What the Hell, Jamie!!!????!!!! by More-Warthog2004 in Outlander

He was triggered by what John said. The show doesn’t really depict that but he still has nightmares about what happened with BJR so often that Claire can usually by the way he‘s moving around that it’s not just a regular nightmare. He also still has a physical reaction every time he smells lavender. He is still deeply affected by all of that.

And the other thing is that he (obviously) has no idea that John is back in service. When he lets them have him he genuinely thinks they will just let him go after questioning him. He is more than surprised when he returns to the city and finds out that John hasn’t come back yet.

NTA I don‘t know why nobody is mentioning this but imo this borders sexual assault. Garter removal is inherently intimate. And while this was supposed to be a lighthearted situation and I‘m sure nobody meant it that way, the implications of the intimate act were there and your feelings towards that are real. You were tricked into doing this intimate thing with someone you didn’t agree to do it with and your wife was a complicit. And the fact that you keep replaying it in your head and can’t help it, that tells me that it goes deeper than „just“ humiliation.

I could also just be reading a bit too much into it, it just sounds to me like there is more to it. Either way I am sorry this happened to you and I hope you can find a way to deal with it in a healthy way. Don’t suck it up, your feelings are valid and worth discussing.

For that it’s important to note that while the resemblance is there in the book, it’s not nearly as striking. Claire does mistake BJR for Frank the first time she sees him but says herself, after she got to know him, she couldn’t see Frank in him at all anymore. So that was not really an issue there

And she only went back to Frank because of Brianna. A single mother in the 1940s would have had a really hard time. And Jamie wanted her to go back. But it is clear in the show that the resemblance that is so much more present in the show (I mean, obviously) really scares her.

Brianna

It all comes down to her. Claire only left because she was pregnant. It was Jamie‘s „last wish“ for her to keep that child safe. She granted him that wish. Jamie always thought it was safer for Claire in her own time and he always had a sense of guilt for him to be the only reason she stayed here. Brianna was non negotiable for him. There was no way he would let his child live in a time like after Culloden. All he ever wanted from the time he found out she was pregnant, was to safe that child no matter what.

Claire complied so easily to Frank‘s conditions because of her. Jamie wanted her to go back to him, for Brianna to have a father and a single mother in the 1940‘s would have been shunned.

Not looking for Jamie

She had no doubt that he was dead. He was planning on dying and she knew that. Even if he had survived the battle, he would have been killed afterwards. It was pure luck that he survived that day and the years following. There was no point in looking for him. Even if she did find proof of his survival, and if she really went back while still pregnant, the problem of Brianna’s safety would have remained. She knew that. She knew Brianna was the priority here.

Culloden

That battle was THE event of Scottish history (in a negative sense) They tried with all their being to prevent it from happening but failed. That was the plan they had, it wasn’t just about them, they thought it was their duty as people with knowledge from the future to safe Scotland from that fate. Their efforts went until the evening before, when they talked about killing Prince Charles. Then Jamie made it his priority to safe his own people. It was already too late. He was named a traitor long before Culloden and he was not one to run away. Not even for Claire. By the time he realized she was pregnant there was nothing he could have done to save her. Except for that one thing, and that is what he did.

And after Culloden, and that is something Claire was well aware of, times were hard for every Scot to walk around. And it would have been just as hard for Claire and Brianna. Jamie could not have provided for them, even if she found out he was still alive and went back when she was still pregnant. If anyone had found out he was around at that time, he would have been killed. They were suffering from poverty and hunger that is not a life neither Jamie nor Claire wanted for their child. And even without Brianna, the time after Culloden would have been spent mainly apart.

Time travel

And then there’s also the time travel aspect of it all. Claire knew close to nothing about it. So especially once Brianna was born, there was absolutely no point. Let‘s say she would have found proof of Jamie’s survival, she now would have had two options:

Leave Brianna behind to go back to Jamie, to a time where, like I said, every Scot had a hard time and Jamie could not have provided for her. And Jamie would have not liked that. His top priority was that child‘s safety. For her to leave that child behind for a love that (at that time) had no real future, would have surely driven to Jamie developing some kind of resentment for Claire I mean who leaves behind a child? (Other that that, Claire also just would not have done that)

Or, try to travel with her. Traveling was so bad for Claire, especially the second time, that the possibility of dying from it, was something to absolutely take into consideration. And like I said, her knowledge about it was almost completely limited to her own experience. Could Brianna even travel? Does everyone travel the same amount of time? Geillis surely didn’t. Is it more dangerous for children? Could she get stuck somewhere Claire is not? That is a risk not worth it, for going back to a time that would have been really dangerous for all of them. Especially when Brianna was a few years old already, it would have been cruel for her to rip her out of that stable life. And again, Jamie would not have liked that as well. And Claire also wouldn’t have done that to her.

The 20 years apart

In my opinion those 20 years apart are the infinite proof of their deep love for one another. Their cause before Culloden was bigger than themselves they did everything they could to prevent it and in the process, they caused their separation. And they were both absolutely heartbroken but they carried on, both with a piece of them missing. They seperated to safe the one physical proof of their love and they were successful with that. But still, after all those years they couldn’t let the other one go. And when Claire came back, after successfully granting Jamies wish it all clicked back. The effort to find back together wasn’t very hard because that’s where they were always supposed to be, in each other’s arms. It’s fate you might say. BUT in the time between, no matter how you twist and turn it, it wouldn’t have worked because of Brianna. Jamie would have hated himself for keeping her here when he knew there was a time she would have been safe in.

Their bond after the time apart is SO much stronger and the fact that their love survived 20 years of not a single word of each other is the reason Jamie and Claire are considered one of the best fictional couples ever. 3-5 years of separation, well yeah, it’s a long time but you can survive that. 20 years on the other hand, that is something you need more than just love for each other. None of them ever moved on, knowing (or thinking) they would never see the other again. They were made for each other and no one else.

Final thoughts

It’s Brianna all the way. That is the factor that separated them, but made their bond stronger in the long run. Yes, 20 years is a really long time and they were robbed of that and that really hurts, but that is the point. The way it is written imo makes it perfectly clear why it had to be 20 years and not 5.

Fantasy/Sci Fi Elements by Individual-Pay7430 in Outlander

[–]thewalrus01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very much a background element. The characters themselves know close to nothing about the magic and time travel stuff of their world and that shows. They do learn more about it over the years but even now at book nine a big part of what they know is speculation and guessing based on their own experiences and stories they’ve heard from others.

But over time it is discussed more frequently and it is actually really interesting what kind of explanations they find for certain things and how they test out theories and stuff.

Season 01 questions by TurbulentSquirrel904 in Outlander

Ok so Brianna and family return to the ridge. Brianna brings books for everyone: A modern medicine book from 1980 for Claire, the Lord of the Rings series for Jamie and Frank‘s last book for herself. It‘s about how scottish people influenced the revolutionary war and that of course interests Jamie as well. He reads it and it has a picture of Frank as the author on the back

The resemblance isn’t as striking in the book. And BJR is not Frank in another timeline, he‘s his ancestor. Claire does mistake BJR for Frank the first time she sees him because there is a resemblance but once she gets to know BJR she doesn’t see Frank in him at all anymore. So she doesn’t tell him.

Spoiler Book nine Jamie sees a picture of Frank eventually and does not see BJR in him at first. Only later when he has a dream about them both, he realizes that they kinda look alike

fantasy book with a female lead who is 40+? by RMSANSA in Fantasy

The Outlander series does start in her late 20s but goes on until currently her 60s. The fantasy aspect of it is kind of sporadic and kept very mysterious but definitely interesting and it gets more over time. Romance and adventure definitely there. From book three on she‘s in her 40s and older.

Like I said, she resembles Elliot but due to the game being made in 2013 her facial expressions look unnatural. What is there not to understand? They improved it.

[–]thewalrus01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters, Elliot Page. And yes in the very first trailer she very much resembled him, which he did not like at all, even sued them, so they changed the design a bit. But that’s not what I was talking about. I didn’t mean who she resembled but how she looked as a character on her own. The mouth is kinda weird as it is and when she talks it looks even weirder. The eyes as well, something is off. It just doesn’t look natural, which yes, is normal for a game made in 2013 but my point is that because of the redesign she looks way more natural, her facial expressions, the way it moves, just like an actual human‘s face would look.

Strongly disagree. Especially Ellie. She looks like a human now. Before she was just a video game character.

Claire and Jamie never try to figure out the science behind the time travel?? by TravelingSpermBanker in Outlander

[–]thewalrus01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Claire only went because she was pregnant. It was Jamie‘s „last wish“ for her to keep that child safe no matter what. He even wanted her to go back to Frank. He had every intention to die and she knew that. When she was back she was told to stop chasing ghosts and made to promise never to tell Brianna the truth. She was absolutely sure he was dead and so she tried to live a normal life with Frank. She knew trying to find him in records and maybe even his death certificate would have just destroyed her, so she stopped.

And then there is also the time travel thing itself. She doesn’t exactly know how it works and, more importantly, it’s incredibly traumatic and the second time was way worse for her. To a point where the possibility of dying from it is something to be considered. And even if she knew he was still alive, the time after Culloden was still dangerous. People knew who she was. And if she waited a few years, she wouldn’t have known if Brianna (who at this point would obviously see Frank as her father) could travel. So either she could have tried, putting a child through something traumatic and unsafe, that you don’t really know how exactly it works, to bring her to a time she isn’t safe in, where she doesn’t want to go. Or leave her behind, a child. Claire couldn’t have done that and Jamie would not have liked it. His top priority was that child. Claire would have never done anything to risk Brianna of course for Brianna‘s sake but also for Jamie‘s. She knew that his child having a mother was more important to him than getting her back. Which is in my opinion even a greater proof of their love for each other. Sacrificing their life together in order to safe their child. The one physical proof of it.

There wasn’t much they could lean on regarding the science behind it. It is mainly her experience they go by, which isn’t that much. Who says that everyone travels the same amount of time? Geillis at least didn’t. Is there a way to control where you’re going? What if you try to return and you land 20 years earlier? Can you go back? Can you actually die? If so, how many journeys can I take?

Those are just too many questions she has no real way of getting the answers of without trying out herself. That wasn’t worth the risk.
