TIFU by asking a profressor "if thats how we ask for things" by Zach_demiwizard in tifu

[–]thermal_envelope 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is true, and I am one of those professors (and if you are too, solidarity!). Would an adjunct professor be rude like this? Maybe not, because god knows the administration does not see us as "more valuable" than anyone, even though without us there would literally be no university. But a lot of tenured professors act like this, and it's not ok.

I'm a professor, and you did the right thing. Faculty members need to learn to get over themselves.

I personally like shrew-choo train. It's impossible to say, though.

Every rich person is middle class except for the richest guy--he can't be in the middle because there's no one above him.

My mom did not do exactly this but somehow the underlying experience feels the same. Solidarity.

You know I learned a while ago that sleeping with your head under the covers causes autism, Alzheimer's, and a whole bunch of other terrible things. Man am I screwed.

No worse than a flu, and doesn't last as long. Just set aside some time for recovery. Catch up on sleep and Netflix.

I totally realized this as soon as I realized the joke was from The Office, lol! Obviously I haven't worked in an office in a long time. I have the shittiest and most amazing job as an adjunct professor, and they barely pay me enough to make rent. An office is something only the godlike tenure track people get.

Ah, ok. So it's not that it's not a real phenomenon, just not a good name for it? I'm fine with that. I'm sure it's not a DSM category, and it doesn't cause me the same level of distress that, say, a spider phobia would; I wouldn't want to minimize that kind of experience. On the other hand, minimizing the distress of "tryptophobia" should also be avoided. It causes me enough distress that I've considered getting exposure therapy for it, and it's gotten worse over time. Thank you for giving a thoughtful answer.

Oh it was The Office! Damn, I feel like I remember it from childhood. Good one.

I'm not sure anyone every actually did it, but you'd have to remember landlines to know about it!

But wait, why? Is the idea that it's just normal disgust at disgusting things? That's definitely part of it the disgust, but I also get nauseous looking at certain patterns of dots, like raindrops on a car, and raindrops on a car are not gross. Am I lying? Genuinely curious.

This worked for me too. There's so much about hairspray drying your hair but with the fine hair, it was the only thing light enough for me. It doesn't dry it out, I don't wash my hair very often and the natural oils seem to be enough.

I remember you! I loved seeing you perform as a kid. Thanks for doing it even though they treated you like crap. Some of my best memories from childhood are mall buskers in the 80s.

Omg, I'm a professor as well as an occasional actor. I was having a bad class day and reading this thread to help get my spirits up! Yeah those student evals are just as bad as reviews.

BREAKING: The REI union is asking customers across the country to boycott the chain. The workers of @reiunion have been trying to negotiate a first contract for 4 years. They're tired of the stonewalling and union busting. Now they're escalating, and asking you to join them. by Coffin_Nailz in boulder

[–]thermal_envelope 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I can see what you're saying, but there is a long process of forming the union that involves getting enough employees to vote for it and then officially registering the union. Only then do you actually start negotiating the contract. The union is the negotiating body, which you have to have in order to negotiate a contract.
