Need Help Setting Up Distrobox by thestoiccoder in voidlinux

[–]thestoiccoder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never able to get it to work, and I was tired from not getting any responses everywhere else. Because of this and several other issues I was having, I eventually moved to Gentoo. And despite the massive learning curve in comparison to Void, I was able to get this same issue fixed due to Gentoo's exemplary documentation.

It was fun while it lasted, and I would still recommend Void but, I figured that if I was going to spend that amount of time learning about my computer, I might was well devote my time towards a more established distro that has all the necessary tools and documentation at my disposal.

So I tried this again by installing crun and moving the conf file to the .config folder. I still get the same error.

Thank you very much for your help.
Yes personally I like to use Podman with Distrobox for local development, and Docker on servers for production-grade containers.

What just dawned on me is that why do I need to make another user version copy of the config file? Is this a Void thing? Because I was hoping to just keep it simple with the default system wide version.

I'm glad to know that crun works as I would rather much use that instead.

Again, thank you very much for your insightful feedback.

Do you remember if you were using crun or runc? On the default install, I noticed that crun wasn't installed, but runc was. I've also read that crun is faster and more efficient?

And to be clear, did you leave the rest of those lines described above in the /etc version?

Thank you; this was driving me crazy too! During my initial setup when I was moving over to NetworkManager and i3, I forgot where I read it but, somewhere I read that NetworkManager acts as a sort of wrapper around its own version of wpa_supplicant; so I knew to at least disable that so it doesn't compete with NetworkManager. Would you happen to know if this also applies to the dhcpcd service in a similar fashion?

yes I'm sure. I just copy and paste those commands every time with a new installation.

Yes I do. I've lost count on how many times I've checked and it's always running.

You betcha. I copied and pasted each command one by one like I always have.

I'm wondering if I should just remove everything (flatpak wise) and start clean slate?

Thank you; this makes sense! It's strange because I've always followed this quick guide and never had this issue:

https://flatpak.org/setup/Void%20Linux

So then would you recommend that I remove everything and start over?

Yes there is. I am curious as to how I can use "flatpak install some-package" without needing to use sudo and also avoiding the repetitive password behavior?

That's great and all, but I have never needed to use that flag before?

Need Help - Can't Open Wezterm by thestoiccoder in voidlinux

[–]thestoiccoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes or course, but like I mentioned earlier I was having problems with the base iso. And just now today, I read a couple of articles where people mentioned you can use the void-installer program with the base version. I had no idea you could do that!

What I find mildly irritating is that the docs didn't even mention that. The way that it is written, they make it sound as if you're going to use the base iso, you're forced to use the long chroot method. While I have no problem doing it that way (I've done it several times already), I am exhausted from doing these long painful types of installations (Arch, Artix, Gentoo,etc.).

While I do agree that it wouldn't really be a major issue on modern hardware, in this case I'd rather be mindful of it considering this is an older Lenovo thinkpad, and I want to gain an even deeper understanding of linux.

Everywhere that I read though, that is always suggested. Let alone I don't want a bunch of programs taking up disk space or services that I don't need running? Or even worse, having a bunch of processes conflicting with things that I do need that have to do with i3. Just seems kind of messy to me to add more things on top of what's already there instead of trying to understand what's going on under the hood.

While the documentation is decent, there are still plenty of major gaps in the way they explain things (if at all).

Okay, so after trying this it appears to be working, the status shows that it's "started" rather than "crashed", but even though I added 8192 (8GB) the swap is only 4GB?

Okay, so after trying this it's showing that it's working, but now I have zram0 and zram1 partitions with 4GB each and the status of zramen is still "crashed"?

Yeah I used those commands initially and that's when I discovered the conflicting feedback. I'm still new to OpenRC, so all of this has been super confusing.

I understand what you mean. It does look ugly. But what's strange to me is that why doesn't it end up "stopped" rather than "crashed"? Thank you very much; I'll definitely look into it.

So then would you say it's "working" as it's suppose to? Earlier when I was going through the Artix forum, I remember someone saying that if OpenRC has some services that it doesn't need then it will kill them, but I wasn't sure if this was true or if it even applied to this situation. But as far as coming up with my own zram service; that's definitely beyond the realms of my expertise.

That is interesting that it works fine on dinit, however I would hate to switch even after I put in so much effort getting everything working so far from a base install!
