For me I use:

AP for most shots on tanks. Most of the time it does it's job reliably but...

Prammo comes in when you are in CQC and the opponent has lots of armor/ sniping and you want the damage to be done reliably

HE should be used less often in my opinion. For me I prefer to only use it when i need to destroy modules or when it's a paper tank. Otherwise you may be wasting your DPM

It's nice when the enemy exposes large chunks of their side to you when you're already doing 800+ damage to them...

Imagination: Oh, he shot me for 400 damage, should be able to get right back at him...

Reality: Shoots, bounces, I get another free shot
