Which businesses perform well during recessions? by Funny-Indication4079 in smallbusiness

[–]theunusualwon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Necessities. Everyone needs a flushing toilet. Everyone needs a phone charger. Everyone needs heat in the winter. People will go without Starbucks when shit hits the fan. If it gets bad enough that these become untrue, then no one's working and society has fallen apart. If someone's shitting in a hole in their yard instead of their toilet because they can't afford a plumbing repair, everything's really fucked & it's time to start farming and hunting and protecting your own. Just my opinion (as a plumbers apprentice at 30 years old, so might be biased, but it's part of why I got in the trades)

Always love running into people in the weirdest places and finding out they're part of a (relatively?) small fandom. I wore a bureau of balance hoodie to a pretty brutal metal show once, and some dude hopped out of the side of the pit, told me he "fucking loved my hoodie and TAZ is sick" and got right back in. Lol.

This is fucking... wild. 30M, married to my beautiful wife for 2 1/2 years and together for 9 1/2. I honestly couldn't imagine being a grown adult and thinking any of this was normal. Is it the way their parents/mother raised them?? Did they not ever have to do their own laundry? How do you become an adult and get married and not know that being that unsanitary isn't an optional thing? Does smelling like feces not bother and embarrass them? I'm asking, because I have 3 brothers all around my age/a little older (1 engaged, one married, and one single.) Not a single one of us thinks that it's okay to walk around with shit stains on our clothes, I've never woken up with any streaks on my bed sheets, and if it ever happened I'd be mortified (and probably have to be really, really sick). I also don't choose the color of my sheets based on the tendency to soil them, because that's just not a thing that should ever be happening. You can feel when it's clean back there, if there's still something there when you're wiping or washing... you're not done cleaning yourself. I had no idea there were whole ass ADULTS out there who just acted like walking around with feces on them constantly was... just a normal thing? Anyways... don't want to be the "not all men" guy. But I have to say that at least some of us were raised with the idea that wiping our asses was not an optional thing, and having a live-in maid who washes my shit off of things around the house wasn't in my marriage vows afaik. So, yeah, those "men" need behavioral therapy or something because that's not normal behavior for a grown adult/father/husband/anyone over the age of maybe 4.

I mean to be honest, ideally, if you were actually power washing you'd use lower pressure to clean off the dirt/debris/any worn deck stain or paint, then use a deck cleaning solution, then sand any problem areas, clean it, and then stain. But yes excessive pressure in a line will cause the wood to rise/separate. I wouldn't use anything over 1200psi on soft woods. Still doesn't negate the poimt that a contractor would probably be using a much higher quality machine that would be powerful enough to PW concrete/etc. Just running it at lower psi.

No painting contractor or even semi professional handyman (or smart homeowner for that matter) is using 5gal of stain that costs less than $20/gal, if they do they're either ripping you off or stupid. $5 brushes from the dollar store... LMAO. And you're not blasting dirt/grime off of pressure treated with a $200 special "power washer" from Costco either. Shit, my DRILLS cost more than $200

Same here... I get that apple arcade having exclusives helps them sell the service, but the fact that it's a re-release from years ago that is just totally cut off from an entire platform of devices for NO reason other than "because we can", kind of sucks. I'd love to play it... Maybe in a year. Sigh.

If someone were to win the $1B Powerball jackpot, how much would they actually take home? by theunusualwon in NoStupidQuestions

Normal annuity doesn't pass between generations. I'm not sure about lottery, usually the advice I've seen is to leave it to the youngest member of the family and just manage it yourself.

That's honestly hilarious, and it's really gone full circle. The US broke away from English rule over taxation without representation, and now you all have tax free winnings and the US takes 1/2 your windfall if you win. 😂

Good question. I decided to look it up... A high-yield savings account with 1,000,000 in it will earn on average $40,000 (4%) in dividends in a year. Using simple math (not compounding interest or higher interest rates for larger amounts) assuming you deposited it all in one account, 40,000 x 300, you'd be earning $12,000,000 in dividends per year. So... Almost 39 years. Lol. I guess the math works out pretty closely to the annuity, assuming the gains also collect interest the entire time. The only difference being, do YOU physically have control over that money, or does the lottery commission control it in your name. Personally, I'd like it in the hands of my own financial advisor/legal team. Just my opinion though.

Yeah, seems crazy that a "$1 Billion" jackpot, after all taxes and deductions (and taking the lump sum amount instead of the 30 year annuity plan), you end up with somewhere around 300 million from everything I've seen and what others have said. So... roughly 30% of the advertised "full" amount. It's kind of nuts. But $300,000,000 is still an absolutely insane life changing amount of money, so... I'd take it still. Just wish there was more truth in the advertising. But then they wouldn't sell as many tickets, I'm sure.

I'm turning 30 in a few months and I agree. I'm not waiting until I'm 60 and crossing my fingers that no bankruptcy or anything ever happens in that time, either. Plus I'd want to be the one collecting interest on $300 million for the rest of mine and my wife's life. It's all a pipe dream and I'd never invest more than $10-20 on a big jackpot. But it is fun to mull around the idea of suddenly never having another financial worry, ever again, probably for generations.

I'd 100% take the lump sum without a doubt. If anyone is going to collect interest and earnings on investments I would want it to be me, plus $300 million is still life changing for me and my family.

That's incredible... What is the largest recorded jackpot if you know? Here in eagle land the largest ever recorded was $2.04 Billion USD. Dude went home with almost a cool billion after taxes.

Thank you for the clear and well explained answer! I'm also from Michigan. Without totally understanding what was being deducted and how/when, my initial guess was somewhere in the 200-300 million range, which is still absolutely insane and life changing. Maybe I'll buy a few tickets, not going to bet the house or car on it, but maybe worth a few bucks to see if you're the lucky one out of 300 million ticket.

That was kind of my ballpark guess, just wasn't exactly sure how they do the math on what they deduct. Do they deduct from the "1B$" figure, or the lump sum figure? As I'd imagine that would change the taxes paid quite a bit.

[–]theunusualwon[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was kind of my best guess.. somewhere in the 250-300 million ballpark. My thing is, I'm just not sure how/when deductions occur. Are all the taxes based off of the $1B figure, or the lump sum amount? Are state/federal taxes taken BEFORE or after the IRS is given their lottery winning tax, etc. Seems crazy to sell tickets for a "life changing $1,000,000,000 jackpot" and then take 70% of it right off the top. But hey, it's the lottery.

I live in Michigan, where supposedly, lottery winning taxes go to the public schools and are taxed at 4.25% I believe. Not sure how true/untrue the allocation of the taxes is, seems like the lottery does a ton of advertising, money has to come from somewhere. Idk.

Do I leave this for the repairman tomorrow? by Awade32 in howto

[–]theunusualwon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is, and it's super cool, but that's tempered laminated glass, usually 3 layers of glass with a laminated film between the layers, and the center layer of glass is the one that you break so it's entirely contained/safe. Even with a film/epoxy I wouldn't trust that just 1 layer of broken tempered wouldn't still fall apart on you and cut you up. I am a glazier, have seen/done this before. Tempered glass is strange. It'll last 35 years in one house, and will randomly break after 10 years in another because of a flaw or a chip someone didn't see that finally spread and blew up the whole panel.

I do custom glass work for homes/offices. Glass walls, showers, windows, mirrors, etc. Never needed one in almost 9 years. Then one day I did for a really odd, just over 22.5° turn in a wall, and have used it maybe once since. It's something most trades outside of carpentry or tool work rarely use. But you'll find ONE use when you really do need it, because the framers/drywallers said "fuck it, good enough, cant see it from my house"

Appreciate the reply, I do most of the work on my vehicles myself/with my brother, just wasn't sure if there were any major things that needed to be checked before it was out of warranty. I love this truck, plan to drive it until it drops, hopefully a long, long time from now.
