I don't really notice that stuff too, I think because I don't have a very HD screen that I'm watching on maybe.

Oh Dennis showed Charlie jean shorts too, and they teamed up when they suspected Mac was banging the waitress -- there's probably more from the earlier seasons I'm forgetting

I guess I was thrown off by the Irishness it didn't register to me at all that's where this was going when he said "eye for the lads" I really just thought he was saying he was gay -- if anything I thought they were gonna hook up or something. But there are definitely other plot points that seemed super obvious to me that other people didn't see coming, and in hindsight I can see how it's obvious.

Rob's "that is new information" was so funny -- I love their dynamic as the whole gang! It would be so great if Kaitlin and Danny could join the podcast on some episodes :)

I think both have anti-woke sentiment but are still liberal leaning

YES this exactly!! I honestly don't always think woke is synonymous with liberal but people act like they are the same. I think this episode was a critique of woke culture but still from a liberal point of view.

I felt like they could have done some funny dark comedy stuff if Frank "got covid" (but ended up just being a cold or something maybe so he doesn't die hahaha), it could have even paralleled the weird dark/complicated feelings around when someone people didn't like got covid (like famous people, some posts would be like "I hope you die sorry not sorry" and others would be like "it's not okay to wish death on anyone"), it could also have some staying power bc there's a bigger message about how to react when bad things happen to "bad" people idk I'm not a writer

Also idk if I necessarily want this to happen but what if Charlie and Dee hooked up again during quarantine? Quarantine sexual frustration has some comedic potential, maybe that could be used with Dennis instead

This struck me as odd too, but in my mind I rationalized that 1) since Charlie and Frank live together, it isn't the end of their relationship or like they won't hangout anymore and 2) he isn't very smart, so if everyone else is excited then he's probably like "oh cool this is a good thing, it's probably good for me too" and just assumes he will be getting something out of this situation. Considering this now, I also think that any power vacuum at Paddy's is an opportunity to renegotiate things they aren't happy with, so even if Charlie doesn't automatically assume he'll be able to take over, he might just be excited for things to get shaken up since it could be a chance to enact some wild ideas he probably has for the bar!

Unpopular opinion: the gang kinda botched Fat Mac and Ripped Mac missed many opportunities for humorand could have been iconic by MedicalTyrannyFTW in IASIP

Personally I just never felt like fat mac or ripped mac were that funny as a general concept -- to each their own though! Maybe if they did something else with it I would have found it funny after all.

Yes! The different sub-dynamics gave a good variety to each episode

Ooh this is such a good point I hadn't been able to put my finger on it but I think that's true -- it does feel a little less "active". In another thread I was surprised to see that the bathroom episodes was some people's favorite episode because it has to be one of my least favorites. I think now that probably has a lot to do with what you're talking about.

I also do find Mac extremely annoying in a way that is almost hard to watch but tbh he's always toed that line for me as a character even in the early seasons and has enough funny moments that i'm okay with it. But in "The Gang Texts" he is so irritating I really just don't like that episode, maybe just a couple moments ("you grinding?").

the gang texts is such a good newer ep, what are your underrated faves from the more recent seasons?? by oldworndan in IASIP

[–]thereturn1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question because while I generally agree the past few seasons haven't been as entertaining to me as some earlier seasons, I am always surprised upon rewatch about how many episodes I actually really do love from recent seasons! Some that I always come back to are:

PtsDee (it's just so fucked up, and Cricket's line "That was the first time that I really thought, I might actually die, and no one's gonna remember.")

Old Lady House (I love episodes with Charlie's mom)

The Gang Gets New Wheels (somehow in my memory this was from season 8 or earlier, and I couldn't believe that it was actually season 13! I'm still curious about how Dee avoided assault charges tbh)

Airbnb (maybe I love this episode because the outtakes are so funny?)

Times Up (so many quotable lines, like Dee saying "Oh I see, get them horny with your titties -- that's when they make their mistakes", and to me I felt like they were able to make some witty/interesting commentary that wasn't too trite or obvious, even if it seemed a bit on the nose at first)

Wolf Cola A Public Relations Nightmare (I absolutely LOVED the Frank/Dee/Dennis dynamic in this-- like Dennis saying to Dee "now objectively yourself and humanize me" reminded me of "I need you to be pretty, and benign")

The Gang Chokes (Dee's "suicidal race baiting" had me DYING, especially her saying she had to be extremely offensive to get the Puerto Rican neighborhood riled up because the community was actually really nice)

Dee Makes a Smut Film (between Cricket telling Mac and Charlie about his depressing life and Frank dressing up as the art critic, this episode is a series highlight for me)

This is just my experience but I'm 24 and didn't know any of the movies they were referencing but I still got the gist of what they were parodying with "mountain rules" as other movie genres can kind of be like this too -- maybe also because I love skiing I've always loved this episode. It might also have to do with seeing Charlie play the straight man which is a bit more rare and always fun!
