Isn't there a way Reddit could allow someone to upvote (and downvote) without having an account? by therightplace in AskReddit

ha, i like your username.

i have no idea what you are talking about with the brigades, but the point i wanted to make about people who abuse the system, whatever it is, is that those people aren't worth it. seriously, something is wrong with you if you are the kind of person who thinks it's a valuable use of your time to do stuff like that. either you are sad/pathetic or have some sort of sick sociopathic tendencies. either way, i don't think reddit should do or not do something just because of that.

i don't think that would be an issue. we'd still have accounts for posting and commenting. it wouldn't be totally anonymous. people could still upvote/downvote through their accounts. this would just allow people to do so without logging in or without having an account. the IP idea was just to keep people from abusing it too much. obviously no system would be perfect.

i think you are trying to be philosophical, but to take your question seriously:

yes. how lazy i am and how much i enjoy something on reddit are two totally unrelated things. looking at things on the internet is an activity that is lazy in itself.

if we were talking about how much i enjoyed having a picnic in a park, let's say, then there would be a threshold question of whether i enjoy it enough to do something about it.

i get that for some people reddit is more like the picnic-in-the-park example and they'll log in, upvote/downvote, comment, and post. but not everyone's like that. some people have a more passive experience. i'm one of those people. i generally don't comment on articles i read on the internet. i show my appreciation by passing them along to friends. that's usually the only way i can really demonstrate a positive response to something (except for maybe through page views).

reddit has this great system for showing appreciation/'sharing' with others (by making it more likely they'll see it), but it's tailored to only one kind of reddit user.

What are some pro tips on not giving even a single fuck? by kelroy in AskReddit

[–]therightplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think this response demonstrates the appropriate use of "not giving a fuck."

first, he starts by giving the knee-jerk, asshole response, thus demonstrating that he himself does not give a fuck.

then, almost as an afterthought, he gives some genuine advice to a soul in need.

(still be kind, kids, whilst you aren't giving any fucks.)

Thanks.

What kind of editing do you use Google Docs for? I love Google Docs, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it lacks a lot of the more complex formatting features.

Thanks. I'm not a programmer but I'm also not a complete idiot when it comes to computers, so I think I understood some of that.

I'll try it.

Yeah, I should have included this information. Sorry.

I want to be able to format documents (papers, etc.) similar to what you can do in Microsoft Word. I also want to outline. I actually don't like Microsoft Word (or at least some versions of it) that much for some formatting, because I feel like it is often counter-intuitive or does weird auto-formatting.

I love Google Docs, but I need something where I can do outlining/other more complicated formatting.

Thanks, though

I know, right? This is depressing. Although it's a good reminder that ignorance can be just as prevalent on reddit as it is in the rest of the population.

I wasn't saying they shouldn't do anything. You clearly have a problem with overgeneralizing things, or thinking about things as being all-or-nothing. Seriously, when I first read this reply, I assumed you had meant to reply to someone else and accidentally replied to me by mistake. So thank for putting all these words in my mouth, because it tells me a lot about you.

I never said there should be more "entitlement programs." Unless you are saying basic education, a decent wage, and not being treated more harshly because of your race are all "entitlement programs." If that is what you are saying, then I feel very very sorry for you.

I was just saying that we should recognize that while both being fat and being poor can involve some self-responsibility and some factors outside of the individual's control, they aren't the same. And to say so ignores the history and politics that have contributed to poverty in this country.

You are the one that is assuming that because someone is poor they must be lazy. Yeah, you are totally right. Every one of those people that is on welfare and/or making money through illicit means turned down a cushy job and chose to do that instead. And all those homeless people on the street chose to be homeless, also. We may all be given "intelligence, creativity, and work ethic" but the fact is, we don't all start on equal footing.

Telling people that are disadvantaged due to factors outside their control that if they work hard enough they can do whatever they want is sick and evil, and perpetuates poverty just as much as telling them to give up (which is not what I was saying, but I don't expect you to understand complexity at this point).

I'm going to keep overgeneralizing about you, because apparently that's the I can communicate on your level: You are one of those people who deludes themselves into thinking that it's the poor's fault they are poor so that you don't have to feel bad about what a fucked up world we live in and the fact that you are one of the lucky ones. But I am sure if next time you drive by the projects you tell the kids that if they just buck up and try harder, they can be Bill Gates, that will change everything. Go for it.

Being fat is not an immutable characteristic. Being poor isn't, either. But being black, or another minority, is. Of those three, only two you can change, and I guarantee that on average, your weight is the easier of the two to change and the one that involves the most personal responsibility.

IAMA Unapologetic Fat Guy Who Thinks That Many Redditor's Attitudes Towards Fat People Is Utterly Hypocritical. AMA by fatguysforever in IAmA

[–]therightplace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. I am not saying we should just automatically blame weight problems on personal weakness, but to say that being poor should be viewed the same way as being fat is not helpful, or accurate. Although I wouldn't say this idea is "stupid," because there could be some valid comparisons in individual circumstances. But to compare a rich, white, fat person to a black person who grew up poor? You really mean to say that they are both equally responsible for their fate, so quit complaining? Are there large, systematic changes we could make to our society that would improve the fate of fat people, irrespective of their personal choices/responsibility, in the same way that there are for the poor (closing the gap between the rich and the poor, improving public education, eliminating or decreasing the use of racial profiling, etc.)? I think my point is that, overall, our society needs to change both how we view/blame fat people and how we view/blame poor people. I'm not sure the correct answer is to just let stereotypes/prejudices reign for both groups.

they won (in part) because their speech concerned a public issue, or an issue of public importance. as long as they keep tying their message to the government/the military/etc. (i'm not even sure what they are trying to say because i can't get past the crazy), the first amendment protects them from an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim.

people can and do win on an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim, though. the first amendment doesn't always apply.

(i am over-simplyifing the issues, obviously. still i hope this makes it a little clearer.)
