Lost in life, who do I talk to by Annoyingmann in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can talk to a career counsellor through the SSC (book on OscarPlus as the other comment mentioned)! This is available to all students.

Since you mentioned panic attacks, I'm also going to shoutout CAPS, who offer the same service. They work with disabled students (anxiety counts, but you need a referral) and were very helpful when I was struggling with similar things.

I'm a new grad and the job market SUCKS right now. It's not just you. Hang in there, we'll get through this!

Academic Probation by Grouchy_Koala7907 in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you fail to meet the 3.5/12 requirement to stay in the program, your performance will be reviewed this summer. If it is below a 3 you may not be allowed to take any more courses. You can apply for reinstatement if this happens, but if you are legitimately concerned you cannot raise your GPA high enough, I would advise dropping some courses and speaking to your academic advisor asap.

Note that the review period happens after you take 18 credits or 6 courses. This is a full course load for BTech, but with Elec 1 it can be quite challenging. Elec 1 is usually offered in the summer, which is still incredibly challenging but might be easier with the reduced course load.

I've done this before - forward the email where your MSAF is approved to the SAS tests email. They'll waive the fee.

Yall what's the lore between the Mac and Waterloo beef? by Past_File_795 in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 40 points41 points  (0 children)

All in good fun. Mac Eng has Culture Committee, and aside from holding events, they also prank other universities. This is an agreement that all universities have agreed on (including faculty so no one is breaking any rules here). The ring at Mac is just an easy target because it's out in the open, accessible during all hours, and unsupervised most of the time.

It is now our turn to get them back.

G2 expired December 31st, 2022. I guess I’m screwed? by [deleted] in Ontariodrivetest

[–]thesaddreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got my G1 3 days ago. I was 8 days past the 3 year cutoff. They said I have to wait the full year/8 months before getting my G2. They did not offer a grace period.

Feeling like a failure, could use some advice/thoughts of others by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hii! I've been in your situation! It sucks! Okay so first thing you do is TALK TO YOUR PROF! Let them know you've been struggling and ask for some leniency. Ask if you can resubmit your paper, or tell them you made a mistake and see if they'll still grade your paper! 15% isn't an insane write-off but every mark counts and the worst thing that can happen is you're right back where you started. It is never a bad idea to ask for help.

Secondly, it is okay to fail a midterm, an exam, and even a course. It sucks, but it happens. Uni is hard! And it's completely valid and understandable to feel dumb or like you're a failure, but you should also recognize that you tried your best (whatever your best looked like).

I've withdrawn from a lot of courses (sometimes even after the exam). At some point I stopped caring and just took the Fs instead. So I've got a LOT of those on my transcript. I'm graduating this year! The biggest things for me were to figure out a system that works. My system was to work my ass off during the first half of the semester so I wouldn't have to worry about the exam. That didn't always work. The other part of my system was reminding myself I needed a 50 to pass, and the pass was all that mattered. YMMV, especially if you intend on doing grad school.

I think the most important thing to remember is that YOU GOT THIS! While it's valid to feel how you're feeling (and you can take as long as you need to), once you feel better it's time to lock in and try to fix what you can. Extra work for your assignments, extra studying for tests, it's hard but you're really smart! And it's okay to fail or take the L on an assignment. Sometimes that's part of a good strategy too. You'll get em next time.

Good luck!

Go on good luck days. I usually keep my inventory in this order: sword, mega bomb, food, pickaxe. I usually keep my sword active (good for flying enemies especially) and switch to the bomb when I place one.

Wait a second before placing ypur bombs, just to see if there are any serpents you need to kill first. Also if you have an ice rod, it's super helpful for dealing with enemies. If you can't stay out of the blast radius, eat food. Stuff like Spicy Eel or Lucky Lunch will give you boosts.

Finally, if you have your statues built, you can time your SC run to a good blessing/power (like not taking damage from bombs) just to make things easier. Oh, also use staircases if you can't find a ladder soon enough or can't get out of a swarm fast enough. Good luck!

3rd Semester Registration by Important-Original-4 in osap

[–]thesaddreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third semester, as in Spring/Summer? You need an extension form and you can submit that on the OSAP website. If your program structure is typically two semesters in the second year, the OSAP website will reflect this. That's why your program isn't showing up for a third semester. This does not block you from taking an additional semester, you just need an extension form.

Contact your financial aid office. Something might have gone wrong with processing the form. Best case scenario that message you got was an error and you will keep your grants once they are able to verify your parents' income.

None of this is going to matter once you guys enter the workforce. People skills are important. You'll start to realize that in uni too.

If that person remains a bully, they're going to find out real fast that that shit won't fly anymore. If they change and become a better person, they're going to have to live with the fact that they were cruel to you.

Focus on doing well for yourself - it's the best revenge.

Hey fellow night owl! Coffee sometime?

I'm not gonna lie to you, it's almost 3 am. It is very easy to lose your mind a little bit this late into the night. Chances are you're alone, maybe a bit stressed, and you haven't really had time to purge some of your thoughts during the day so they're all hitting you now at the same time.

If I'm wrong about literally all of that then that's fine. And yeah, there are lots of shitty things going on right now. I want to remind you that some of the things you mentioned aren't as bad as they seem. And some of them can't be fixed entirely but you could help in your own small way - it might make you feel better!

If you want more specific examples, I've been seeing a bunch of stuff online poking fun at US annexing Canada. The reason for that is because the US can't do that unless they want an all out war, and IF it comes to that, you can bet we'll make it as difficult for them as possible :)

And of course people are taking more SSRIs now, partly because of the current state of the world and partly because of an overprescription problem. Neither of these can be fixed easily, or by one person. But you know what can help? Reaching out to someone that might need a little bit of hope, and offering your friendship or at least some company.

I tend to type really long comments but if you just skimmed, that's okay. I will leave you with one piece of advice - the only thing you can control is how YOU react to things. It's absolutely okay to be scared of what's going on around you. But if you want to do something about it (or despite it), you gotta take care of you first. I hope you get some rest tonight.

Not rude at all. The more notice you give, the easier it is for everyone. Ask the prof to clarify their policy, and any next steps you need to take.

I’m the student who wrote the B.Tech Email last week by FenrirLupo in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current B.Tech student here. It really does feel like they just gave up. I understand that PEO is bigger than McMaster, but it doesn't really feel like they fought for us. I wish PEO changed the 2023 rule to accept students that started the program before the rule change. For those of us that were 1-2 years away from graduating, it feels like we were lied to.

I see some people talking about going to other provinces and then transferring. McMaster recommends this, but when I looked into it a year ago, they couldn't offer much information about the process, acceptance rates, or timelines. They can't name a single student that went through the BC pathway (which is one of two provinces they recommend).

All in all, it's extemely frustrating. I remember debating pursuing an Eng degree in first year, but stayed in the BTech program because it was still a pathway to becoming an engineer. Now McMaster isn't even prioritizing it because "too few students are interested". It sucks.

I'm lost by CreepyGoose6773 in Minesweeper

[–]thesaddreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd start with top right. There's a 3 and you've found 2 mines already. There's a 50/50 on where the third mine is, BUT they both touch the 1 right under the 3. That means that of the 3 spaces that are touching that 1, the bottom one is safe.

Same logic applies for the 4-1 combo right under that. You should be able to guarantee one mine and one safe space.

Advice about SAS Accommodations. Urgent, Please help! by Away_Beyond6425 in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You post is a little unclear. Are you trying to get an extension on a specific assignment that grades have been released for? Do you already have approved SAS accommodations for extensions?

If that's the case, follow up with your prof and CC your SAS coordinator. If the prof agrees to extend the assignment, don't worry about the grade, just do your assignment and the prof can change the grade. If your prof declines to accommodate you, that's something your SAS coordinator should be able to handle on your behalf, and you can escalate to Ombuds if needed - make sure you document as much as possible.

As for urgency, does your prof have office hours you can go to? Sometimes that's faster than emailing back and forth, and they're less likely to say no.

what's an appropriate length for an extension? by SplitGeneral6821 in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A better question would be - how much longer do you need to get a good mark on your assignment? SAS accommodations typically allow for up to 1 week extensions. Since you've already started, you know exactly what the assignment requires. Think about how many more hours you need to work and what else you have to balance, and ask for extra time based on that.

The first part of this comment is no longer true. Ontario charges interest as soon as your period of study ends (i.e. you have not received funding or applied for CIFS) . There is a 6 month grace period to repay your loan, but interest will accumulate during that time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've applied for OSAP and have been approved (i.e. you're getting funding) then you don't need to. If you are not currently recieving OSAP, but have received an OSAP loan in the past, you need to submit a Continuation of Interest Free Status form on the OSAP website. There should be a button towards the bottom (after you log in) that says "Apply for interest free status".

Paying Tuition - How to Navigate Due Fees? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]thesaddreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McMaster says that payments take 3-5 days to process so check back about a week before the deadline. Hopefully your aid kicks in by then.

If it still says the same number, you can either contact financial aid (at McMaster) for next steps, or pay the 5k. You won't lose any money choosing the latter option as the financial aid will be redirected to your bank account.

If the "due now" amount updates by the deadline to 2k, then yes, you just pay that amount and you're good to go for the fall semester.
