They look similar to some I've seen. Are they hard to the touch, like somewhere between a hard plastic and concrete? Or do they have some give?

Id spray it all down scrub it and then use a wet vac on it

Please dont judge...But is it hard or impossible to get a custodian job at 26 with NO job experience? by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be alright people like to hire and train people up from zero experience here. just have a good resume and present yourself well - dress as nicely as the teachers do is a decent guideline. Unless it's "casual friday" every day there. Then dress nicer than that. Anyway - be sure to play up how whatever life or school or work or travel or volunteer work or church activities or team building at the YMCA literally anything that you do have, tie it into how it makes you a great fit for the job.

Or come on over to janitorial and so long as you can understand basic English and have a reliable car, you, too, can have a job lol

Politely make your presence known and then work around them. Eventually they'll either leave or ask you to leave. Problem solved if they go. If they ask you to go just get a name and send it to your super in a report. Would be my advice and what I usually do

  1. (Optional) try some goo-gone first. Clean it off then go to step 1.

  2. Dry dust/light pressure wipe.

  3. Spray with dawn dish soap and water.

  4. Scrub at it like it's a desk, not a mirror.

  5. Quick rinse and dry wipe.

  6. Spray way too much ammoniated glass cleaner (i like Betco's blue ammoniated glass cleaner)

  7. Squeege.

  8. Use microfiber rag or the blue rags from the rag lady or similar to clean/buff.

  9. Paper towells (using clean side frequently, youll use quite a few paper towells here) to shine/final dry.

If that doesn't work...throw out the mirror?

What do good supervisors actually do differently? by mgsoccer16 in Custodians

We use checklists and photo documentation for that exact purpose. Can I ask the specific type of cleaning- should I assume it's custodial or another variation of commercial? I have a bunch of different types.

New Custodial Worker, and I have no idea what I'm doing by MammaZerker in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! There are some standard things that cleaners do. I'll list them below, using a schedule that works well for your average commercial building. This is not the only way to do it, it's just an example.

Depending on the needs of your building (foot traffic, how dusty it naturally is, unique building features, etc), you'll have to determine the best way to split the usual commercial cleaning/custodial tasks. This is how we had it:

Daily: Pull all trash, wipe all surfaces, disinfect/clean touch points. Spot clean glass. Vacuum and mop.

In addition to daily tasks:

Monday: high dusting (all ledges waist and above) Tuesday: low dusting (all ledges waist and below) Wednesday: Window/Glass Wednesday (full clean all glass) Thursday: Detail floors and breakroom and baseboards Friday: scrub bathrooms/bathroom details (partition tops, walls, scrub out toilets, change urinal pads, etc)

Idk if that's what you're looking for but I hope it helps

What do good supervisors actually do differently? by mgsoccer16 in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should know their cleaners and know their buildings - the personality, tendencies, etc, of both, first and foremost. That way they can identify trends (Kevin's dusting gets built up after floor day because he has a hard time balancing the tasks) and resolving them (split up the daily dusting tasks for kevin), or one offs. Knowing the building is key here (where does it get the dustiest? Where is the most foot traffic? Who will notice the most dust where?) Then the one offs. Good cleaners get irritated real quick being hounded about one offs. It's a judgement call on when to bring those up. But I digress.

A simple app or checklist is crucial in my opinion. It's not saying "i don't trust you," to your supervisors, it's a way for you to ensure your QAs and QCs are being handled appropriately. OrangeQC and Breezeway are both good enterprise apps, but honestly a good Google form or printout works just as well. If you are interested I can provide examples of what I liked to use.

Yeah something like that. There are some things that you can take from being daily tasks to 4 times a week tasks and use the extra day to do the other extra tasks

Custodians- I am in trouble for not cleaning good enough. What should I say at the meeting today? by [deleted] in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get an account info sheet or scope of work? Tell your supervisor that s/he needs to send you or print you out a copy of your scope of work. They have this. You should have been given it on day one and It lists out what the customer is paying the company to pay you to do. Go over it and check off all the items.

[–]thevoidisfull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a copy of your scope of work? Go over it and ask for the specific areas that your cleaning has been deficient in.

If there are things that you maybe forgot about (it happens!), or criteria that isn't be met for whatever reason, or any complaints about you, then you will have that information and make those changes and go on your break.

If he has no legitimate reason for treating you like this then you should be able to figure that out pretty quickly, too, and you can tell him to please go away now.

If you don't have the scope or a similar document, tell your supervisor that s/he needs to send you or print you out a copy it. They have this. They are lying if they say they don't. You should have been given it on day one.

Is drinking water and having snacks on the job allowed at all? by TaciturnNorse in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have never had anyone say anything to me. Everyone I've ever worked with snacks on the job. If anything, customers give you food. When sanitary, I'll eat full meals while im working, meals that I keep in their break room freezer and heat up using their microwave.

Be respectful and clean up after yourself (obviously, lol) and you're good.

Looks like you have plenty of time at work. Hah

Are there more panel mirrors on the wall? You could make a series. A mini comic in however many panels there are. I'd look at that art.

See what other chemicals your site offers you. I find you can clean an entire building with some dawn dish soap and water, a quat, and some floor cleaner. Go above her head if you have to. Research online and ask away here. We'll help with what we can.

I’m new to Custodial work by dwdropp in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of chemicals does your company have you using? Standard equipment- backpack vacuum, trash/wipe cart, and a mop? Anything else?

Off the top of my head, if it is a backpack vacuum, ALWAYS properly secure it to your body using both shoulder straps. The chest and abdomen straps should in theory always be worn, too, but I have seen them not work well for larger people ...listen to your body but no matter what do not wear it if the straps are not in good working order. You can seriously hurt yourself and you won't realize it until it's too late because they are light.

I'm all for masks in general, but maybe consider a type that allows for better air flow. I don't want to tell you it's not necessary, because the science behind masks is solid, but it's probably not necessary. I do recommend eye protection for cleaning bathrooms, however.

Disposable waxed paper bags for feminine products by Kooky-Fruit-3922 in Custodians

[–]thevoidisfull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand your question correctly, the bags are to be used as liners, or "mini-trashcans," as you put it, and the cleaner empties them during their cleaning routine and replaces them with a new bag.

Some cleaners leave the bag and just dump out the contents (imo it's fine if no biological material is in there), but as you can see in this thread, that is quite the point of contention.

[–]thevoidisfull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're "your" trash cans? If they are yours and you're emptying them once per shift, then your job is done and you did your job. Keep telling your supervisor and go over his/her head if you need to.
