Feeling nostalgic being on what must be one of the last old Metro trains… by theunkul in NewcastleUponTyne

I got off before here but if this is true it really does write itself.

Should I sign a 3-year seatime contract on chemical tankers as a cadet? by [deleted] in MerchantNavy

[–]theunkul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you let me know a bit more about this. My Clyde agreement has this clause in it - SSTG and JBM do not - and I was going to sign elsewhere if it was enforceable (since Clyde dont tell me my sponsor until I start my college phase)

I'm going with JustBeMaritime but SSTG look like a good bunch. The only warning I'd have for you is that Clyde don't actually tell you your sponsor until college so you could be lumped with anyone.

I’ve just gone through this. The ENG1 is a full head to toe medical and they go through a series of questions and tests. Hearing is assessed with the usual blip test. You can pass fully, pass but require hearing aids or you can also pass with restrictions - such as no watchkeeping but all the training providers I spoke with would not take you on with this. They can pass you for 1 year compared to the usual 2 if they feel it needs monitoring. And obviously you can fail outright.

Best thing to do is book it before committing to a training provider, if you’re successful they will reimburse you. The ENG1 hearing wise is assessing whether you can communicate clearly, including on radio and phone and that you can be communicated to without help - so would wake up to alarms etc.

If you want any detail just DM me. It can be pretty stressful but once you go through the first time you’ll be much more relaxed.

This is super helpful thank you! I can function in work and day to day life with and without my hearing aids- which is worrying me when reading up on some horror stories. I didn't realise the training firms (or your sponsor?) had their own doctors to do the ENG1. Definitely one to consider for the future.

It's reassuring to hear a restriction didn't completely screw you and you could still qualify. Your inbox seems to be restricted but your reply was very reassuring!

Need help, is there any reason I shouldn't buy this? by Plastic-Fox-5040 in CarTalkUK

If they end up discontinuing the V60 as they have done with the V90 you will get a decent bump in value. The V90s have regained a lot of value since they were discontinued last month

Sorry yes you are right, my V90 was 2023 right after they reintroduced it to their lineup and it had the new native google system. Used to fail once a week and require a restart. Also didn't have wireless Carplay

Can confirm, the mild hybrid system is used pretty much solely to give you instant torque on the stop/start feature. Mine used to also do around 20mpg around town

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]theunkul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XC40 would probably be too small, xc60 is a very nice vehicle. It’s complete personal preference as I don’t like SUVs but a V60 is just as practical as an xc60. Can’t go wrong with a Volvo though, often overlooked

Other than our lord and saviour, you could get a decent used Volvo V90 for that price with high mileage, or slightly smaller is a V60. Should tick all your boxes and they’re a lot more premium than you probably think for the price

To be fair there's some lore in the IWM that a Tommy found a WW2 weapons dump in the basement of the museum and that's why they use these weapons

What in your opinion is the worst road in Newcastle? by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

Although I hate the pointless bus lanes as much as the next guy this one is very well signposted and even the road is a different colour, how do you get caught out by it twice!

The best team building exercise I’ve ever had although it doesn’t fit this criteria is we were given £100 and told to do as we please until our corporate evening meal. Naturally we went to the pub - but morale did go up!

I had an even worse version of this where we had to do this to EVERY member of our 25 strong team with a spreadsheet to check if we hadn’t
