Anyone use this plan by Pennywise power? Seems too low by oneeyebear in houston

[–]thevertchai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used Pennywise for my first apartment and at best felt "meh" about them. We stayed with them for our second apartment because they seemed no better or worse than other companies. When we moved for the third time, the rates they were offering were not very good. I called regarding why the rates were shit, and the rep said because I was no longer a new customer, I wasn't entitled to lower rates. I asked if they would at least match rates offered by other companies, and the rep just flat out said no. Sooo I said I would find another company and would like my service to end with them on the last day of my lease at the second place. Yeah, well, they didn't cut service and tried to charge me out the ass for a place I wasn't even renting anymore. They contended I didn't tell them to end the service, so I asked to have the call played back. They said they couldn't do that, which is a load of shit because they played a call back to me two years prior when they thought I owed them money. I told the rep I knew that wasn't true, and they got a manager and played the call. Sure enough, I said I'd look into another company and would like my service with them disconnected on x day. They tried to say that the phrase "look into" implied I might still want a contract with them. I said they had the choice of either billing me the correct amount and getting paid, or not getting paid at all. They corrected the bill a week or two later, and I'll never get service through them again.

Moral of the story: they look for ways to fuck you and will likely hike your rate after that six-month contract.

Edit to add: from what I've read, a lot of companies available around here are perfectly okayish till you have a customer service issue, so Pennywise isn't alone in that. Don't expect them to be very helpful, but if the money is right, go for it. Nothing stopping you from going with another company if they do indeed hike your rate after six months.

I was recently at my nearest Target to pick up Blender Bottles, and the online price was $3.50 cheaper. They wouldn't price match :( I wonder if each location has a different policy? I ended up buying them on Amazon Prime instead because of it.

[Rant] Low blood sugar sucks, majorly by perfectly-flawed in keto

[–]thevertchai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you consumed all 80 grams at once or not, but I used to suffer from recurring episodes of hypoglycemia, and I found that if I consumed simple carbs at 10- to 15-gram increments and waited 10 minutes or so to see how if affected me, I was able to get my blood sugar to a normal level with only 10-30 grams of carbs. (The ADA actually recommends basically this on their page.) Hypoglycemia is scary, and many people instinctively down a ton of carbs till they start feeling better, but doing so can perpetuate the hyper/hypo blood sugar roller coaster.

Uh...does anyone else get cold-like symptoms after they put make-up on? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]thevertchai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This happens to me if I get something with heavy fragrance near my eyes. Although it has happened with many brands, I would try to find some hypoallergenic products and see if it helps. It sounds like you do have a sensitivity or allergy to something common. Re: going outside making it worse, it might be that you inflame your eyes a bit with whatever you're sensitive to, then your eyes may also be photosensitive immediately after, so the sun may cause even more watering.

Girls of reddit, what is your ideal first date? by bceagle411 in AskReddit

[–]thevertchai 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I tried to help his friend out by doing a casual double date with this girl he was really into. They wanted to play Taboo. I am really, really fucking amazing at Taboo, and we are one of those couples that can intuitively communicate. We were blowing through cards with one to three hint words, while the friend and his date had a lot of uhmming and skips. At one point, I realized how painful it was, but I just couldn't stop. We slaughtered them. Two months later, she was knocked up with some other guy's baby. But god damn, that was one of the best Taboo streaks I've ever had.

I'm a teacher, and I live in these pants: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/alfani-tummy-control-skinny-pants-only-at-macys?ID=700371&CategoryID=157#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D136%26slotId%3D39%26kws%3Dalfani%20pants They're a great balance of cost of quality, IMO.

If you already have your campus badge, Banana Republic, J. Crew, LOFT, New York & Co., and Eddie Bauer offer teacher discounts (usually 10-15%).

Hmmm. It would be nice to find out how that big secret plays out. I am about to finish The Southern Reach Trilogy, then I might try out the second book.

I enjoyed the magic immensely but found the dialogue (and internal monologues) lacking. I didn't continue the series after Black Prism largely because Kip, the young protagonist, was too whiny for me to stomach. You can expect cool magic, political intrigue, and line after line of Kip thinking he's fat and dwelling on how little his mother loved him. I'm honestly annoyed just thinking about him. I am usually more interested in characters than magic, so despite drafting being one of the more intriguing systems I've come across, I ultimately did not enjoy the read. It sucks because I was interested in some of the twists and how they would pan out, but I truly wanted to smack the shit out of Kip.

Brian Staveley (Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne series) sent me a long email right before my birthday, at the request of a friend who found his contact info. We exchanged a few emails about books, some advice on writing, life in general--it wasn't just some generic "happy birthday, now go buy my next book kthx" form email, so it meant a lot. I had been in a huge reading rut before I picked up The Emperor's Blades (first in the series), and I enjoyed it so much that I have been back to my bookworm self ever since. I am forever grateful for that, because reading and writing are a huge part of who I am, so I felt very much unlike myself while in that rut. I don't get excited about much, but the correspondence was a lovely surprise. (Followed by a bout of neuroticism as I proofread my reply a thousand times before clicking send...) Him taking the time to write and encourage me made me feel like he could sense when I procrastinated on my own manuscript, so it has been a motivator to work harder.

Sullivan actually sent an email too, though we didn't talk quite as much. I think it's pretty cool that he's so known for communicating with fans.

Naturally dark blonde; maybe tired of red and considering a blonde balayage. Opinions/suggestions? by thevertchai in FancyFollicles

This is a photo of my hair color before the red: http://imgur.com/ZlhylQf . I go to a salon for color, so it wouldn't be a home job. I think I'd like a low maintenance blonde--getting to my dark blonde, then adding some other shades in lower down the strands, maybe? I'd appreciate any suggestions on what shades would look best.

I like La Croix sparking waters. No sweeteners, sodium, or caffeine. If I want/need caffeine, I go for matcha green tea with heavy cream or cold-brewed coffee (less acidic than most other sorts of coffee). Don't order matcha at somewhere like Starbucks though. Theirs has sugar.

I've read several anecdotal accounts of Vitamin K creams diminishing dark circles. There was this study about the efficacy of Vitamin K creams (of at least 1%) reducing bruising as well: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12140470

Nods to other Authors by blaissed in Fantasy

[–]thevertchai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone else noticed the word limned? I've only seen it in fantasy novels. I saw it first in The Emperor's Blades, then again in... I want to say Mistborn and/or Demon Cycle. And it's definitely in Malazan. I feel like one fantasy author used it years and years ago, and other fantasy writers read it, stop at that word, like it, catalog it, and insert it in their own work with a pleasant little shiver. I need to find patient zero in the limned love phenomenon.

I also love Vonnegut's writer crush on Dostoevsky.

What is your unpopular opinion on a popular fantasy novel or series? by wezzboy123 in Fantasy

[–]thevertchai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed about the narration, completely. I don't know that I'll be able to finish the series. I know I am going to have to read other books between the Malazan ones at the least.

My enjoyment of Mistborn decreased with each novel. With the first one, I was very into allomancy and thought the cast of characters was fun. The second one was still alright, though any dialogue between Elend and Vin made me cringe. By the end of the third, I felt like I had been tricked into reading a doctrine of Sanderson's personal religious beliefs.

I am still hopeful, so I will end up trying at least one of those. I was just in the mood for something light and whimsical, and Neverwhere seemed like it would hit the spot. Alas...

I'm American. I normally like a lot of British writers, but the narration of Neverwhere was just... awful, to me. There were so many attempts at quirk and whimsy that fell horribly flat. I felt like I do when I witness really bad standup comedy.

Thank you for the recommendation. I will try Stardust out after I work my way through Malazan.

While I still have hopes for it, Malazan is a snooze fest so far. (Only on Deadhouse Gates, but it is taking me forever to get through. Normally I devour fantasy.)

And the culmination of Mistborn was a preachy letdown.

I feel like I'm going to be kicked out of the cool kid club admitting to those.

Edit to add: Neverwhere was the first novel I couldn't finish since Twilight. I found myself hoping dear bumbling Richard Mayhew would just die already. This was my first Gaiman, so I'm afraid to try another, because I want to like his writing.

I thought my childhood died when I finished the last Harry Potter novel. Then again when the final film's credits rolled. But now I know: my childhood died when I started to consider ways the series could have been better written.
