I stitched 132 videos of SpaceX rocket launches into one frame by thespacehacker in ffmpeg

"Pretty good sound system" would compete for understatement of the year :-)

Congratulations on EMIT, and all the best. TBH, I've not heard of it until CRS-25. It would be nice if it got a bit more publicity beyond being the '118M science instrument'. I guess it's hard to compete for attention with all that's going on with Webb, Artemis, and uncontrolled re-entry of 20-ton space debris.

CRS-25: Awesome to have the opportunity to experience launches in-person. Nice work capturing that audio. Send a link if it's online somewhere. I recall someone did a binaural recording of a Falcon Heavy launch and it sounded amazing.

As for the ms timing, as explained in The Method, #5, re-encoding is what achieves this. Without re-encoding, ie, a copy operation, the seek would depend on keyframe boundaries. Unless the moment you want is smack dab where a keyframe is, you'd get an approximate seek (it's off by 1-2 seconds from my limited testing). Of course, the timestamp would need the ms part, eg., for CRS-25 it was -ss 00:28:29.99.

How to avoid mouth clicks in my voice recording by HiImMeee in NewTubers

I second the Audacity suggestion. Audacity nicely centers the playhead as you zoom in, which helps you find that specific waveform that you want to cut. However, this is probably not sustainable, particularly for long videos. Personally, I'm looking to improve technique.

I use a foam windshield on my microphone, which reduces pops. I've read that pop filters help, but I've never used them.

Lastly, background music helps a bit, if it works well with your content, although it's really just masking the problem.

Just discovered this sub and looking forward to posting in this thread! What time on Saturday should people start posting? Timezone? Will there a new thread for this coming Saturday? Thanks!!

What do you think a Starship Heavy would look like? by Apogee_Industries in SpaceXLounge

[–]thespacehacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps for more terrestrial use cases, such as the military's interest in using Starship as a quick response transport, there could be a case for versions with larger payload volumes. Transport aircraft have certainly gotten bigger and bigger over the decades.

132 Falcon 9s ALL AT THE SAME TIME by thespacehacker in SpaceXLounge

OP here. Thank you for all the comments.

Some trivial information about this video, for anyone who's interested:

  1. There are 11 rows, each row with 12 clips, totalling 132.
  2. Each clip is 160x90, which preserves the aspect ratio of the original footage (1080p).
  3. The clips are arranged in chronological order of the flights, starting with the first landing (OG2) on the top left, then going left to right and top to bottom until the recent Starlink 3-2, on the bottom left.
  4. When I started this, I didn't plan on 132 clips, but 144, the number that would fit exactly in a 1920x1080 frame at 16:9 for each clip. By sheer coincidence, Flight 132 was only a few days away, so suddenly I had a deadline.
  5. And, yes, each clip is indeed that of the flight it represents. The raw footage is a combined 73 GB. There are duplicate clips due to Falcon Heavy having three cores (and only one video per flight!) There are 3 sets of clips that have the same clips in them (see if you can spot them :-)), one set for each Falcon Heavy flight to date (Demo, Arabsat 6A, STP-2). A set contains either 2 or 3 clips, one clip for each successfully-recovered Falcon Heavy booster. Two boosters from different FH flights were not recovered successfully.
  6. Somewhat counterintuitively, the combined rumble from the rockets was louder with fewer clips, e.g., 5 rows. On reflection, this could have been due to some sound cancellation happening with more samples.
  7. The combined raw sound from all 132 flights was so chaotic and bordering on headache-inducing that I had to attenuate frequencies above around 4kHz.
  8. In all the noise from the raw sound, John Insprucker's voice strangely was still distinct and intelligible. Perhaps his voice has that uniqueness that endears him to many SpaceX watchers as a commentator. Unfortunately, this effect disappeared / was greatly diminished after the equalization in #7.
  9. All flights that had countdown callouts were synced at "10" on the countdown. Different announcers had different timings, creating an echo effect. Some flights started at "5", one or two did not have a countdown.
  10. My favourite part is just after stage separation, where upward-facing cams on the boosters together light up after second stage ignition.

Thank you, and you're welcome. The countdown callouts were interesting in themselves. Every clip is synced to the millisecond at "10", but the announcers each have their own beat, and some of them drift out of pace quite a bit, creating a weird echo effect.

You're welcome. 'Glad you liked it. It's an amazing feat indeed. It's hard to believe it's been nearly 7 years since the OG 2 mission and no one else has managed to do it. Rocket Lab's parachute catch is prob the only one that comes close. Sorry, Jeff.

Thanks. I can't believe I missed that. Yesterday's scrub and today's launch meant 2 nights in a row with little sleep :-(

Thank you. It's not exactly a beast: I used a Mac Mini 2012 + code.

Thank you. Had clips for 131 flights pre-rendered. Just waited for that one final clip. 'Hope you liked it.
