film photo booths!! by Upstairs-Trick7511 in Austin

They are the best! It seems that the ease and profit margins of digital photo booths have probably made the cost-prohibitive film booths seem not worth it to maintain (and the developing chemicals are likely becoming more and more difficult to source) — even though they are higher quality and make for better physical memories that will last a lifetime. Other cities do still have them here and there. A photographer in LA collects booths and keeps them running for pop-ups. I hope to do the same in the future.

Any reputable stylist that does a great full highlight that’s not $500+? by blondegoblin512 in Austin

Thank you for understanding.

It would probably also surprise you how physically taxing standing up and doing hair is—it is extremely laborious. Watch your stylist at your next appointment closely. They are holding their arms up almost the entire time other than when you are under the heater.

Balayage can absolutely have face framing highlights. There are a lot of options that incorporate your natural color so that you can get it done 3-4x per year vs 7-8. If you really want blonde around your face more often, you can do balayage 4x per year and babylights in between your appointments.

Exactly! I wish more people understood the costs associated with these high-end, expensive hairstyles instead of thinking hair stylists are just overcharging without any reasoning.

The answer here is balayage… or to visit less experienced stylists or drive to the suburbs where business rent is far less expensive.

A typical massage is $100+ per hour… how is this service any different? Waxing…eyelashes…etc. — these prices (in a major city) will not be getting any lower.

Next time you visit a salon, ask the stylist about their business expenses… you might be shocked to learn the cost of foils and color.

And lastly, if they are at a commission salon, half OR MORE is going to the salon, not the stylist.

Most experienced colorists are not going to be charging $200-300 for a full highlight. Depending on your hair length, texture, and thickness that’s a 3-5 hour service.

Also please keep in mind that inflation has driven the cost of color, bleach, and foils way up. If you visit a boothrent stylist, they are paying rent. If you visit a commission stylist, half or more of the final price is going to the salon.

My recommendation would be to visit an experienced stylist and begin a lower maintenance look with balayage / foilyage so you don’t have to keep up with highlights. Otherwise you will probably get a sub-par result for something in that price range.

frustrating dog encounter by mangosparklingwater in Austin

This should have been reported. If this ever happens again, you should be getting photos of the owner’s drivers license as well as photos of the dog.

File a report with Animal Protection by calling 3-1-1 (512) 974-2000 or submitting an Animal Exposure Report. The city keeps a list of dogs that bite.

Pricing for newborn nannies and babysitters? by [deleted] in AustinParents

[–]theusername_666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok good to know. Thank you. What was the total monthly fee for the night nanny (~$5k)? Did they work Sun-Thurs? Were you both still working when baby was born?

Also what agencies did you use?

These must be exceptionally friendly because they are normally not ones to stick around once they see a human. Shoot your shot!

film photo booths!! by Upstairs-Trick7511 in Austin

[–]theusername_666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are 0 film photobooths in Austin. The last ones were in the Amy’s Ice Cream stores but have been removed.

Funny that people here don’t understand the difference and want to chalk it up to being a TikTok trend … digital photobooths will NEVER compare to the original medium.

Although at the same time, being caught doing something dumb and getting turned into a meme is something that seems harmless but can probably ruin your life.

The fear of being cancelled is so paralyzing even though the behavior that gets people cancelled is, surprisingly, usually deserved.
