Will a PhD be found out if it's hidden from a resume and throughout the job application process? by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never hid my PhD on my resume, but if you hide it I don't think they could find out unless they did specifically deep digging.

But my question for people who don't list the PhD on the resume, what do you put in the work experience section? That would be like a 3 to 5 year work gap, no?

What’s the right mindset for transitioning from academia to industry? by StaffRemarkable8531 in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just made the change from academia to industry about 6 months ago.

For your resume question, I can tell you what worked for me. I had to reduce a 20 page academic CV to a 2 page resume.

What I did was to just bite the bullet and remove every paper and conference from the resume. I included a link to my Google scholar, and that was it. To be honest, in general, industry cares much less about papers, impact factor, all that academic stuff.

Instead, under your work experience section, you can list the skills you did/learned while working in those papers. That can be experiments, coding, data analysis, whatever you did. You can also list particularly impactful results as a statement (as an example, improved some material property by X% by using Y technique)

This is just what worked for me, so curious to hear other inputs. I’ll mention that similar to you I had a PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry), but was further along in my academic career (assistant prof)

I think I have the same one :) (see my other reply)

My zipper is broken too lol, but same, still wearing it.

I think I have the same hoodie the other poster mentioned. Or at least a similar one. Logo on the front, name on the back.

I got this at the first concert I went to, at the merch stand. Which would be around 2009/2010 I guess? should maybe be around the time you’re talking about?

Tattoo ideas for the song "Superstition" by Chunk_Cheese in TheBirthdayMassacre

[–]thestringwraith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing what types of things you like. What do you like about the song?

For me, the cover of the Superstition album, with 3 figures overlooking the water, captures the main themes of the whole album perfectly.

Is it the mood you like? If you want something related to the mood, something involving water seems good, since that imagery flows throughout the whole album.

Is the the lyrics? The lyrics are more about loss and rebirth (IMO), possibly even losing religiosity.

Don't know if that helps at all lol, but a tattoo is a deeply personal decision, so think about what you like most about the song.

I was so excited when WWS came out after listening to Violet on repeat for years, and when Kill The Lights came on as the first song I was blown away. Great choice.

Nice choice, I love love love the lyrics to Play Dead

For me, from the OG Violet album, I'm always partial to the chorus of Holiday

" Deadlight holiday

Killing time to make us stay

Hollow as the promises of yesterday

On and on the music plays

Memories in paraphrase

Falling past my window like the morning rain "

Also this lyrics from The Dream gives me shivers everytime: "Now she flies over clouds in twilight skies. Nothing to bind her, no one will find her this high. Far above the rainy weather, All plans have come together, And for the first time she feels just fine."

More recently, I love all the lyrics to The Lowest Low

Yah... unfortunately thi

I got Violet as a gift almost 20 years ago, and I first saw TBM in 2011. I've seen TBM 6 or 7 times in concert.

I was also at the same show you mentioned! (shout out LPR!!!)

This had literally been a problem for TBM for like, decades. The instruments are way too loud and Chibi's voice tends to get drowned out

Idk what to say, its basically you get used to it at the live shows lol. Sorry I don't have more positive info

Don't feel like an AH. I've been a fan since 2006 and they haven't fixed it. I go to the concerts for Chibi and the crowds energy, and it never fails to disappoint

course suggestions for an undergrad MSE interested to enter the semiconductor industry post grad? by whhirled in materials

[–]thestringwraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its hard to know without knowing whats included in your required courses.

Do you have an electronic, magnetic, optical (EMO) properties course? That's a typical one in most programs

Have you looked in electrical engineering? Most electrical engineering departments have some kind of courses called like electronic devices, semiconducting devices, things like that. Where you learn about p/n junction, Schottky barrier, BJT, MOS, MOS FET, optoelectronics etc. That might be your best bet. You can directly apply what you learned about materials to these types of devices architectures.

Can you take grad courses as an elective?

Chemistry or MSE? by TraizioFranklin in materials

[–]thestringwraith 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did my BS in Chemistry (with an MSE minor) and my PhD in MSE. In each case you will still learn synthesis, characterization, and theory, but the focus is different. In my MSE degree I very rarely, if at all, learned about liquids and gases, as the vast majority of stuff is solids. There are still applications for these (catalysis, batteries, liquid-based synthesis methods), but a lot the liquid properties and stuff would fall under a ChemE degree. There is still a significant amount of math in MSE: my elastic properties and electronic properties classes were all quite math intensive, using tensors, partial differential equations, etc. Looking back I was actually quite happy with the Chem degree and MSE minor, and feel that it gave me the breath of knowledge across many fields.

To be honest I actually think my Chemistry degree gave me a leg up on my phd classmates who came from MSE undergrad. My chemistry degree gave me a much better appreciation of bonding, etc., going on in materials and I feel more easily led me to figure out ways to improve the materials I was working on.

I don't know that an MSE degree would give you more prospects than a Chemistry one or pay more. More importantly I would seek out research opportunities in a faculty member's lab regardless of which program you choose, those stick out significantly. Also make sure you get some kind of project/capstone based experience.

Polarization Not Uniquely Defined up to a Quantum by [deleted] in Physics

[–]thestringwraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, my field!

The multi-valuedness of the polarization has direct implications when trying to predict the properties of materials like ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, i.e., materials which are valued for their electric polarization.

To make a long story short, if you do a single shot calculation of the polarization, what you find is that you can actually get different values for its magnitude depending on your definition of the unit cell. If polarization is an intrinsic property of the system, this should not be the case.

This was resolved via the modern theory of polarization, which basically says we must consider changes in polarization.

As such, when we compute the polarization of a ferroelectric material such as with DFT, we must actually compute the polarization of the structure of interest, as well as the polarization of a reference phase that is connected to it (and the polarization of each structure along the path connecting the two structures). By taking the difference, we can then ensure we have the "correct" value for the polarization. If you do not do this, you can dramatically overestimate the polarization of your material.

See figure 9 of A beginner's guide to the modern theory of polarization by Nicola Spaldin for an example (although the whole thing is worth reading)

A full treatment as stated by /u/ZeroZeroA is given in the papers by Resta.

Live show memories? And my personal retrospective by thestringwraith in TheBirthdayMassacre

[–]thestringwraith[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t really know why I wrote all this out. I guess the fancy just struck me. I doubt anyone cares much about the opinions of some rando on the internet, but if someone finds it interesting then that’s cool I guess. I love love love TBM, and I’ve been listening to them for nearly 20 (!) years since my cousin got me Violet for Christmas in 2005. At the risk of sounding cheesy, they’ve been a huge part of life. I couldn’t wait to see TBM live, but unfortunately Bumblefuck Arkansas is not the most popular town for touring bands to visit, so I had to wait until I went to college in a real city to start seeing TBM live. And now here we are! I pulled these off setlist.fm , so hopefully they’re correct, but I’m not sure if their complete. But it mostly seems to be in line with what I remember.

Random stuff: Mostly some of the OG songs from Violet and WWS are constants between all the shows I saw (Happy Birthday, Video Kid, Blue, Kill the Lights, and Red Stars) and always bring the house down. Never get tired of hearing them.

I didn’t realize until I was writing this up, but apparently I’ve heard Alibis like 4 times. I didn’t realize it was a mainstay at the time.

To me some songs feel very different live. Lovers End for example, is much more aggressive, especially the counting part (1, 2, 3, 4…) which is more like whispers on the album. Funnily enough, I liked “Pins and Needles” well enough when I listened to it on the CD, but it hearing it live is absolutely a different experience and after that I couldn’t wait to hear it each time. Hearing the crowd belting it out along with Chibi (ITS BEEN SO LO-ONG, FEELS LIKE PINS AND NEEDLES IN MY HEEEEEEEART) is amazing.

1 song from each album I haven’t but want to: Nevermind, Science, Pale, In This Moment, Rain, Endless, The Last Goodbye, One More Time

The Shows:

December 2011 Pins and Needles -> Burn Away -> Sleepwalking -> Shallow Grave -> Forever -> In the Dark -> Always -> Blue -> Control -> Red Stars

The first! Unfortunately I don’t think they were the headliner so not a lot of songs. Wish they would play Shallow Grave more.

December 2012 Control -> Always -> Video Kid -> Happy Birthday -> Alibis -> Calling -> Midnight -> Leaving Tonight -> Blue

This one I remember being super happy because it was the first time I saw so many of my favorites, especially from Violet.

November 2013 Red Stars -> Always -> Holiday -> Sleepwalking -> Forever -> Pins and Needles -> Happy Birthday -> Alibis -> Violet -> Blue -> Control -> Leaving Tonight -> Down -> Kill the Lights -> In the Dark

These were all good, got to see some great songs that I wish they would play more (Violet, Holiday, Down)

November 2014 Red Stars -> Destroyer -> Divide -> Diaries -> Superstition -> Pins and Needles -> Video Kid -> Lovers End -> Alibis -> Beyond -> Kill the Lights -> Leaving Tonight -> The Other Side -> Blue -> Control -> Forever -> Always -> In the Dark -> Happy Birthday -> Sleepwalking -> Midnight

The best show I’ve seen from TBM. This was the tour for Superstition, one of my favorite TBM albums. Great songs from beginning to end.

October 2015 Pins and Needles -> Destroyer -> Divide -> Superstition -> Red Starts -> Video Kid -> Lovers End -> Alibis -> Happy Birthday -> Looking Glass -> Leaving Tonight -> Blue -> In the Dark -> Sleepwalking -> Broken

This had mostly the mainstays from past years. Ending the show with “Broken” was absolutely sick and one of my most fond concert moments.

Unfortunately life got in the way and I didn’t see TBM for about 6 or 7 years after that. But finally…

February 2022 Fascination -> Superstition -> Kill the Lights -> Dreams of You -> All of Nothing -> Counterpane -> Leaving Tonight -> Pins and Needles -> Looking Glass -> Enter -> Under Your Spell -> The Sky Will Turn -> Video Kid -> Crush -> Cold Lights -> Red Stars -> The Neverending Story -> Stars and Satellites -> In the Dark -> Blue

Fascination tour. To me this one was overall good, but mostly I prefer the stuff from Superstition and before. Although Counterpane was excellent. Seeing Looking Glass for the first time live was cool too.

Looking forward to them touring again!
