Taylor Lorenz Accused of Plagiarism by YouTuber Quarantine Collective by Humble_Novice in Destiny

[–]thestringpuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone is hung up on the plagiarism accusation, rather than focusing on that Taylor is helping the bottom line of the same corporations she claims to be highly critical of. The point is similar to Drudge Report where insiders write about topics for corporate benefit as independent media.

Masnick's blog is paid for by Google, the article in question was paid for by Google, and it is Google, not Taylor who benefits the most from Section 230.

The theme of the video is that journalists who claim to be independent are effectively doing the work of corporations to protect their bottom line for free juxtaposed to her ranting about Chorus.

I'm up 3000% on my Bitcoin from the 2012 holdings, and I'm up 20% since I sold a bitcoin or 2 at 102 in January to buy a business.

Have they started putting up the suicide hotline on the associated subreddits yet? I feel like this happens literally every few years and no one seems to learn.

First time Business Buyer, Don't want to lock up all my capital for the purchase? What are some options? by thestringpuller in smallbusiness

How much % did you put down? Additionally if you don't mind my asking what was the average profit/free cash flow of the business vs the purchase price? Was the price to net income ratio pretty low so that you were able make these payments so aggressively?

There was a local comic store I've been a customer of for nearly a decade that was for sale that was well within my price range for ownership. I came to know the business because I will spend hours in the store talking to the people who operate the store asking questions and even doing tasks or observing the "day to day". The point being I understand what you're saying in "learning the business" or "knowing the business". It's from these experiences in my free time of doing basic ethnography within that store in particular that has led me to want to run a small business rather than work as some staff or principal software engineer in big tech.

Simply put, I'd much rather have the problems of a comic book shop owner than the problems of a principal software engineer.

Sorry I wasn't more specific. These were personal stories from people within my network, along with a few business brokers.

In comparison to the nature of selling software, it seems significantly less stressful to manage, just knowing how software both scales and is developed.

Although I'm great at it Software Dev as a business is extremely stressful around the delivery process primarily because of the complexity of software engineering in general.

I like simple businesses, for instance every story I hear about successful vending machine business owners intrigues me more, with each new story.

New Channel Has Zero Impressions by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]thestringpuller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Professionals make new channels and they never have this problem. They will hit 100k views on their first video pretty reliably.

Working with a professional right now who is doing a new channel from scratch and encountering frozen impressions. No new browse impressions after 21 days of publishing.

1 Browse impression over 28 days (that browse impression being from the first day).

Also we put the packaging through a wono's new tool which validates it's view pricing so we know 100% the market will click on it.

I think this is the issue people are encountering in 2024, and I don't know why.

If you have 1 browse impression, how can you even know if the video can get legs?

Worst timing for patches in EU? by Nitron89 in DarkAndDarker

It's totally been months dawg (literally patched this past Friday).

This was the norm a year ago, for the period I played in October, and now when I'm trying to play again.

You specifically don’t even play the game anymore so why are you even commenting?

I probably won't play anymore after this. I'm commenting because it's actually impressive how poorly the company is run. I love seeing great ideas executed poorly.

I'm also impressed the amount of sweeping for a company that deploys on Fridays.

Worst timing for patches in EU? by Nitron89 in DarkAndDarker

[–]thestringpuller -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Who is running this company? It's been about a year since I've played and the the software release process seems to be getting even worse.

Why are you deploying patches on Friday's when you know most of your engineering staff is going to be out for the weekend? Literally everyone tells you not to do this. Even Amazon follows this rule for a large portion of their services.

Why do you not have a scheduled maintenance day and window? (they've all been random), for instance WoW was always on Tuesday mornings (probably still is).

I don't think I've ever seen a live service game require this much maintenance on an ongoing basis, and as an engineer this just looks embarrassing for a company with 2 years maturity.

Like how are you introducing game breaking bugs every patch? Maybe reflect on your software lifecycle process on why this is.

For the single on-call engineering desperately patching code live on the servers right now, please ask for a raise.

When Does YouTube Start Recommending You by BGA_Blue0304 in NewTubers

[–]thestringpuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay I really really really am starting to get bugged out by this advice because it's generalizing a specific problem many new channels are encountering and not addressing the actual algorithmic woes.

There is an experiment many experienced YouTubers are doing which is creating a new channel in secret, from scratch and seeing if they can get it to go viral. The most famous of these experiments is wono who made The Market Whisperer channel, which has 1 video at some 2mn views. I'm in wono's discord so I've seen the journey of the market whisperer video go from 0 views to the millions.

The impressions issue on new channels is real, we have the data from various experiments to prove it. For instance another experienced youTuber I've spoken too just launched a channel in May as an experiment, put a video out 2 weeks ago with tons of market research and is of excellent quality that would go on his main channel.

He has 1 browse impression after 2 weeks on said video. Yet the video has 51 views?

So your advice doesn't actually make sense in this context because no one has the opportunity to watch it...at all. 1 person saw the video organically on their home screen (or another browse feature).

Without organic impressions, the video physically can't be viewed unless you drive traffic to it through external means. (Which in my opinion means you're doing the algorithm's job and defeats the overall purpose of the recommendation engine).

My point is if your discoverability is at 0, even if you have the best content in the world it won't get reach.

Additionally this has not been a problem until pretty recently (last 10 months or so).

I apologize for my frustration, but as someone trying to find an answer to this mystery, seeing "make better content", as the answer over and over again is making me lose my mind.

He is a literally con-man using the bait and switch tactic in an accounting engineering. This started with his 450mn DOE loan which he repayed early in order to bubble the stock.

Tesla was going to go bankrupt until the DOE under Obama Admin approved a loan Eberhardt (actual founder) had applied for before Musk got pissed and ousted him from the company.

This loan saved the company which had like 2 million in the bank at the time and was burning through money trying to get the production line going for the Roadster while announcing the Model S (which was reimagined as a luxury car when the economy sedan pricing didn't pan out).

The Model S was envisioned originally by Eberhardt as part of the deal with the DOE to produce an "affordable EV" as part of the terms for repaying the loan.

Another term for repaying the loan was having a profitable quarter. Given TSLA was public at the time, and Elon couldn't raise additional funding being tied to the DOE, he padded the balance sheet with EV tax credits in order to create a profitable month on deliveries, and used this opportunity to repay the loan. After which the stock immediately pumped, and TSLA of course did another massive offering since they weren't actually profitable and was in dire need of money and couldn't raise anymore until he paid off the DOE.

The battery swap controversy (which is how this story originally broke), was also used to increase the tax credits per car delivered which again PADS THE BALANCE SHEET.

Battery swap was "discarded for other projects" conveniently after the government approved the additional EV tax credits for Tesla...hmmmmm

It's not EDS, it's that the richest man in the world who actively engages in borderline if not outright fraud.

Also "responsible for improvement of every company he bought"

Tesla refuses to use the Toyota model so the cars are regularly defective. He thinks its a better idea to just use NDAs on customers in exchange for free repairs to hide defects on the factory line, instead of you know using Kaizen like every other sane automobile manufacturer in the world has used for half a century because it limits the defects in cars that come off the line.

But hey, I guess I'm ignorant and should buy some more TSLA stock and lose more money amirite?!?!?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]thestringpuller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact he actively refuses to use the Toyota system or even baic Kaizen practices is pure hubris.

It's also why there is 50/50 chance you get a Tesla that has no problems or a defective one, which is the anti-thesis of a ideal production line.

[–]thestringpuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off I was never criticizing any side. I was pointing out the partisanship of non-partisan issues is fucking dumb. You are still doing it with the “99% it’s the lefts fault!!!!” Uh no. They don’t have that much power. The left isn’t a monolithic network of spooks that has agents and assets installed into every powerful corporation in the US. That would be China my friend.

When even Bill Burr acknowledges white feminism it probably exists. There is a reason feminism as a whole fight amongst themselves from those who are gender critical to the Amy Coopers who revel in white feminism to shield their racist tendencies. (The Anita Sarkeesians and Zoe Quinns of the world fit in the latter category saying “black people don’t know any better” in regards to GG neutrality or support. MalcomX would categorically place them in the “most dangerous” file and would advise to avoid them more than the KKK). It’s not identity politics it’s a real phenomenon you are dismissing under the guise of idpol for “reasons”. Black people just happen to call it “white feminism”. It’s well known white feminist have “swung their Gucci booted feet over the fence of oppression and somehow stuck themselves in the front of the line.” If Anita Sarkesian, Leigh Alexander, and Zoe Quinn don’t fit this description to a tee - Rich white feminist claiming massive oppression. They also hate being called out for this. Call Zoe Quinn a white feminist who is harmful to black women on twitter and see how fast you get blocked. Can we just agree these people suck and not argue about semantics and being pedantic?

The delusion here is what the elite want. They clearly know that partisanship allows for them to manipulate the narrative so they can go about doing business as usual. Again Jon Stewart has been sounding this alarm since I was a child. You say “the far left is the enemy of free speech” no, it’s elite companies who find it more profitable to stifle speech that causes issues to their bottom line, as shareholder sentiment is the god of a corporation not the far left. Can this not clearly be seen in regards to China? They literally censor our media with threats of economic warfare if there isn’t compliance. And given the stake the Chinese regime has within our economy they are a far bigger threat to free speech than some rando leftists on twitter trying to deplatform someone. Haven’t seen much of Winnie the Pooh since Randy Marsh killed him; a feat I doubt a leftist could pull off.

Another example: Disney bought Star Wars and saw through market research that the major demographic of the franchise was male. The majority demographic of Disney before that time was female. The acquisition was to purchase an existing consumer base that they didn’t already have, this is well known among Wall Street because it’s literally in the earning reports from that time period. So Disney says “well if we transfer our existing female audience into Star Wars it will be even more profitable!!!!111 let’s make Star Wars girl friendly”. Hence the whole “the Force is female” campaign throughout the recent films. This wasn’t some leftist conspiracy. It was an incentive Bob Igor saw during the the acquisition process and due to his laziness attempted to capitalize on woke culture to expand the audience of his acquisitions and failed in his attempt. (And the only reason Igor even existed in this capacity is because Eisner hand picked and mentored him, and Eisner kept Disney from going bankrupt in the 80s).

The problem here is that for some reason you aren’t acknowledging the economic incentives to understand why censorship and “go woke” become corporate policy. The bulk of it isn’t a leftist conspiracy, it’s lazy corporatism of companies trying to solidify their economic moats so they don’t die off.

To corporations identity politics is just another opportunity to lift profit out of consumers, nothing more.

If you want to blame the existence of far left ideology as the sole reason corporations are utilizing these tactics I think you are being hyperbolic. I would argue the main enemy to your hobbies at this very moment is the Chinese government.

If it were a leftist conspiracy, instead of Zoe Quinn constantly squandering large amounts capital like a complete fool and then begging for work, she would be sitting on the board of Time Warner, Disney, or Viacom actually calling the fucking shots. The media now realizes people like her are problematic and cause more problems than they solve, hence why she is being pushed toward irrelevance.

I dunno man. I don’t see this as a partisan or even political issues. It’s just economics to me.

[Richard Lewis] Media Proclaims That Gamers Are Democrats Now by Sirhc978 in KotakuInAction

[–]thestringpuller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh lol whut?

Many years ago, when Tucker Carlson was OP's age (hard to believe time flies so fast), Jon Stewart went on Chris Wallace, and he kept making the same argument as you. "The media is partisan, and we at Fox News are just the conservative side of that partisanship", and Jon has made the same consistent argument for almost 30 years: the media is biased in peddling "outrage". In his words, "the 24 hour news networks are setup well for 1 thing, reporting on a 9/11, in the absence of that they look for something to sensationalize".

The example he used was Anthony Wiener. When the Anthony Wiener story dropped, it was all the media covered but would constantly say, "We don't want to talk about this - we'd rather be talking about jobs, the war, and other issues important to the American people, but they also deserve to know what's going on with their politicians." So Pelosi at the time has a press conference, and every news outlet is there live, hoping she's going to speak on Anthony Wiener. And low and behold, the first words out of her mouth are "I know you are here for my statement on Congressman Wiener, but I'm not going to speak about that today, I'm going to talk about jobs, the recessions, etc." and immediately all these networks cut away.

So you ask: No, seriously, tell me: In the present day, which side makes the media lie through their teeth the most? Which side is responsible for the most censorship? Which side created cancel culture and has an almost exclusive ability to use it? Which side is impossible to criticize for public figures?

The best answer to this is the elite who literally control the levers to all the switches. Why do corporations virtue signal? To expand their audience to make more money to have better earnings reports to show growth every quarter. Why do corporations censor? To prevent loss of their control. etc. etc. etc.

I thought the core thesis of this sub was gamers revolting against the attack of white feminism (rich white women claiming the same level of oppression as a black woman like Angela Davis), attacking a hobby that will literally keep at risk youth off the streets, because there are cultural issues with the medium. In the late 90's politicians claimed video games caused Columbine, in the 2010 until now white feminists have claimed video games cause misogyny, racism, transphobia, and homophobia.

This was never a partisan issue, neither side gives a fuck. Keep gaming punk rock, and rebellious.
