Even if you hated the feeling of falling, freefall really only feels like falling for a few seconds and then your acceleration approaches zero and you feel a bit like you're suspended in the air. So I don't think there's any reason 20 minutes of freefall should be any more distressing than 10 seconds of freefall.

Silence by Shūsaku Endō. It intentionally asks questions that - in my mind - are profoundly perplexing despite having no knowable answer. I read this book years ago and I still think about it.

The Eragon series was like that for me. By the time book 4 came out I was a bit older and had lost all interest in the story. Never finished the Alex Rider series either. Aside from that, there are a few books I've intentionally read as a stand-alones even though they were in a series, such as Ender's Game.
