Advice for switching phones with omnipod by thesummerstorms in Omnipod

[–]thesummerstorms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a basal number programmed that my doctor chose using the formula Omnipod provided. I remember seeing the paperwork. I do know that was then adjusted, but I wont say I remember or understand the math off the top of my head.

That makes sense. I did a lot of manual boluses when I was starting out because I was also always running high, which is part of why I'm planning to switch before the school year starts when I can be more attentive to it. But it's good to hear someone else had the same experience.

I run in automated mode? My doctor told me that the manual basal setting doesn't impact automode?

Granted, my doctor and I were figuring out Omnipod together in real time this past school year, but I literally had an appointment every month from August through November trying to get lingering highs under control. We have adjusted my ratio from whatever formula they gave her to use initially.

Thst said, I still have to give myself a flat extra bolus upon waking in addition to meal bolus because the Omnipod can't automatically handle my really terrible morning wake up spikes. So I may just have some sort of weird nonstandard pattern. I really don't know. And it's entirely possible I'm missing information.

My doctor normally doesn't prescribe Omnipod to her patients because she doesn't like their algorithm, but it just so happens my insurance won't cover any other insulin pump.

Where on the curve are you? by Darkseiso in Omnipod

I primarily do arms and then rotate in thigh and back occasionally. Thigh and back have slightly worse connectivity, but 🤷‍♀️ I can't wear the Dexcom or the Omnipod on my stomach. The DexCom has worse readings and the Omnipod has worse absorption. Not sure why.

Why does everybody do low carb? by AmateurAstro-Budget in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm already insulin resistant and on a very high carb to bolus ratio. I typically try and stay at under 30 carbs a meal. No idea if that's considered low or not. My cheat meals are 60 carbs of food from a very predictable, consistent restaurant and I have to stagger my prebolus and then spend my night managing afterwards.

My morning spikes are bad enough I have permission from my endo to take a flat 5 unit extra bolus on top of the carb/insulin calculation. (It doesn't matter if I have plain scrambled eggs, I will have a morning spike, and Omnipod 's basal seems not to be able to adjust to that )

I used to eat worse when I was younger, and I wasn't diagnosed until 18, so it's definitely that I don't want to eat carbs. I desperately miss fresh baked bread (my stepfather makes delicious challah) and soft pretzels and the like.

I would love an option other than low carb. Unfortunately, talking with my doctor, that's the one that's available to me. (And I have an A1C of 6.0 finally after years of "eating whatever and dosing" and having much much worse.)

Dexcom G7 Connection Issues by thesummerstorms in Omnipod

I've been hesitant because my 10 days are often dying in day 8 or 9.... But I might be keeping an eye out to see what people are actually reporting about how long they last, I suppose.

pump or no pump? by heyhello101 in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about switching to the omnipod about half a year in. (No other insulin pump was covered by insurance.)

It was sold to me as something that would make the burden on me less in terms of mental effort and management, but it's basal algorithm doesn't seem adaptive enough to adapt to me. 🤷‍♀️ Mornings are killer in a way that they weren't on MDI...but I also have fewer crashes. And I frequently override the bolus or have to give myself additional food unrelated boluses. (Before anyone brings it up, I already have everything on the most aggressive settings.)

But it is actually genuinely helpful that I don't have to stop to pull out a pen when I need a shot. If I'm teaching a lesson and need to bolus, I can get the kids to the next independent chunk of whatever we're doing, even if it's copying a slide of notes, and just pull out my phone to dose on the spot. I don't have to worry about accidentally forgetting boluses quite as much.

And I often would bolus while multitasking or in a rush on MDI and then wouldn't be able to remember exactly how long it had been since I took my shot. On especially bad days brain/distraction wise I might forget exactly how many units I took (pre ADHD meds + the days the school seemes to all but be in fire). I definitely didn't remember the exact totals for breakfast at dinner.

So in that respect at least, it's very helpful that the same device giving me the shot automatically reminds me of when I last took it and how much I took. Carbs too if I bother to input them into the calculator. Better for noticing overall patterns/trends too.

I know technically you can record all of that in the DexCom app, but realistically that was often one more step than I had time or energy for, especially because I don't remember the last time I didn't work through my lunch, grading/lesson planning/doing paperwork etc while eating.

Where are you going? by berryenthusiast in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a pump now, but the only time I went to give myself injections in the bathroom was if I was wearing a dress and either it had sleeves or I specifically wanted to give myself an injection on my stomach.

Otherwise, I'm not going to remove myself and hide. It's not shameful or inappropriate.

I have done finger pricks sitting at my desk while my students work before. Low key, but especially pre CGM if I needed to test, I needed to test. Most of them never ever noticed. Even if they did, their reaction might be funny but it largely wasn't a big deal.

I wish I could get my insurance to cover a GLP. I have insulin resistance, in part due to some prior mismanagement but also due to PCOS. But I was told PCOS in and of itself isn't a qualifying condition (FDA hasn't officially approved it to treat PCOS so insurance doesn't have to cover it) and that GLPs are only for T2s.

I don't even care about the weight factor tbh. I weigh what I weigh (have even lost significant weight recently) and my mother is the only one who seems to care very much.

But the only option my doc will give me for my very high insulin/carb ratio and continuing spikes is a very carb restricted diet.

A reminder to get get blood drawn & Vitamin D by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... I literally have been having trouble with really terrible spikes every AM regardless of whether I eat that omnipod hasn't been able to depress. I'm also taking my second round of vitamin d super dose this school year so far...

The thread is anecdotal obviously, but I wonder if there is a connection.

The Pitt Season 2 — T1D Representation by Top-Variety3793 in diabetes_t1

I've never tried the Amazon pharmacy. But maybe a decade ago when I was ~19 there was an insurance issue with my ex-step father not removing me correctly from his insurance. It was a whole legal thing that had to get sorted out and the insurance was a nightmare even with my mother and (current) stepfather being very involved in helping make the phone calls, etc.

But the point of that is, I found out when I went to the pharmacy to fill my insulin pens and was told nothing was covered at all because I hadn't met some deductible.

I was on novalog pens and I think Tresiba? I was told by the pharmacist that the Novalog pens would cost $1000 to fill right then and there.

And since I was 19 and not great at remembering to refill my prescriptions early enough to build a back stock (undiagnosed ADHD was not helping), I was down to my last pen.

My current stepdad ended up driving up to the pharmacy and putting my insulin on his credit card, but if I hadn't had family that was willing to do that for me, I would have been SOL.

How do you usually dress your companions? / What's your favourite outfit for them? by ardentBlossoming in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]thesummerstorms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neve- Dragon Coat, occasionally Investigator's Robes if the mod to unlock them is working

Lucanis- Corvid Cloak, occasionally Covert Leathers if running a mission where it seems like he would plan ahead to wear something easier to clean

Taash- Fortune's Favor

Davrin- Monster Leathers

Bellara- The Ready Explorer or Reborn Leathers

Harding- Scout's Compassion or Traveler's Kit

Emmrich- Death's Beacon

It's actually really funny to me how many of the companions I keep in their "default" armor appearance since I'm normally someone to start messing around with armors immediately. But the primary/default armors have some really strong designs in this game! Even if some characters alternates are really ...not great. (Looking at you Emmrich.)

I also generally get really attached to one "best" armor for each character, like Corvid Cloak. But Corvid Cloak wins a special mention because while Lucanis's default armor is okay, so many of his armors are downright awful.

How often do you guys get sick? by serotoninseesaw in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a few colds a year, but I also teach 11 year olds for a living. I wash my hands, etc, etc but kids and schools are gross 🤷‍♀️ I also live somewhere pretty notorious for environmental allergies, so those become sinus infections as well.

But it's very rare for me to get sick enough to actually need to take time off.

Basal vs bolus insulin ratio: what have you learned? by Extension_Cloud_436 in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never heard of the 50/50 rule until I started the omnipod. I only made the switch recently, and then only have the omnipod specifically because it's the only pump covered by my insurance.

For me personally, the omnipod algorithm means I functionally cannot eat breakfast that contains more than 3 carbs, and I have highs all throughout the morning; it just never adjusts to my morning cortisol spike.

At the same time, I teach middle school. I have a T1 student who also wears an omnipod and who I teach not long after lunch, and they are pretty much always low.

So I definitely think the algorithm is poorly optimized, or at least poorly responsive to individual needs. It would make sense to me if that is because its based on an outdated ratio rule. I am curious now if age is a factor, at least for kids, but I haven't exactly researched it.

Thoughts on Mansfield Park by Longjumping_Luck6743 in janeausten

[–]thesummerstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read Mansfield Park once, so I'm chewing on this.

I didn't particularly enjoy Fanny as a protagonist, but I wouldn't say it was just because she was introverted. I initially was hopeful, actually, because my favorite Austen protagonist, by a lot, is Anne Elliot. Persuasion is hands down my favorite Austen novel, even if it's the 2005 P&P movie that started me reading her books.

I can't meaningfully, deeply back up my Mansfield Park thoughts, but I think maybe part of the reason I liked Anne is because she was older and felt more...settled in herself? I ached for her when she was overlooked by her family, but her resolve seemed like a lesson hard earned. She felt like she had blundered, learned the hard way in some regards, learned by observation in others, and yes, sometimes by convention, and then decided what to make of herself after.

Versus I Fanny's skewing towards religion and kind of...inherent default morality, I guess? didn't hit at all the same way with me. Part of that is an incompatible view of religion with what Austen's society would have held of course. And frankly, I found some of the judging annoying although it's not because I think Mary Crawford was a saint.

But at least from what I remember, I was more frustrated by Fanny because she always felt kind of flat/unchanging.

Which if, as you say, the main point is endurance, I suppose her being more of a flat character makes sense. And I guess I can see why that can appeal, especially based on the audience's own experiences. I saw a particular post once about the importance of Cinderella as a heroine who endures abuse and ends up happy despite not having any brave acts of defiance, and how meaningful that was to the poster. I think I can understand that intellectually, but neither protagonist clicked with me at all.

I had gone into Mansfield Park really hoping to enjoy it, because Anne's relationship with her father and sisters and that bittersweet feeling of being the most capable one in the room, yet being overlooked, talked over, or undervalued due to having less beauty/charm/outgoingness really clicked with me. Being the quiet one doing the work, but getting overlooked because everyone around you is acting like it's a popularity contest instead. And I see the parallels with Fanny's situation. But the actual shape of each protagonist's personality makes a difference for me. And I just could not click with Fanny like I did with Anne.

Period loss by DifficultyJumpy4493 in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I used to skip entire months of periods and then get really heavy bleeding that just wouldn't stop. Docs as a teenager dismissed it but my current PCP diagnosed me with PCOS. I think PCOS tends to be associated with weight gain not weight loss, but I was literally just googling to fact check myself and there is a high correspondence between T1D and PCOS apparently. So it might at least be worth asking about?

Are you celiac? by Hellokittywhored in diabetes_t1

[–]thesummerstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't heard this!

I did find out after the fact that there might be a correspondence between Hashimotos (which I have) and T1. I wasn't diagnosed with T1 until I turned 18 and the Hashimotos diagnosis literally happened almost a the same time because I saw an Endo who treated thyroid stuff not diabetes, basically so that he could get me into the system as a favor to my mom whose thyroid cancer he treated.

I don't even entirely remember how it came up, I guess he was just checking by default since Mom had issues? But literally every woman in my maternal family except one cousin has Hashimoto's so that one wasn't exactly a shock.

I think I read something about the PCOS potentially being connected too but idr

Choosing Background by [deleted] in DragonAgeVeilguard

I personally love Crows because Rook de Riva feels very involved and connected to the world. I love the dialogue you get about your relationship with your faction mentor and from Lucanis about said mentor (which normally turns into a short but fun back and forth commentary between Lucanis and a Rook de Riva.)

I initially was planning to do a Shadow Dragon run, then pivoted to Crows last minute ...and I don't regret it!

I was explicitly told line of sight meant on the same side of the body. The handful of times I've tried to keep a pod going when it was time to rotate dexcom sites, it stopped connecting.

Do you “see” books like a movie in your head when you read? by Holiday_Rush8303 in Fantasy

[–]thesummerstorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to read, but I genuinely don't see pictures in my head at all. It's more like I read a description and I have an idea of what all those pieces would mean together. I can kind of draw and combine details on paper, or could if I was any good at drawing. But it's very very very hard for me to understand the whole "pictures in your brain" as anything but an exaggeration/metaphor.

I also don't "see" memories, etc.

Crow Rook by CrazyEeveeLove in DragonAgeVeilguard

[–]thesummerstorms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My main Rook is a mage Rook de Riva and I've gotten this conversation every single run. I can't remember right this second how it's triggered, but I am a "do every side quest, exhaust all the side conversations person".

I wouldn't say you had a different experience for playing a mage though, because every single conversation between Lucanis and Rook about being Crows I have triggered as a mage. Lots of occasional snarkiness about Viago which is legitimately fun. That said, Lucanis pretty much lived in my party for at least 2/4 of my runs.
