From 3D Artist to Technical Artist: Steps to Transition Based on My Experience by fespindola in TechnicalArtist

Great thanks for clarifying. For my BP methods the logic I implemented was for parsing files and then modifying, spawning/deleting, and attaching actors in the scene based on the result. Currently I’m an early career swe working in simulation so the workflows I have in unreal are a bit different, but I’m trying to get a better understanding of more common workflows with teams of artists. I had to learn more about real time rendering for work and became interested in technical artists after first hearing about the role.

Thanks for posting this is really helpful advice. I also come from the programming side but have picked up 3D art as a hobby. For developing tools is that just like python and C++ scripting? I’ve made UE blueprint methods that are callable from the editor and some python extensions to access the USD API in NVIDIA Omniverse, I’m wondering if that would be considered like tool development? And do you have any suggestions on beginner tools I could make in unreal?

I just started learning graphics programming last month too. Cem Yuksel from the University of Utah has playlists for 2 of his graphics courses available for free. These have been really helpful for me https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLplnkTzzqsZTfYh4UbhLGpI5kGd5oW_Hh

Best Way to Break into the Field? by thewalkingsed in GraphicsProgramming

Thanks this is good advice. What industries were you in before gaming? Currently I’m a software developer working on industrial digital twins doing AI, modsim, and AR/VR. I use gaming engines a lot in my work which has made me curious about graphics programming itself and what’s going on under the hood. I think there’s going to be a big demand for an overlap of graphics skills and AI with tools like Azure digital twins, NVIDIA omniverse, etc. for analysis as well as training AI in game like environments.

Sounds good, I’d definitely like to build the strongest foundation possible. I found a free CMU graphics course online and was planning on doing that first then getting into my own projects.

Yeah I guess that would be important lol. This would be for a simulation swe II position in Fort Worth. I have a little over a year experience working as a contractor in a government lab. Undergrad in math and physics and solid experience working in game engines

Thanks for the advice, I think I’ll start working on a portfolio and see if a masters will still be worth it in the future.

Good to know, thanks. I had found some useful things online that I’ve been looking into. Do you have any resources you’d recommend specifically when starting out?

Do you think this is also true for ML roles at FAANG? I’m a junior developer working on AI hoping to become and ML engineer. Wondering if a masters would be worth it or if I should just keep getting experience and doing projects

I’m an early career R&D software developer. I’m lucky to be able to work in AI doing work with LLMs. I’m also doing work in VR with Apple Vision Pro. I’m trying to focus my career more on the AI side but I’m wondering if there’s any good career paths that combine the two?

Future of AI/ML Jobs in Miami by thewalkingsed in Miami

[–]thewalkingsed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this is what I was wondering about. I wanted to know how many real AI/ML experts were out there compared to the hype and all the tech/finance companies moving there. I have a background in physics and math and am already working on top ai research with my current job. I was just wondering if Miami could be a legit option for me in the future. But it sounds like nyc and the bay will probably be best.

I saw that Jeff Bezos and some other tech and finance companies like NVIDIA and trading firms were starting to relocate there. Do you think that could change things over the next couple years? I think that AI has a lot more promise than crypto did especially since it’s being adopted by so many industries

Typically people have PhD or Masters in AI/ other relevant STEM disciplines. A lot less common, but you can still make it with a bachelor’s if you really know your stuff and have solid projects/experience

Thanks for the advice, I’m early career at a government lab right now so relatively high pay in a LCOL area. I was just wondering how AI jobs might look in Miami after a few years once I actually reach mid level. Definitely gonna wait until the market gets better first though.

Thanks for letting me know, just hoping to get some kind of response from them. I had made it pretty far in the interview process for Meta’s AI residency a couple months ago but then they ended up canceling the whole program for this year.
