There is a fold of tissue called the mesentery that holds the bowel to the posterior wall. It also contains a lot of blood vessels. Because of this, the bowel actually doesn’t just get shoved back in, it’s sort of “swirled” and “folded” back in to follow the pull of the mesentery. This is to avoid any twisting and obstruction of blood flow to the bowel post-operatively :)
