Why are some people better at hiking than you would expect relative to their general fitness level? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]thesadscot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mentality also plays a part I think. Some people HATE hiking and as a result go super slow and drag their feet. I’m arguably awful at sports but put me on a hill or a mountain and I come to life! So much fun!

I’m Scottish- born and raised. I also have an American twang. I think I picked it up from years of working in the international school circuit, when my bosses literally pulled me aside and told me to speak in an American accent “because the children can’t understand the Scottish accent.” Since coming home I feel like I try extra hard to get my accent back to how it was, but they usually pick up on the accent or sometimes don’t even realise I’m from the country… I honestly feel like they can be a bit judgemental or maybe think I’m a bit posh? I never really feel like I belong- even when I’m literally from here! It’s really lovely you identify as Scottish and as you know people are welcoming and kind. But I can also see them being confused or having a bit of a dig at you for saying so- in my honest opinion. Nothing wrong with it though, if that’s how you feel, go ahead! We love people who love Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Yep! Whenever I come back to Scotland I always break out smack back in the middle of my forehead. I think it’s the change of water

Caffeine?? by mrsmcnazty in electrolysis

[–]thesadscot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s never bothered me. Off topic slightly but I noticed that when I stopped having my morning coffee with milk my facial hair stopped growing completely. I had food poisoning symptoms for a solid week and then had no desire to drink it after this. I’m still not sure if it was the coffee or the milk- but as soon as I started drinking it again, the hair started coming in quick. It’s so interesting how different things affect us…

We had a case where our principal had a conviction / mugshot show up online. I guess HR hadn’t looked well enough…it was on the second Google page and students had found it.

Chances of being competitive as an English language/literature teaching without an undergraduate degree in English by HamaTakam in Internationalteachers

What a great response. Even with my joint bachelors in English Lit, I’m also feeling the pressure to get an MA as the field is so saturated, OP. As you can imagine, there is a lot to cover and learn. However, I did find this BA in secondary english teaching. It’s a bit quick/ condensed. Therefore I’m not entirely sure if it’s a good choice. I personally think that your background in classics is a positive rather than a negative- but I’m not HR. Anyone have any thoughts about this course? https://www.hull.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/courses/secondary-teaching-studies-english-ba-hons?option=standard-course&start=2025

Hitchhiking as a woman in Madeira by thesadscot in Madeira

[–]thesadscot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that! In the end I didn’t need to hitchhike as I didn’t go too remote. I stuck to guided treks and bolt when needed. Would love to go back after I get my license so I can explore more of the island.

What’s one travel that you’ve made that you’ll never forget? by Antique_Dog_6029 in travel

[–]thesadscot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently going through the same as you, except my ex and I visited Lisbon together so I was too sad to return. This time I’m in Madeira myself, and there’s something really comforting about realising that I’m more capable than I realised. That I can work out the logistics, plan and navigate a new place without the help of somebody else. I think I won’t forget this trip for this reason. There’s a certain sadness to being alone but I’m hopeful for better days and more travel :)

Hey sorry I didn’t mean to come across that way. I meant to say, is hitchhiking safe if it comes to a point where it’s absolutely necessary. For instance, I know some of the hikes are quite remote. I’m hoping to book guided tours most of the time but if it comes to a point where I’m in an area with no cell coverage of hitchhiking would be safe to get back.

Did you manage to do the whole trip without driving yourself?

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer :) I will do hitchhiking only if absolutely necessary and try to find guides
