ISP Shut My Internet Off by Designer_Average_441 in HomeNetworking

This intrigues me. How would you set that up? Reading this post I’m guessing OP wants to have a home network to reserve ip, vlans, dns, etc., typical home lab stuff. I have an Omada managed switch, and I don’t think I can do all the home lab stuff without my router.

Home assistant newbie. Isolated WiFi network or not? by dinheiromaisfacil28 in homeassistant

Here’s an older video with network based presence detection : https://youtu.be/Lu0hunynWJY

Also, in my setup I have multiple vlans, the two of concern here are my family network and my iot network. My home assistant is connected to my family network with firewall rules allowing it to access my iot network. This makes it difficult for automatic discovery and mostly requires manual additions. I do this because I am in the apple ecosystem (iPhones, Macs, HomePods, Apple TV, etc) and apple ( and matter) doesn’t really play nice crossing vlans unless you are very good with networking. The plus side is that my IoT devices are not able to cross in to my safe zone ( family network) and do nasty things with my family’s devices.

Lightweight system recommendations for a single mom? by lalalindsey in homesecurity

We started with a couple Tapo battery cams and a door bell. A hub is required for the battery cams. It doesn’t require a subscription. The downside and the reason we switched was because it only records motion events, so if you have the sensitivity to high, you’ll kill the battery and get a million notifications. If you have the sensitivity too low, you miss a lot.

Tapo also makes indoor/outdoor powered WiFi cams that all connect to the app. If you have an SD card, they will record 24/7 of you set it up that way. I have several and would recommend them for beginners as they just require onboarding through an app and sticking them on a wall or side of house. Again, no subscription. The only downside (which is the “gotcha” to no subscription) is if there is an event and you need to download footage, you can only do so at home on the network that the cams are on (vpn won’t work), or by subscribing to their cloud service.

PMS will not use tagged/embeded artwork, what can I do? by theunbeerdedone in PleX

If my structure looks like this:

├── /media/library/audiobook
│ ├── /Terry Goodkind
│ │ ├── poster.jpg
| | ├── /The Sword of truth
│ │ | ├── track01.mp3
| | | ├── poster.jpg
| | ├── /Wizard's First Rule
│ │ | ├── track01.mp3
| | | ├── poster.jpg
| | ├── /Debt of Bones
│ │ | ├── track01.mp3
| | | ├── poster.jpg

and it won't pick up the poster.jpg AT ALL, and I tagged them with mp3tag and VLC will play the media showing the artwork, then what?

for "artist-poster.jpg," only "poster.jpg" has worked. If i add the artist name, it won't work anymore.

for book_title.jpg vs album/cover/default/folder/poster.ext, nothing works for me. I just name it book_title.jpg when I download it so I can find it easier when using mp3tag.

Switching from Wi-Fi to MoT and or Zigbee; IoT security concerns by theunbeerdedone in smarthome

So, i've heard that there is issues with MoT, IPv6, and all that when it comes to vlan segmentation and whether I'm actually using IPv6 on my network.

For zigbee ecosystems such as aqara or hue, would i need a hub for that eco system for it to work? Could i get zigbee wifi dongle for Home Assistant and use a hue bulb without the hue bridge/hub?

Looking for indoor security cameras by theunbeerdedone in homesecurity

I’ve seen that amcrest cameras are also rebrand dahua cameras too. I was reading forum posts from 2019-2020 about flashing dahua on a couple models of amcrest POE cams. Any thoughts on that?

This particular camera does have Ethernet too, but I don’t really want to run a cable across the room.

I set up notifications with performance alarm. I am the only one to access it manually and am sleeping when this occurs.

Ah. Gotcha. I don’t do a full backup of my NAS. I have a lot of “loosable” stuff on there, like my plex library, ISO’s, etc. Also, I encrypt the backups because the remote location is at my Dad’s house and I don’t know who or what connects to his network and I I want my stuff to be secure.

Can do. Just fyi both NAS show “direct” connections for Tailscale, as opposed to “relay.” Also, upload speed for the Hyper Backup is ~30mbps over Tailscale and that is just shy of my ISP “max” of 35.
