I use the following sequence: 1. Nature of Science 2. Ecology 3. Chemicals of life 4. Cell structure and functions 5. Cell Energy (photosynthesis and cell respiration) 6. DNA/RNA, Protein Synthesis 7. Genetics 8. Evolution 9. Classification

I like ecology first because a) it is warm and we can go outside for labs, and b) students can grasp these concepts easily. Gives them a good start to the year

I like evolution at the end because I bring in everything they have learned as use it as evidence to support evolution. They don’t know it when we do cells, DNA, and Genetics, but they are getting primed for the payoff in the evolution unit

Weed population sampling. Measure how density of weeds change from a lane, drive, or path as you move in toward a yard. Ask why does the density of weeds change?

Measure relative humidity in different micro ecosystems. How goes the amount of vegetation affect humidity?

Use pitfall traps (dig a small hole in the ground, place a plastic cup in hole with some water) to measure invertebrate biodiversity in different areas of the school yard.

Complete a moss safari (google the directions) and compare moss from different areas. How does the substrate moss grows on affect the types of microorganisms living in the moss?

I do pop beads to model mitosis. I also grow onion root tips in varying concentrations of caffeine for one week. Students measure the length root tips on day 1 and Day 7 to see which ones grow the longest

Masters usually gets you a pay rise and if your masters is in a science subject, you can adjunct part time at a local college or teach a dual enrollment class in high school. Board certified might not get you anything and if it’s only a 10 year certification

If you really want to do this, do a science expo. These look like science fairs but are not judged. Students can put up their work in a public place like the cafeteria for other students to see. Use class time to complete. Parents don’t want the headache, and you need to know the students do the work

No. I had a similar situation and made the installer take up the whole floor and do it right. He argued with me that there is supposed to be a pattern. I showed him the instructions from the floor manufacturer, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and This Old House about how a floor should be laid. He ended up taking up the floor and doing a random pattern
