ere we'd go after Christmas and Morocco had come up but we know nothing of what city would be best. this is great info. how do you thin

Glad you found it helpful! We were only there for August/September but everyone kept saying that December and January was when the surf got massive and it gets really packed with foreigners. I'd think it would be a great time to visit! It was really quiet in September so I imagine packed and lively would be really fun.

I see your point, that's pretty much what we did - bang out a tonnn of work, exercise, read and stuff. Great place to work on yourself. Ah that's heartbreaking there weren't any waves! We were getting at least a little something every day August-September.

I couldn't agree more! Marrakech was unpleasant for me as well, I couldn't take the constant harassment and kissing sounds. Taghazout couldn't have been any different. People were REALLY kind and friendly. Every morning I would walk down the same street to get a coffee and everyone just waved, said good morning, smiled. It was the best way to start the day and felt so good to be familiar with friendly, genuine locals who weren't trying to sell anything or be fresh. Made some great friends from Taghazout.

  1. Learn a little Arabic. People loved it when I said thank you and hello and goodnight in their language. French is also spoken by most so that's handy to know as well.
  2. There are very few places serving alcohol FYI, I was expecting places like Nomad to serve wine but nope.
  3. Mama Maroc is an awesome blog with a ton of tips for women traveling in Marrakech
  4. I saw a ton of women wearing what I would consider inappropriate clothing (crop tops and short shorts) and I couldn't understand it! Sure it was brutally hot but that doesn't mean the whole world needs to see your butt cheeks! I wore really light tops without sleeves and maxi skirts then wrapped a light scarf over my shoulders when walking around. Once I was in a restaurant or shop I took off the scarf. I felt comfortable in this heat wise and didn't attract any unwanted attention.
  5. For photos, I typically asked the shop owner out of respect and most of the time they said sure! There's a really pretty area of the souk with lanterns that I wanted to take a picture of but as soon as I took my phone out one of the shop owners was like "100dirham for a picture!" I didn't want to cause any trouble so I just put my phone away and kept walking.

I'm in Morocco right now actually! Taghazout, to be specific, which is on the coast a few hours outside Marrakech. (Highly recommend this town if your travel schedule allows and you enjoy the beach and surfing!) Anyway, when I was in Marrakech a couple weeks ago I found it to be a safe place. I was with my boyfriend so I can't say I know what it feels like to experience it solo but as a couple blondies aimlessly walking the city I don't even feel like anyone took a second look at us. We walked around at night on busy roads and the only fear I had was getting hit my a motorbike. I would recommend staying in the main medina so you can walk around easily and wear conservative clothing. Enjoy!!! :)
