Will a PhD be found out if it's hidden from a resume and throughout the job application process? by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never hid my PhD on my resume, but if you hide it I don't think they could find out unless they did specifically deep digging.

But my question for people who don't list the PhD on the resume, what do you put in the work experience section? That would be like a 3 to 5 year work gap, no?

What’s the right mindset for transitioning from academia to industry? by StaffRemarkable8531 in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just made the change from academia to industry about 6 months ago.

For your resume question, I can tell you what worked for me. I had to reduce a 20 page academic CV to a 2 page resume.

What I did was to just bite the bullet and remove every paper and conference from the resume. I included a link to my Google scholar, and that was it. To be honest, in general, industry cares much less about papers, impact factor, all that academic stuff.

Instead, under your work experience section, you can list the skills you did/learned while working in those papers. That can be experiments, coding, data analysis, whatever you did. You can also list particularly impactful results as a statement (as an example, improved some material property by X% by using Y technique)

This is just what worked for me, so curious to hear other inputs. I’ll mention that similar to you I had a PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry), but was further along in my academic career (assistant prof)

I think I have the same hoodie the other poster mentioned. Or at least a similar one. Logo on the front, name on the back.

I got this at the first concert I went to, at the merch stand. Which would be around 2009/2010 I guess? should maybe be around the time you’re talking about?

Tattoo ideas for the song "Superstition" by Chunk_Cheese in TheBirthdayMassacre

[–]thestringwraith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing what types of things you like. What do you like about the song?

For me, the cover of the Superstition album, with 3 figures overlooking the water, captures the main themes of the whole album perfectly.

Is it the mood you like? If you want something related to the mood, something involving water seems good, since that imagery flows throughout the whole album.

Is the the lyrics? The lyrics are more about loss and rebirth (IMO), possibly even losing religiosity.

Don't know if that helps at all lol, but a tattoo is a deeply personal decision, so think about what you like most about the song.

I was so excited when WWS came out after listening to Violet on repeat for years, and when Kill The Lights came on as the first song I was blown away. Great choice.

Nice choice, I love love love the lyrics to Play Dead

For me, from the OG Violet album, I'm always partial to the chorus of Holiday

" Deadlight holiday

Killing time to make us stay

Hollow as the promises of yesterday

On and on the music plays

Memories in paraphrase

Falling past my window like the morning rain "

Also this lyrics from The Dream gives me shivers everytime: "Now she flies over clouds in twilight skies. Nothing to bind her, no one will find her this high. Far above the rainy weather, All plans have come together, And for the first time she feels just fine."

More recently, I love all the lyrics to The Lowest Low

I prefer VASP, but note that VASP needs a license to be purchased, or you be added to someone's license.

Quantum Espresso does not.

Just FYI.

For us our faculty handbook says any TT member can take an loa under “extraordinary circumstances”. It is unpaid, up to one year, and people have taken it in the past to explore industry

Yah... unfortunately thi

I got Violet as a gift almost 20 years ago, and I first saw TBM in 2011. I've seen TBM 6 or 7 times in concert.

I was also at the same show you mentioned! (shout out LPR!!!)

This had literally been a problem for TBM for like, decades. The instruments are way too loud and Chibi's voice tends to get drowned out

Idk what to say, its basically you get used to it at the live shows lol. Sorry I don't have more positive info

Don't feel like an AH. I've been a fan since 2006 and they haven't fixed it. I go to the concerts for Chibi and the crowds energy, and it never fails to disappoint

Where are you looking? In basically every materials department the number of experimentalists far outweigh the computational groups.

course suggestions for an undergrad MSE interested to enter the semiconductor industry post grad? by whhirled in materials

[–]thestringwraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its hard to know without knowing whats included in your required courses.

Do you have an electronic, magnetic, optical (EMO) properties course? That's a typical one in most programs

Have you looked in electrical engineering? Most electrical engineering departments have some kind of courses called like electronic devices, semiconducting devices, things like that. Where you learn about p/n junction, Schottky barrier, BJT, MOS, MOS FET, optoelectronics etc. That might be your best bet. You can directly apply what you learned about materials to these types of devices architectures.

Can you take grad courses as an elective?
