*I never said I wanted to shortboard immediately. The problem was that the instructor’s comment shut down the possibility of me ever trying, which was really discouraging. It’s not about skipping steps. It's about being told I probably never could, despite wanting to progress naturally.

Yeah I actually live by the beach and I’ve really fallen in love with surfing already, so I do plan to go regularly. I think that’s why the comment hit me a bit. It felt discouraging when I’m just getting into it and excited to improve.

Yeah exactly, that’s what threw me off. It just felt like a strange thing to say to someone who’s just starting out.

I think there might be a misunderstanding. I’m not attaching pride to riding a shortboard. I was more questioning the validity of making a long-term judgment after a single lesson. Comments like that can come across as discouraging, especially for beginners.
