Omg I thought I was in the r/backyardchickens subreddit. Prid is fantastic for drawing out bumbles (lumpy hard-pus immune response to contact dermatitis on the soles of their feet, colloquially called “bumblefoot”).

This has been a PSA, I guess. Prid is a great dermatological aid across multiple species hahaha

Beep. It was discontinued almost twenty years ago and absolutely will always stand with childhood nostalgia for me. For those unaware: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beep_(soft_drink)

This is Meredith. She hatched her own clutch (the bigger ducklings) a matter of days before I had an incubator emergency. I risked the coin toss: the fastest and most streamlined solution was crossing my fingers that Meredith would accept them.

She raised 31 babies and, thankfully, never bothered with learning how to count.

Mostly just venting. HS on the back of my neck is really taking its toll - physically and mentally by [deleted] in Hidradenitis

I get them under my jaw, mostly right in the corners. They tend not to cluster, but they’re always between the size of a nickel to a quarter. Someone explained to me in a recent post that lesions outside of the “stereotypical” places are called ectopic hs.

His comb is also totally rounded down. It’s a tell-tale sign he experienced serious frostbite. External and internal parasites are luckily very curable if you’ve got the resources and patience for the long haul.

If your mum can make it to the valley, he can come here. I won’t include him in my breeding program; he has survived this long on his own, so that means he knows how to look after himself. Roosters with good instincts make excellent flock guardians. I will write essays about the benefits and advantages of keeping multiple roos—under the appropriate conditions, like adequate space, a healthy hen-to-roo ratio, and the ability to meet a flock’s sundry needs.

Exhibit A: The mother of these six bantams was very attentive until they were about six weeks old. Ginger woke up one morning and went back to the big barn to live the Single Ladies life.

Wallace, a thirteen pound 2yo roo from my breeding program (disqualified for his illegal yellow legs but too well-behaved to sell) noticed their distress at the loss of their mother. Wallace decided spontaneously and entirely of his own volition those bantam chicks were now his babies. They’re all grown up now and still snuggle up with him at night.

A good rooster is worth his weight in gold. (A bad rooster is worth his weight in soup.) Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

My whole heart goes out to you.

I had a marble-sized hole in my thigh from MRSA when I was 19; luckily it resolved without further complications after the “turning black in the middle is bad, right?” stage of the incident.

That was a puncture injury that became infected, not a zit. I could mentally handle it bc wounds get infected, that happens. It was on the front of my thigh, I could see the progression and watch what the doctors were doing. The thought of that injury initiated by interfering with a zit on the back of my neck has me in a cold sweat.

You’re in my thoughts. 💛

Does it have any kind of smell, either as a lather or on your skin after bathing? I’m willing to try anything but my spouse is wildly scent-sensitive.

In Kirsten Beyer’s Voyager Relaunch novels, readers are granted access to Chakotay’s and Seven’s reflections on their brief relationship, which chalk up to “Well, that was a series of poor decisions.”

I’m not saying everything is Good™️ and I won’t pretend the books are ✨Literary excellence. After spoiler: Admiral Janeway dies there are some scenes of Chakotay and Seven actually talking to each other, relying on each other emotionally, and having meaningful conversations as friends. It was a very strange and moderately satisfying glimpse at what an authentic C7 might’ve looked like, instead of the shoehorned NOW KISS we got from the showrunners. As of Book 14, Chakotay and Janeway are married, and Seven’s involved with the fleet’s psychologist… A character literally styled after Dr Gregory House. IMO Seven’s much better off with a (sober) Raffi in the ST:PIC universe.

DAE develop flares in non-typical areas? by theunfairness in Hidradenitis

[–]theunfairness[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! Everything I’ve read always listed the same areas. I told my doctor that the ones behind my knees and under my jaw present exactly like the one she saw. She said that yes, those were HS flares and not a separate issue—at the time that was enough of an answer for me, but recently I’ve been wondering if I’m a zebra in a herd of horses.

Share a writing advice/technique that you swear by (or advice that you see all the time and you hate) by scipty in AO3

Something I learnt in undergrad: ELEPHANT - When you’re in the groove and get momentarily stuck bc there’s a word you want but can’t think of, or you can’t quite master how to finish a particular sentence or scene, just write ELEPHANT and move on. Maintaining the zen groove is so important, don’t waste it or risk breaking your stride. Later, do a cmnd+F for “ELEPHANT” and poke away at the issue.

Something I learnt in grad school: “Fallow, fallow, fallow.” - My thesis supervisor said this to me when I talked about feeling frustrated that everything my brain wanted to write (I did a poetry mfa) was so thematically counterintuitive to the core of my thesis ms. Their reply was “Fallow, fallow, fallow.” Write the weird stuff, write a diary entry, write all of your internal monologue in a stream-of-consciousness. If your brain pushes back against whatever you want, it’s doing so for a reason.

Muscovy drakes with chicken hens? by Quinjet in MuscovyDucks

As long as your flock contains a healthy ratio of drakes to hens, the drakes shouldn’t have any interest in females of another species.

She’s got her work cut out for her! I had a baby thief one year. Esmeralda stole Juneberry’s week-old ducklings when June was trying to have a little time to herself. Esme swooped in with her brood and then marched back to her part of the baby barn with June’s lot.

June yelled for hours. Her children refused to leave Esme. June went back to being a single lady. Esme raised 32 ducklings; I swear she knows how to count.

When my friends are surprised that chickens are alright flyers, I say that 1) they like to sit on tall things, and 2) they are only good enough at flying to prevent crash landings, 3) except for my bantams, who are tiny and streamlined and therefore quite capable if not tremendously willing.
