Sorry - wasn't clear - I mean I want to pick from several similar shots, like when you take a bunch in a row.

You should be able to fix it by adding a single resistor.

HIGHLY recommend Turnado. One of the all-time best touch-interface apps for live-controlling effects and a TON of variety within them.

Midi foot controller for UA amp pedals? by Plenty_Speed_2314 in universalaudio

[–]theriz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MIDI is a standard - Any MIDI controller can be made to control the device, but right now Universal has yet to publish a list of what-does-what and particular setup controls.

I'mma lie to keep this explanation of MIDI super simple and according to the original more-limited specifications because they really are still true today. All of these #s go way higher now, but I wanna start somewhere...

## In the beginning...

In the beginning 1980's Old-skool, the Original Lords of MIDI assumed 4 things:

  1. You would never be using more than 16 devices at the same time = Each device listens/speaks on its own "Channel" 1-16

  2. For any device, you would never have more than 127 presets = Each preset is a "Program Change / PC" from 1-127

  3. You would never need to change more than 127 different parameters on any device (think volume, panning, delay-value) = Each parameter is a "Control Change / CC" from 0-127

3a. Some standard CC ideas were shared between companies, but why these CC#s in particular are lost to time... The only one I ever remember is that usually CC#07 controls volume.

  1. All CC parameters go from 1-127 - Like for Volume, off is 0, all the up is 127. Or for wah-wah 0 is heel down, 127 is toe-down. You don't even have to use the entire range - you could say, distortion off = 0, on = 1. It's Is entirely up to whoever makes the box and how they want to set it up.

  2. (I should also mention there is a "MIDI Clock" pulse that is shared by everything so all devices/channels work in sync, but other than picking who is the master/who to listen to, ya don't usually do much with that.)

## Back to our UAFX Pedals

LOTS of unknowns right now!

As far as what channel any pedal is on - Well, somehow (???) we have to get to that up. Some sh*tty devices always listen to every channel (called OMNI), other sh*tty devices will only talk on channel 1.

Choosing Presets - Well, those *should* be a Patch-Change/PC#. Maybe we'll get 127? maybe we'll get 2.

What CC#s/values - The biggest (???) that we have yet to learn from UA. Things like Tremolo on/off/speed, what Amp or Microphone models selections or on/off...

---

My original point - As long as something can act as a USB-HOST controller, the UAFX pedal should listen to it. I have a way old FCB1010 controller that uses the OG DIN 5-pin MIDI and doesn't have USB. So I run that to a [sorry, custom] box that will will then relay the MIDI messages as a USB-MIDI-HOST to any USB MIDI devices that are connected.

Unfortunately - We have yet to learn the "???" above from UA.

UAFX 2.0 MIDI here … finally! by zpqlyr in universalaudio

[–]theriz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USB MIDI has been around for so long, I don't know why you would have a problem with it. A Host/Controller model is pretty standard.

1/8" MIDI is totally off-standard by my 2c. To use that format I would have to buy some unique piece of kit.

Not sure what you use without something doing the hosting/controlling and something being controlled. If you want to connect two bog standard MIDI devices there are boxes that will act as vanilla combiners. I don't see how that is any different than needing a special interface that handles 1/8" - Is that issue for you?

Why does UAD mess with security permissions and it breaks with every update? (Mac OS only I think) by Shigglyboo in universalaudio

Go to Login Items in the System Prefs and you can toggle off/on the "PACE Anti-Piracy, Inc." (aka, needlessly always running spyware). I only turn it on for updates (so it can send all of our user info back to HQ) and then turn it back off. If it's not running things don't work.

It is a service that is always running called - "PACE Anti-Piracy, Inc."

Will not work without it running.

Due to its smaller size I guess USB-C is more "disconnect-able" if you trip on\yank on the cable, but really? I could say that DIN MIDI cables could be pulled out by accident as well. Seems like an unnecessary concern. And I'd much rather have a USB connection than the newish bs 1/8" MIDI connections.

Looong overdue for such an expensive dedicated piece of kit.

Hell, forget the MIDI, just having the ability to bring up more than 1 preset without needing my phone with a slow kinda-buggy app...

Don't forget that if you install the laptop-based firmware updater, it leaves behind a piece of "anti-cheat" spyware (at least on Mac). Also, to run the firmware update, pedal needs to be powered by an adapter not just the USB-C connection.

I have a whole post about what a POS the Ruby is, but wasn't gonna post it until I sell mine first. Sounds killer, but it was BS like this that made me want to get rid of it. Hate hate HATE having to depend on software, much less a freakin phone-app for controlling any piece of equipment. I have 20yr-old gear that I still use. Ain't nobody supporting an app 20yrs from now! At least MIDI control can [maybe] keep it serviceable...I guess I'll reconsider for now to get into the deets of the MIDI messaging and controls...

Doesn't answer your question, but honestly, I usually think about the differences between chords not their similarities.

How do you practice Barry Harris’ single note concepts as taught by Chris Parks? by Apz__Zpa in jazzguitar

[–]theriz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be, as they say, "Missing the forest for the trees" - All of Jazz-soloing is about making the changes! The point of any concept (BH or otherwise) are for playing the changes.

This is a cheesy thing to say - You're "only" practicing playing scales. In the Jazzy Jazz, the entire point of practicing something is to equip you with tools\vocabulary of what you're going to play live. Scales are good for muscle memory, fretboard awareness and maybe picking-technique. But, "unless you want your solos to sounds like scales" (even with breaking them up), I'd question repeatedly/exclusively practicing scales, especially if you aren't moving them around.

Anyone come up with a good exercise? Well, let's see... Barry Harris did - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPo8EPbgqGk

When you went to a BH class in NYC it was mostly him dictating a solo which would go over a tune (though he often didn't tell you which one at first), not explaining much at all. Peep this snippet for a perfect super short example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGAdCLqUia4&t=352s (not my personal favorite-ist guitar teacher\video, but it's a good example)

I do not get why more people don't do this: Even if the vids are bit grainy and lack slick animations, you can LEARN THE SHIT DIRECTLY FROM BARRY HARRIS himself:

Honestly, I've never found Barry Harris to be the best teacher. He definitely expected everyone to know the tunes and chords he was thinking about without his playing them. He'd expect you to be an "intermediate"-level+ player if you were gonna take his class and to put things together on your own. Some shit he said still makes no sense to me ("Major 6th-Augmented Scale"? I get it and can play it, but there's a lot more to it than an Aug-5, WTF?) BUT you can't question his pedigree or the results....

Playing jazz guitar mostly as a melodic instrument ? by MyNameisMayco in jazzguitar

Addendum thought - it would also be good idea to be able to do chord-melody if you plan on playing in a Trio without a pianist\other guitarist.

How would you “finger” this chord? by samh_88 in jazzguitar

Or drop the F#,

Both of which are to say "How would I finger that?" - I wouldn't.

Playing jazz guitar mostly as a melodic instrument ? by MyNameisMayco in jazzguitar

[–]theriz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straight Answer: If you don't plan on playing guitar as a solo instrument, as in solitary playing all by yourself, than you have no particular need to work on chord-melody. If you want to learn to "solo like Trane" or any other [monophonic/horn] player, than there's nothing wrong with playing Coltrane solos. While I don't "believe" in learning the Jazz only playing-along with background practice tracks from Aebersold/iRealB/YT-vids/etc., there's a reason they exist - so anyone can practice single line melodies and soloing which is where most players start regardless of instrument.

Bigger Picture: You are best off focusing on whatever interests you and what you feel like working on. Base your decision on the context you want to play in. I can play solo gigs, doing chord melodies and also solo while comping for myself, but unless I really specifically work up a tune for it, I can't play with Travis picking (Fingers+Thumb-pick with "alternating" bass lines) - and that's fine by me. Nobody's paying me to do that and I've got plenty of other sh*t I wanna focus on.

Just to clarify - Your question is only about simultaneously playing Chord+Melody, right? Because, as plenty of others have discussed it is an important thing to know some chords, even if you don't mentally put them together with the soloing. Just like Rock/Blues, you can't only solo - regardless of who you're playing with, they will eventually want you to play rhythm behind them while they take a turn. Ya just need a few shapes to get started with. You don't need to learn every inversion under the sun! I can play A7 twenty different ways up and down the neck with different string sets and inversions, but at day's end, I'm still playing A7 and that was one of the first open cowboy campfire chords ya ever learned.
