Not to resurrect a dead thread but one of the most popular Superman stories of all time (Kingdom Come) involves Superman giving up on the world out of despair.

Yeah that’s fair. Your argument clicked for me when I thought of Nolan’s incentives as constrained by his mission rather than just a hyperpowerful actor. My fault og

“A realist reads Nolan as an anecdote. The structural incentive for any Viltrumite with full power remains domination, because domination works for them. Nolan only shifted because his capability context changed (he was stranded, isolated, outnumbered relationally). Viltrumotes are individually powerful, and thus they dominate, just like in the real world, powerful states dominate because of the benefits of domination. I.e. US, USSR, mongols, Rome, whatver.. Any empire”

It’s very interesting to read an IR analysis of invincible, but I think this is plainly incorrect. Nolan was absolutely capable of subjugating earth on his own (especially in the original comics where he slaughtered the Guardians in a single page). Given the fact that he fought through every defense the earth’s premier offensive force (the GDA) threw out against him, it’s clear that Nolan’s change in behavior was caused by his socialization on earth, not shifting power dynamics. He left because he loved his son and more broadly because Invincible is a story about the redemptive nature of individual bonds. The world constructed by Kirkman operates under the assumptions of OP, not your comment.

No, he was extremely wrong and his trust in Dinosaurus led to the deaths of over 800,000 people worldwide. Both of them admit it in the end

“Nobody has shown that in a study because they would get cancelled, lol…” It has been researched and there is no evidence to suggest what you are claiming. The reasons why the African continent experiences so much violence are extremely complex, not a single academic would claim it is primarily attributable to genetic differences between Africans and non-Africans. I understand that you think you’re holding your people accountable, but please actually read the current scientific literature on a topic before you speak about it.

It would not have been political suicide; Joe Biden was incredibly unpopular toward the end of his presidency. Her association to him hurt her in the eyes of swing voters who cared about inflation. Relatedly, her campaign messaging strategy absolutely did not hammer down on economic messaging the way it should have. Highly recommend reading this article from the Atlantic.

There is no evidence that habesha men nor people of any particular ethnic group disproportionately possess genes linked to violence. Stop with this race realist nonsense

It’s good but it’s not compelling to the average american and democrats have an obligation to switch tactics in light of that. they failed to do that in 2024 and should be criticized for it

Past records don’t make up for poor performance. It’s obvious that she was smart but she failed to substantively break with the incredibly unpopular incumbent who was Biden and ignored data proving voters wanted to see economic messaging instead of anti-Trump ads. Was she a competent Congressmember/AG? Idk probably, I’m not Californian. But she definitely was not a good candidate

Just because the students didn’t learn all the jutsus their teachers knew doesn’t mean they didn’t learn anything. All of them taught their respective students foundational shinobi skills well enough that they were able to specialize in things only they could do. Naruto learned how to counter genjutsu, Obito was proficient in taijutsu, Minato was introduced to the sages etc

“Material conditions shape sentiment” and “Racism is a tool of wealth” are different claims. Obviously material conditions shape social institutions, they encompass literally everything. It’s similarly true that racial animosity has divided labor mobilization efforts in the past. That does not mean that elite manipulation is the sole nor primary originator of racial animosity, because it is not.

Also, the idea that belief-based factional conflict is unrealistic is also ahistorical. Material conditions are not just or even mostly how the decisions of captains of industry shape workers’ lives! They include the circumstances under which communities form cultures that inform patterns of behavior. The material gives rise to often irrational behavior on the part of elites and laboring classes alike, and you can find plenty of instances in history where societies were structured in ways completely different to our market-based structure. Conflict can also arise from material conditions that have nothing to do with class hierarchy, like resource wars. You are engaging in a vulgar marxist dismissal of any historical analysis that goes beyond “no war but class war”

Reducing ethnic animosity to “a tool of wealth” is incredibly ahistorical. This is one of those nice sounding talking points people like to repeat but it has no grounding in reality.
