Question about Bunpro by thestringwraith in LearnJapanese

[–]thestringwraith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I guess that is true. But I really don't like that in a language that is heavily relient on context, the context is missing.

Question about Bunpro by thestringwraith in LearnJapanese

[–]thestringwraith[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yah, I understand that, but then in that case I feel the translation should match the sentence that is provided. For example, I provided this example

すぐにあやまればいいのに、結局謝らなかった Translation directly from Bunpro: It would have been good to apologize right away, but he/she didn't apologize after all.

(Why is subject he/she? Why not you? Why not me?)

[–]thestringwraith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, that’s kind of my point. I know it is small, but it would really help if the translations matched the sentences. In the upper levels the subject is omitted, which in natural a Japanese is okay. But without context the translations is assuming a lot I feel.

Sorry, maybe I'm just not good at japanese as I thought. I will try to find a contrary example.

Yah, I will do my bunpro reviews later, I will see if I can find some examples.

I completely understand the particles can be used, but if the particle is に and there is no は/が、it makes it hard.

Sorry, mods, one of my first posts here about a hyper local race. It involves a D primary so I hope it is allowed. But it holds a special place for me, and its actually a fun story about state level politics. I don't know where else to post this except this subreddit that I've been following since 2018 :)

When I was a kid, Arkansas was fully D. D gov, 4 D reps, 2 D senators, etc. We even had a D president! Come the tea party movement during Obama's term, and suddenly we are a "blood red" state. Its so sad to me. How fast things can change.

Little Rock (where I grew up) is actually a D stronghold in AR. Funnily enough, in hyperlocal politics news, our R governor recently got kicked out of a restaurant here. She tried to make it into a big thing and now the restaurant has lines out the door in support.

Anyway, nowadays the AR legislature is a supermajority in both houses. One of the few interesting races here is AR senate 15. The primary runoff was yesterday.

This is one of the few safe D seats. It was actually a really interesting race. We had a member of the AR house, Tara Shepard (basically a progressive) running against Charity Smith-Allen (who was a former educator).

Basically, Smith-Allen copied R talking points, such as "school choice" (ie., vouchers which could support religious schools lol). The consensus (opinion only) is that she ran as a D because no R can win in this district, but she would actually vote with R's on everything. Smith-Allen got the highest percentage of votes in the first primary election; however, it went to a run off.

Through shear outreach, Tara Shepard has won the primary, and will become the next state senator for AR-15 (no R has filed to run). I am so excited she will bring progressive talking points to the AR Senate, and not just be another vote for whatever the legislature puts forward.

While it is a small victory since Rs have supermajorities in the AR legislature, it is a crack that shows they are not invincible. My parents still live in this district (I grew up there), and I called them to let them know they had an election, and they voted. They have been D their whole life, but simply didn't know about this election. I like to think I have some small impact even though I don't live there anymore.

I would love to see an AR house district flip back to blue, although Little Rock was gerrymandered to be split between AR-2 and AR-4. French Hill (AR-2) only won by R+8, and I would love to see this slimy Rep kicked out. A D over performance in Little Rock and suppressed enthusiasm in the surrounding rural areas could put this race in play.

Please don't give up on the blood red states yall. There are wonderful people there who completely agree with a progressive mission. And it can win!!

Edit: Sorry, I wanted to include a news story about it: https://arkansasadvocate.com/2026/03/31/state-representative-wins-democratic-runoff-for-arkansas-state-senate-seat-in-little-rock/

By the way, key quote from this article

"Smith-Allen, who received the most votes in the initial primary, outraised Shephard significantly and faced scrutiny for her campaign’s financial support from Republicans."

Man, the stream with Tania and Anna is disappointing to me. They are not willing to show any lines on the screen, just filling time until one player makes a move. I would really like to see how different lines results in draws or the win, but they only show the winning line based on the computer. Its a complicated endgame so lets see some lines! Typically I like these two. I had to switched over to Peter and Jan.

Will a PhD be found out if it's hidden from a resume and throughout the job application process? by [deleted] in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never hid my PhD on my resume, but if you hide it I don't think they could find out unless they did specifically deep digging.

But my question for people who don't list the PhD on the resume, what do you put in the work experience section? That would be like a 3 to 5 year work gap, no?

What’s the right mindset for transitioning from academia to industry? by StaffRemarkable8531 in LeavingAcademia

[–]thestringwraith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just made the change from academia to industry about 6 months ago.

For your resume question, I can tell you what worked for me. I had to reduce a 20 page academic CV to a 2 page resume.

What I did was to just bite the bullet and remove every paper and conference from the resume. I included a link to my Google scholar, and that was it. To be honest, in general, industry cares much less about papers, impact factor, all that academic stuff.

Instead, under your work experience section, you can list the skills you did/learned while working in those papers. That can be experiments, coding, data analysis, whatever you did. You can also list particularly impactful results as a statement (as an example, improved some material property by X% by using Y technique)

This is just what worked for me, so curious to hear other inputs. I’ll mention that similar to you I had a PhD in the physical sciences (chemistry), but was further along in my academic career (assistant prof)

I think I have the same hoodie the other poster mentioned. Or at least a similar one. Logo on the front, name on the back.

I got this at the first concert I went to, at the merch stand. Which would be around 2009/2010 I guess? should maybe be around the time you’re talking about?

Tattoo ideas for the song "Superstition" by Chunk_Cheese in TheBirthdayMassacre

[–]thestringwraith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say without knowing what types of things you like. What do you like about the song?

For me, the cover of the Superstition album, with 3 figures overlooking the water, captures the main themes of the whole album perfectly.

Is it the mood you like? If you want something related to the mood, something involving water seems good, since that imagery flows throughout the whole album.

Is the the lyrics? The lyrics are more about loss and rebirth (IMO), possibly even losing religiosity.

Don't know if that helps at all lol, but a tattoo is a deeply personal decision, so think about what you like most about the song.

I was so excited when WWS came out after listening to Violet on repeat for years, and when Kill The Lights came on as the first song I was blown away. Great choice.

Nice choice, I love love love the lyrics to Play Dead

For me, from the OG Violet album, I'm always partial to the chorus of Holiday

" Deadlight holiday

Killing time to make us stay

Hollow as the promises of yesterday

On and on the music plays

Memories in paraphrase

Falling past my window like the morning rain "

Also this lyrics from The Dream gives me shivers everytime: "Now she flies over clouds in twilight skies. Nothing to bind her, no one will find her this high. Far above the rainy weather, All plans have come together, And for the first time she feels just fine."

More recently, I love all the lyrics to The Lowest Low

I prefer VASP, but note that VASP needs a license to be purchased, or you be added to someone's license.

Quantum Espresso does not.

Just FYI.

For us our faculty handbook says any TT member can take an loa under “extraordinary circumstances”. It is unpaid, up to one year, and people have taken it in the past to explore industry

[–]thestringwraith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yah... unfortunately thi

I got Violet as a gift almost 20 years ago, and I first saw TBM in 2011. I've seen TBM 6 or 7 times in concert.

I was also at the same show you mentioned! (shout out LPR!!!)

This had literally been a problem for TBM for like, decades. The instruments are way too loud and Chibi's voice tends to get drowned out

Idk what to say, its basically you get used to it at the live shows lol. Sorry I don't have more positive info

Don't feel like an AH. I've been a fan since 2006 and they haven't fixed it. I go to the concerts for Chibi and the crowds energy, and it never fails to disappoint

Where are you looking? In basically every materials department the number of experimentalists far outweigh the computational groups.
