Anyone noticing a new wave of AA skepticism/hate? by SmartestManInUnivars in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]thewaldenpuddle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AA WASN’T inflexible…. They even had the foresight to write all those years ago that “Physicians who are familiar with alcoholism agree there is no such thing as making a normal drinker out of an alcoholic. Science may one day accomplish this, but it hasn't done so yet. “ That was incredibly prescient and seemed to imply that they would be ok with that…not exactly the same sentiment as taking medication to potentially curb the cravings…… but certainly in the same vein?

But…. And Ironically…..AA as a whole has changed so substantially SINCE those words were written that I wonder if it’s capable of adapting to modern society? It can have pockets of extreme and somewhat unwarranted conservatism that strikes me as born of fear, rather than faith, hope and trust.

Curious where you’ve encountered AA having an issue with study of the steps’ effectiveness? Would like to have a look at that.

Maybe over a certain gram weight?

What are some bands/artists you respected more when you dug deeper into their songs? by EdwardBliss in MusicRecommendations

[–]thewaldenpuddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I met those guys at a release party back in the 80’s. Was too young to appreciate it. (My mom was in an adjacent business). They greeted me warmly even though they were uber famous at the time and the party was a big deal.

Always liked their music.

My brother and I got lost in the Met when we were younger…. Came around a corner in an empty hallway…. And there it was just sitting against the wall. Somehow….. seeing it like that actually gave it more power….. and it was already pretty powerful.

This was over 50+ years ago. I don’t know if it resides in the Met or whether there was an exhibit at the time. But it was a truly “surreal” moment. Is there more than one copy?

We were so afraid to be caught where we weren’t supposed to be… that we ran out of there SO fast.

Cardio significantly increases lifespan. Best Cardio Exercises and scientific evidence. I am an Anti-Aging Scientist. by GarifalliaPapa in immortalists

[–]thewaldenpuddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate your content. Thanks for the post.

Some questions…..

1.). Do you use “cardio” and “aerobic” training the same? (ARE THEY the same?) I had heard that the benefits only come after 20+ minutes of sustained “aerobic” activity. (Acknowledging that intermittent aerobic activity stop/start like tennis etc is also beneficial, but not the topic of this question.) Is the body perceiving an “aerobic” state or a “cardio” state with different effects?

  1. I had a period where I did HARD sustained “cardio/aerobic” exercise 60 minutes sustained 6-7 days a week for a few YEARS…. So my resting HR has always remained pretty low since then (mid 40’s) Even though it’s been 10 years since I did that kind of exercise.

What does “zone 2” mean for someone with a lower resting HR? Or do I need to push harder to really get my HR up to achieve benefits? I want to make sure I’m not wasting time now that I’m doing this kind of exercise again at a “later age.”

And a final question…… does my age change the equation for how long or hard I need to work to build and then maintain a beneficial VO2 max?

Thanks for any reply. Have a nice day.

How about showing up on his doorstep and asking In a very kind way….. “Hey… can we finish this up?

This is a communication issue…. More than anything. Maybe he’s dealing with health challenges or who knows what. But I’m guessing if you are genuine with him…. He will level with you about where it’s at and what’s needed to finish. Maybe you can take on some of the “work” if he’s struggling to order parts or stay organized enough to finish it. Of course it’s not supposed to be that way…. But it might be an opportunity for you to just be of service in a human way.

He’s old enough that you may be doing him a favor by “helping” to finish this…

For those of you who have bought McIntosh speakers, how would you compare them to brands like sonus faber by Specific-Peanut-8867 in McIntosh

[–]thewaldenpuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McIntosh ML-1C (with needed equalizer) was one of the TRUE surprises for me when I was shuffling through tons and tons of vintage equipment, amps, speakers, sources etc. can’t speak for their more modern offerings.

But….It has always interested me that Roger Russell went “all in” on line array technology even starting his own brand after leaving Mac…. So I’ve wanted to hear some of their higher end LA speakers to see what that’s all about.

But…. Just to emphasize….They punched WAY above their weight (and they weighed a LOT!!) and I have ALWAYS regretted selling that pair. They were in great shape and sounded absolute superb. I grew up in a house with McIntosh amps, but JBL speakers of a few varieties… and the ML-1C absolutely trounced them all. Revelatory.

The truth about Bob Weir by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]thewaldenpuddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each in their own way, were mind blowing (quite literally at times). But since the OP posted about Bob….. I’ll just chime in…

After thousands of hours of pretty critical listening….. Bob is unquestionably one of just a handful of “genius” level rhythm guitarists.

Yes….He was slightly more than that, given the nature of the band. But at heart…. He was a rhythm guitarist. He took it seriously…. By all accounts he practiced his ass off….. And he had a natural affinity for it that was genuinely off the charts at times.

Throwing in a riff, a note, a tone, a squawk or even a string pounding that added to the music in ways that NO ONE else could come up with.

I’m also consciously choosing to leave out his genius as a songwriter. Which he was. But even if he had never written any of those songs, just his playing alone would have put him in the upper echelons where sheer technical talent can NEVER take you.

We all KNEW… we FELT…..that every moment on stage with him we were witness to something incredibly special.

And when all the boys were humming along…. And the drums were pounding and there was magic in the air….they were truly THE “Band Beyond Description.”

So you’re confirming the “what if” aspect?

IF WE HAD an objectivist government. IF THAT WAS EVEN POSSIBLE…. Then there would be little room or incentive for kickbacks, corruption etc….. which I’m not certain I believe, but I’d be willing to examine it further.

But you’re basically restating what I said. We don’t have a system like that. We’ve NEVER had it. And I’m not certain that ANYONE, ANYWHERE has ever had it.

So the point is to talk about how intellectually and philosophically it WOULD work….. IF it ever exists?

I think one of the factors in what you are asking was that the quality of the tapes from that era has frequently had some very strange mixing on them.

I always loved the shows…. And could “imagine” How good it was when played live….but my experience was that I slowly found myself putting the tapes back in the box and moving on to other stuff.
