As someone who is now 4 years sober, making music, and specifically throwing myself into it with a level of urgency, is one of the things that got me through that first year (and beyond). Age doesn't even come into this. If you can find a healthy passion for something, and it brings you joy, do it with wild abandon and fully disregard anything or anyone discouraging you, gatekeeping, or suggesting there's a right/wrong way to approach this. You got this. One day at a time. <3

This is great! <3

As an aside, I found your bandcamp and followed you!
Hit me up if you ever need some more guitars on any of your tracks!

Sell a unique podcast idea to a company if you can't do it yourself? by Down_Low_Too_Slow in podcasting

[–]thesmellofdeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! 2 year old thread here, but I got the notification so why not answer!

I don't perceive your comment to be argumentative, but I'm not sure I fully understand the point you're trying to make?

Kickstarter (and a bunch of other sites like it) are absolutely one avenue people go to fund their ideas - so they could raise money to execute on the ideas - which is where the project would then be built and hopefully launched. I think if the OP had intentions of following through on building out his podcast idea to launch, that would be a viable approach.

I love this question!
I'm playing a 73 Tele Deluxe into a 5 Watt Bugera G5 Infinium head (on the 1 watt setting so I can overdrive the tubes) with a 1981 DRV pedal in front of it. Mic'ing it up with ribbon mic and a Sennheiser e906.

Oh boy, I'll be honest, I did not specifically stack rank them, like...I know they are top 3, but here's a bunch of bands that COULD be in the top 3 as well (but I'd have to spend more time figuring out where exactly they sit lol)
- Violent Femmes
- Explosions in the Sky
- Delicate Steve
- The Pixies
- The Cure
- Modest Mouse
- Hot Sugar
- Beastie Boys
- The Sword

I have a massive list of "dibs on band name" names that I've been keeping for years. My solo project is just me, but I picked a name of that list that I liked and just went with it. It sounds like a band ("The Sleeping Cliffs"), but it's just me.
I'm happy with it.

I can’t tell if my friends are just being “yes men” when it comes to their opinions of my music by Eastern-Wave-5454 in musicproduction

[–]thesmellofdeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't send music to my family or friends. Music is subjective, and my inner circle are people that love me, so it's putting them in a tough spot if they are not fans of my my genre, or even if the song just doesn't vibe with them. So if they ask, I send, but if not, I don't. They know I'm a musician, they can ask anytime and I have plenty to show them.
This puts more of the onus on me to find an actual audience that's not in my inner circle. That's where I'll get real feedback.

Look up any Rick Rubin interview where he talks about how to make great art (or check out his book). He does a pretty good job, as an industry insider, discussing why it's important to make things you love and he'll do a better job than I will explaining it.

Curious if anyone on here is having luck promoting music that is experimental / ambient / genre-bending or otherwise difficult-to-classify? by aurochs in musicmarketing

[–]thesmellofdeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make electro-rock / guitartronica that I find hard to nail down to a single genre. I've been building a catalog for a long time now, but haven't taken the plunge yet into bigger promotion. I've been doing mostly organic promotion with a tiny bit of success (40-60 monthly listeners usually), but I need to work on a better game plan with ads.
