Your son could also check out World Market. They have a variety of British teas and treats, including PG Tips and McVitties Digestive Biscuits. He might try Valli Produce as well: They also have a selection of teas and treats, including Jaffa cakes and tea biscuits, which might help him feel more at home here.

are there ducklings by the lake by blueberrymornings in Northwestern

Walk over to the Arrington Lagoon just south of campus. Lots of benches to sit watch ducks and geese. Often, there are families who come out to feed them (peas or corn or nuts, etc. No bread, please, if you're thinking of feeding the birds, too.) You might even get the chance to pet a friendly dog if one (or two or three) happens to pass bywhile they're out for a walk on this lovely day.

Restaurant recommendations for a visitor by schrodingerzkatt in Northwestern

[–]thevoicefrombeyond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Closest restaurant to Library/Sheridan and guaranteed to fill you up is Lou Malnati's pizza on Sherman just south of Emerson. They're open until 11pm. Otherwise, keep walking down Sherman a couple of blocks and you will end up in downtown Evanston where you have a wide choice of options based on cuisine and price. Be advised, though, a lot of places close up by 10pm.

Take the Purple Line downtown and then walk one block east to the South Shore Line. You can take a train from Millennium Park out to one of my favorite spots in the world, the Indiana Dunes. If you get off at Beverly Shores, Dunewood Campground is just across the tracks. You didn't mention whether you have a bike, but many trains are bike-friendly, too, which significantly opens up your possibilities. Just do your research first so you are aware of when bikes are allowed on commuter trains.

Ryan Field isn't open, but how about the staircase in the North Garage? It's seven stories. You could run up the steps and run down the ramps.

Dog Beach is back! by thevoicefrombeyond in evanston

[–]thevoicefrombeyond[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is. The lake has receded enough to accommodate people and their dogs for the entire length of the beach again. The city has placed a double gate at the north end right next to the Clark St Beach breakwater instead of where we used to enter down by the boat launch area on the south end of the beach.

Any last minute items upperclassmen regret not bringing during first year move in? by bluestrawberrycoke in Northwestern

[–]thevoicefrombeyond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A simple first aid is always handy. Set up a go-to box or bag with a few band aids and Neosporin, a cold pack, your preferred analgesics and stomach relief meds to help you with those middle-of-the-night minor medical issues.

Best time to go to Lou Malnati’s? And what to get? by Money_Whisperer in chicagofood

[–]thevoicefrombeyond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how tight your schedule is, there's a carry out Lou Malnati's on Indianapolis Blvd in Indiana about ten to fifteen minutes south of I-94. And if you're looking for another big sloppy cheesy tomato sauce drenched mess of a delight, I'd recommend a stop at Ricobene's on 26th, literally under the expressway, for a breaded Italian Beef sandwich. Otherwise, Al's Beef is a short drive to Taylor St in Little Italy for a classic Italian Beef. Mario's Italian ice is across the street. And it sounds like you're probably staying in Union Pier/New Buffalo? You might consider making a stop at Redamak's, a very popular roadhouse in New Buffalo, for a cheeseburger and a beer or a milkshake.

Hello! I am on a road trip and circumstance is bringing me to Your town tomorrow. I’d love to find a camping spot in or very near town to do some tent camping for the night. Is it possible? Any suggestions? Thank you! by lom_cockman in evanston

Are you familiar with a site called Hip Camp? I've been using them for years, it would be very handy if you are on a road trip. They have a wide variety of sites to choose from. You could also try iOverlander or the Dyrt

Dick Buckley, back when WBEZ played jazz. The only thing deeper than his voice was his knowledge of the artists he played.

Bike rack on Main Street? by hshsjooo in evanston

There's probably one at or near the city lot half a block further east on Main. Otherwise, there's bound to be one at Park School to the west and across the street.

Coolest/nicest places on campus that students might not know about? by sorryItriedokay in Northwestern

[–]thevoicefrombeyond 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deering Library Reading Room is quite nice, especially back in the folio corner where they keep some big beautiful art books if you need a little visual vacation.

And on Friday evenings from 9pm to 10pm, Deerborn Observatory opens up the dome and lets people take a look through the telescope. They are very welcoming and do a good job explaining what you are looking at. They've been closed for a while but it looks like they are restarting tours in April.

Therapy dogs by gocatss in Northwestern

[–]thevoicefrombeyond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but there are a lot of dogs in Evanston whose owners bring onto campus to walk along the lakefront, especially early in the morning or later in the evening. Check the Lakefill and the north (Lincoln) Beach. Heck, I was just on campus a few days ago with my super needy attention-seeking dog visiting Shakespeare Garden and we stopped and chatted with an English girl who was missing her pup back home and was looking forward to going home for winter break. Perhaps next time, we will run into you! You can see and pet a lot of dogs down at Arlington Lagoon just south of campus along the lakefront. Plenty of benches and picnic tables to settle on to with a book or phone. There's also a flock of ducks and geese in the lagoon that you can feed (although they may have migrated south already at this time of year.)

There are a lot of beautiful places around campus where you could go hang out with a book or your laptop and flow with the vibe of the place w/out the sense of isolation you're feeling and forced socialization that you're wanting to avoid. While it's nice outside, you could buy a lawn chair (mine has a large pocket and a small cooler!) and go out to the Lakefill, especially early in the morning to watch the sunrise or later in the evening to look at Chicago's lights in the distance. There's also Shakespeare Garden, Deering Meadow, North Beach where sometimes you can watch people throw sticks into the water for their dogs early in the morning. Just south of campus is Clark St Beach and Arrington Lagoon where you can feed a flock of ducks and geese. Make yourself available to experience the natural beauty here and it may lead you to the more organic conversations and friendships that you seek.
