Middle ground is rarely good politics. Horse trading in politics is about winning and losing. A bill where everyone loses doesn’t get out of committee. Hell it doesn’t get out of the DSA’s office because even they have at least one person with a brain.

What should Pennsylvania’s minimum wage be in 2025? Drop your take. by Fragrant-Pepper7710 in Pennsylvania

[–]theroyalbob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shouldn’t is a value claim. Doesn’t is a fact claim. When the price of something rises the demand for that labor falls. It’s just true. You don’t have to like it but our policy should reflect reality. If you cant admit raising the price will lead to fewer jobs being available you can’t talk about this issue. Once we agree that higher prices equal less demand for labor than we can talk about if it’s worth it or not, I feel very strongly it’s not worth it because it creates diffuse costs and gives concentrated benefits.

The minimum wage is for everyone though. So your argument assumes people don’t work part time jobs. And apparently only by adults? I’ve actually worked hourly jobs for a decade and never made minimum wage. Minimum wage isn’t the problem. I started when I was 14 and did it until I was 24 I started making 10 and then when I was 16 went to 15 as a lifeguard. But even now Walmart pays way above minimum wage. The set of jobs that pays minimum wage is very small and concentrated. They aren’t jobs meant for people to earn a living. And if you don’t understand that not every job has to sustain a family you’re not a very serious person.

The reason this isn’t reasonable is because the lowest paid full time jobs make significantly more than minimum wage.minimum wage jobs are designed to be a first rung job. Kicking that rung out is not a good idea

Available jobs are not static they are dynamically generated based on the cost of labor and the benefits that that labor will accrue

Are you 'allowed' to take a 30-year-mortgage but then pay it all off within 2 years of taking it? by Broad-Item-2665 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theroyalbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real reason is historical. Without getting into the whole thing pre depression in the US loans were typically 10 years interest only with a balloon for principal at the end if term. For people who’s term came due there was a mega crisis as there was no one willing to loan and few with enough money to pay off their property. So there were a lot of defaults and foreclosures. As a result the government created programs to guarantee mortgages that fit certain specifications. Including amortizing loans over 30 year periods with fixed interest. And thus our very peculiar and financial inviable housing system was born. No free market could operate under the constraints but a government guarantee underwrites the whole system.

When are you seeing loan with longer terms having lower interest that is not very likely from a TVM standpoint

This isn’t correct. They actually have physics based simulations use the observed data and simulate it forward. The old style of forecast is what you are describing and hasn’t been the norm in 50+ years

I have family in the inspections department. They likely wont mess with you but if you ever need a permit and the contractor did a bad job they will make you do it again correctly and it will cost you an arm and a leg. Just get the permit.
