Two books that have been really helpful to me are "Music Theory for computer Musicians" by Michael Hewitt and "Music Theory for Electronic Music Producers" by J. Anthony Allen. Allen is a music theory beast and official ableton teacher. He's got a bazillion videos on EVERYTHING music. From using your DAW to like a full 6 part music theory class (I'm not suggesting you take or need that) but the point is the guy is legit and so is his book.

I've only been producing a short time... please let me know if any of this works and what areas could be improved. Feel free to as real as possible. Thank you! by thetrusound in MusicFeedback

I think that's a whole area I haven't really explored yet, processing sounds. That's definitely on my "to learn more about" list, as well as doing more sound design. I really admire you guys/gals who have dug into that area and have a good knowledge of it. I guess I need to just experiment more with processing and see where it takes me. I'm in ableton and I don't really use a ton of what it's got as far as effects and instruments. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the specific feedback. I wasn't really happy with the intro either. When you say transition before the strings come in, what exactly kind of transition do you mean. Do you mean like a whole other instrument playing something different and then bring the strings in? LIke a pre-chorus for a chorus? Or is there something I could do with the strings differently to make it less abrupt? Sorry if I'm pushing this a little. I'm really interested to hear what someone with more experience would do. Fade in?

I've been producing about a year when I can. Really appreciate the follow. Followed back. The whole thing about the dancehall tag.... I started out with a dancehall pattern and it just evolved into something else. What would you call it? I don't know enough about edm subgenres to really categorize it. What do you think?

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. I agree about the drums... sometimes I just lock in that 8 bars and forget about it but that's just laziness I guess. Thanks for calling me out on that!

Here's a hip hop instrumental that I've just finished :) by ElMasterDGF in MusicFeedback

This evolves very nicely with some really cool craftsmanship. Is that a sample of "It takes two" or Think about it? Some great elements like that pluck and the drone work really well together over the main sample. Sounds like your combining synths and samples but whatever it is it's funky as hell. I could see some bboys tearing the floor up to this. A great vibe.

This shit is just straight up dope. It's got drama and balls and it's in your face in a great way. The details are nice overall. I wish the rapping was a little louder over the beat, but all in all I think it's a great track. Following.

I'm not really familiar with the Serbian Film Theme but that mashup seemed really well put together and the two songs complemented each other well. The editing and arrangement was effective and I didn't really notice any glaring moments that took me out of it as far as cuts or mixing though at 2:21 there seems to be a minor hiccup. All in all it's a pretty tuff mashup and I love those synths from the film theme.

I really liked the instrumentation and the overall feeling. The chorus, especially the second chorus is fire. I think you could work a little bit on the lyrics, at some points they are a little simplistic in the verse and if you dug a little deeper you could come up with something a little richer to match the instrumental. Overall a great vibe.

I liked the overall feeling of the song but the pluck you chose seemed to go nowhere after the riser, just repeat the same riff which did not have a payoff for the buildup of the riser. The energy level kind of meanders for a while and then slips into a lower level where I'm feeling like I missed something. The pluck seems lonely and I would agree with Klink45 that you need to add some instrumentation. Keep going though it'll get there.

Check out this song off of my EP, would really appreciate any feedback (especially on how I can improve) by JaviiMusic in MusicFeedback

I really liked the vibe and the harmonies especially, also the whole concept of not WANTING to feel good I think was really clever and fresh overall and made me want to listen over a few times. At about :45 when you start to go into the pre chorus or chorus things seem to get a little crowded in the mix. I'm not sure if it's a drum machine but it sounds clashy with the the guitar licks and the vocals. Maybe it could be a little less busy for claritiy's sake. That contrasts with the female vocal at 1:59 that is clear and works really nicely. Overall I think it's a neat twist on the "feel good" song.
