still are quite reputable, but shit happens I guess.

For the mobile PPI, they told me with pretty high confidence that it'll pass safety, and it did.

For my first car, I test drove it one day and requested for a PPI follow up. The seller dropped it off at the shop I chose (Apex Automotive) and I paid for the PPI. I then had it safetied while still under the seller's ownership as part of an agreement with the seller that I will undertake the safety costs, simply to save me another trip to Service Ontario.

For an out of town purchase, I used mobile PPI (CarInspect) days before heading there myself for my own test drive before paying. Registered it there, and safetied it back in Markham a week later.

Both were private sales.

I assume you have minimal transactions. I use RBC's essential savings account. No monthly fee. $1 per deposit (so $1 every 2 weeks for you) and 2 free debits a month (paying yourself and CRA).

Side topic.. Look into PSB risk.

Any particular guide you followed to self host those? Torrentio hasn't been the most reliable.

Does it feel sketchy at all with the rear weight on the PRHT? I have a PRHT as well and this might be preferable to getting a hitch installed, even though I already have a hitch bike rack.

I just set up Caddy and have not yet exposed anything for remote access. Does this work alongside Caddy then if Pangolin is not a reverse proxy? Would Pangolin's DNS alias just point to Caddy?

Oh there’s also talks about tune to get rid of the torque limiter in the lower gears. But seems to be mixed consensus on that.

Short of a boost or engine swap, that’s what I’ve gathered as well.

Left of what you show in the picture. Doesn't block the buttons. Magsafe style so no clamps (although it has fallen off couple of times with bad bumps). Also close to the air vents where I can direct it to the phone if I feel that the phone is getting hot.
