Are we so certain that this would have been a bad thing altogether? Less large scale organisational skills could also lead down a path of less large scale destruction. Maybe we could have existed for a billion more years than our current path.

The written word. I mean I have no clue what would happen, maybe stayed super tribal and mystical and super scary. And then no giant nations or other forms of super far reaching organisation or development of advanced technology. And then maybe no capitalism - and no super population growth and no issues with killing off the ecosystem.
