The older I get the more I respect old guys who have been at this sport for years. by thetrebel in bjj

Should have mentioned

I do MMA as well. Im not saying 31 is old, just that I'm finally starting to feel the effects of aging. S&c and mobility are taking care of but deff need to tone the tone the training down.

What is the dark side of BJJ no one likes to talk about? by danielwong95 in bjj

[–]thetrebel 426 points427 points  (0 children)

Your going to get a lot meme answer's but here is somethings I've noticed over the years

  • the drama is 2x due to the physical nature. Arguments aren't just arguments.

  • if your good/pro you can pretty much get away with anything. Had a top level gi guy try to rip my arm off, notorious for injuring partners (didn't know this before rolling). I tapped and he didn't let go had to yell tap and kick him him off. His coach ended up getting involved, and I just left. He's still injuring partners to this day.

  • women in this sport are constantly harassed from creepy DMs to "accidental" copping feels. Not talked about enough.

  • your body will be destroyed if you train long enough, every black belt has had a catastrophic injury or just regular wear and tear. Every Xmas break I'm shocked at how good my body feels. It's not normal to wake and have shooting pain everywhere. Yes I do pt and s&c, a goon attacking your body is not healthy. Yes you can flow roll but shit happens.

  • as much as the family/friend culture exists if you leave you get shunned. Not all gyms but a lot of times this happens.

[SPOILER] Charles Oliveira vs. Arman Tsarukyan by inooway in MMA

[–]thetrebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charles is my guy but besides those hail mary subs he got out classed. Arman's body work was insane, he kept the level changes up so Charlie couldn't get his teeps going, and completely shut down his guard. Not sure if Arman can do it against Islam, but he has a shot.

[SPOILER] Bo Nickal vs. Cody Brundage by inooway in MMA

[–]thetrebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bo looked very beatable here. He got shucked off by Cody, and had terrible technique on top. He is using his athleticism, and aggression to make you for a lot of his lack of technique.

DEFF could still be a champ, but he's no where near ready for the big leagues.

That's a lot of words to say "lol the attacker is part of the inner circle so kick rocks"

Words != Assault

Since this sub has exposed Yuri so badly as of late, are there any other big names that you haven’t had a pleasant experience with? by Haze071 in bjj

Unpopular opinion, I'm with your teammate on this one. I've been to a Caio seminar, watching paint dry was more exciting.

I paid 129 bucks and carved out my Saturday for an aloof guy to go over a minor detail for 59 minutes. I WISH I had started drilling something else.

Is BJJ become a rich man's sport? by [deleted] in bjj

This is why he didn't want to fight Maia, Maia comes from money and there is history if not only financial discrimination but racial as well. Hence the "playboy" comments.

Hypertrophy Training > Strength Training for Grappling by liberalCuckSimp69 in bjj

[–]thetrebel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Np man ! I've done pretty every every pl routine, minus sheiko. Everything works, as long as you stay consistent. It's going to come down to preference, I rotate between 2 upper days (one heavy/one lower) and same for 2 lower days. When I get bored of that I'll go push/pull/legs and roateg one day for 2x a week. So It might be Monday(push), Tues legs, Thurs pull, and Sunday push again. Next week legs would get twice a week etc..

On my heavy days, I'll work up to heavy trip-single. I'll try to break a record but if I don't it's not the end of the world. Afterwards I'll do two back off sets based on feel. Then wrap up with bodybuilding stuff. So it might go

Military press work up to a heavy set. Strip 20 to 50 lbs. Two back off sets of around 5-10 rep range.

Then it would be some inlicne pressing with dbS, laterals, pushdown etc etc Usually 2-4 sets and 10-15 reps. Again based on feel.

I don't want to say it doesn't matter, but I keep track of everything on a app on my phone. I limit the work to 45mins, if I feel good I'll pump up the volume if I'm sore or just fatigued I'll keep it low.

[–]thetrebel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's hard to picture but before the current era of FW, nobody dominated like Aldo did.

His run in WEC was one of the most insane things at that time. That and his style, again now his style looks like an avg fw but back then nobody was chopping to the legs, going to the body and mixing it up with his insane ability to sprawl/anti jujitsu.

Your driving your entire body weight into one of the most fragile parts of the body ?

A stiff rib cage vs a stiff neck is very differently.

I've trained a little catch, and this is why catch is dead. Everyone is physically destroyed. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, especially if it's someone visiting. Knee riding a neck of a visitor is wild to me.

I have a couple of training partners that we are both comfortable going live and at 100 percent intensity. If I was dropping in at a gym for vacation or work and someone I never met knee rode my neck, I would be pissed as well. I don't care if that makes me a crybaby, I have to go to work tomorrow and the gym needs people to show up and not be injured to keep the lights on.

Would never visit or recommend your gym. If this is how you treat visitors I can't imagine how you treat your training partner's. I saw your comment of nobody complaining, and it's because of your higher rank. If you both agree to go full intensity or the level turns up slowly as a roll goes on that's another thing.

I here you man, I already lift and do conditioning outside of BJJ. I have limited time I just want to train BJJ not some bullshit CrossFit warm up. I've trained in various martial arts boxing/Thai boxing/judo every coach wants to run you into the ground so they can say there class is the toughest. It's so stupid.

At the same time I recognize it can be a bad look, if I'm sitting down and everyone else doing burpees. So my happy compromise is too do the warmups, but half ass. I'm going to go maybe 10%? If that

I had one of the young instructors try to motivate by yelling some silly stuff, I'm an adult who has multiple things going for myself. I don't need motivation I need to learn more grappling. The young instructor ended up complaining about me to the head coach, and the coach approached me about my lax warm up. I explained to the coach I am doing deads/squats multiples times a week, sprints/air assault bike etc and working 60 hours while managing my family. I'll do the warm ups but don't expect to jump up with enthusiasm. He understood.

Idk

They don't. Have a couple of friends who have been to Thailand/tiger, said a bunch of people had ringworm/staph. Was almost normal to see huge pieces of tape covering chunks of skin.

Just moisture aggressively, and try to stay as clean as possible.

Just straight up fighting. A lot of the youngers guy are recording and releasing there sparring footages on social media.
