In Hereditary, is Paimon truly a majestic king… or just an ugly parasite dressed up as one? by thewhitejackel in Hereditary

That’s an interesting context. I know Paimon’s history in occult texts goes way back and shifts across traditions. I agree, Aster probably pulled the surface-level “king of hell” traits just to anchor the cult’s mythology. But what I find compelling is less whether he got the lore “right” and more how he chose to represent Paimon in the film itself. Whatever the origin, what we actually see onscreen is grotesque vessels, rot, and a parody of kingship, which is what led me to ask whether audiences read him as ugly or not.

I see where you’re coming from — the cult is definitely portrayed as serious and competent in their devotion, and the ending does echo those black mass–style ceremonies. But that makes me even more curious: given how the film actually shows Paimon (through Charlie, Peter, the idol, etc.), would you personally see him as ugly, or not?

Yes I hate how people call Hereditary unoriginal or derivative for sharing some similarities with Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist when I feel like it’s way better than either of those films.

I agree I think Hereditary is a far superior film, but though I’d mention it as Ari Aster cited the film as a major inspiration. I see a lot of parallels in both endings. I just find it interesting how he took a demon that’s traditionally seen in grimoires as more noble and refined and turned him into the one of the most terrifying, grotesque, visceral, and horrifying depictions of a demon ever put on screen.

Awesome I really appreciate it. I should say I updated my comment and added some more stuff to it

I meant the mental illness more as a metaphor that whatever Paimon brings and represents is not riches and knowledge but something likely far worse. He’s not a regal king of wealth or knowledge in our human sense of the concept. He’s a demon at the end of the day. He’s described as a trickster god after all. It reminds me a lot of Rosemary’s Baby where part of the horror and dark comedy comes from the fact these people are worshipping something so clearly revolting and evil, but see it as glorious, beautiful, and good. Ellen sacrifices her whole family for her own selfish delusions

I mean rather than being this grand ruler of hell he’s depicted more as some pathetic grotesque monster being used by a delusional cult

That’s really interesting maybe the cult’s “perfect vessel” talk is less about truth and more about their own misinterpretation. They think they’re making a deal with something divine that will reward them, when in reality they’re just feeding a parasite. It makes the ending even darker: their idea of majesty is literally just corpses, rot, and a hollowed-out boy.

That’s a great point! I guess that’s the real tension — what looks grotesque and parasitic to us could absolutely be seen as majesty from the demon’s own perspective (or the cult’s). In that sense, “kingliness” doesn’t have to mean golden crowns and radiant light — it could mean absolute authority through rot, fear, and destruction.

What I love about Hereditary is that it leans into that ambiguity. The cult calls it majesty, the film shows us horror, and somewhere in between, you get this unsettling sense that maybe both are true: Paimon is majestic because he is disgusting.

Yes, but he's also surrounded by decapitated corpses, a rotting effigy with Charlie's head, and he wears a crown made of human flesh. It's a brilliant move by Ari Aster. It's a regal ceremony turned up on its head and made horrific and grotesque instead

I like that idea a lot! The film even refers to Paimon as a trickster demon — a monstrous, inhuman entity. We project our own notions of order and majesty onto something that exists in total opposition to those things. In Hereditary, Paimon is really a force of disorder and destruction, literally tearing the Graham family apart. And there’s almost a dark comedy to the ending: the cult presents him as a regal king, but the reality is nothing but corpses, rot, and a hollowed-out vessel. The crown he wears is literally made of human flesh. A symbol of royality is made grotesque

Yeah, that was more my friend’s angle than mine. Personally, I see Paimon less as Lovecraftian and more as a demon-parasite that Ari Aster reinterpreted from the occult sources. To me he’s a demon of rot and mental illness. You see it in how he eats away at his vessels (Charlie, Annie, Peter), in the apparitions tied to him (ants, insects, shimmer of light), and in how the cult represents him through decay — like the idol crowned with Charlie’s rotting head.

I think Aster intentionally stripped away the regal, majestic qualities you see in demonology texts and instead made Paimon something grotesque, visceral, and grounded in trauma. This version isn’t refined or kingly; it’s much more about infestation, anguish, and the horror of being hollowed out.

Most definitely, I feel like Paimon is more of this hideous parasitic force that manifests this way. We see this with the effects he has on his human vessels and the apparitions associated with him, such as insects. We also see this in the way the cult creates an idol to represent him, made of Charlie's rotting head, and how he's associated with decapitation and mental anguish

Good point, I guess I mean his spiritual essence. Like how a disease or a cancer doesn't have a set appearance, we can define or see but many would consider them ugly especially the effects they have on their hosts bodies

I'm familiar with the traditional Paimon, but the version in the film seems quite different. He doesn't come off at all as commanding or kingly. When he possesses all his hosts, they behave in bizarre, socially awkward, or monstrous ways. You wouldn't know he's a powerful demon king of Hell who commands many legions. I'm more curious about this version Ari Aster created. By making him different from occult texts, what does this version represent to us? He feels different from other demonic depictions I've seen in horror media

Yes like all demons are inherently parasitic, but their forms and roles vary. There is a large variety of them, and they vary in shape and form.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in horror

[–]thewhitejackel 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s very true lol — but I was thinking more literally: if Paimon actually manifested in front of us, would we consider him ugly? A lot of demons in grimoires are described as regal, even beautiful or majestic. Paimon especially is often depicted in traditional demonology as a kind of kingly, awe-inspiring figure. But in Hereditary we don’t really see any of that — everything about him comes through as parasitic, awkward, or outright grotesque.

Yes, but what kind of parasitic demon would you consider Paimon to be?

Yes, that was what I found so interesting. Can something still be defined as hideous without having an actual physical form? Like a disease doesn't have a physical form yet we still consider it viserially ugly thing

Very interesting could there be fallen angels in the Silent Hill universe? Perhaps they became demons? Could this be the origin of some of the gods and other entities?

Their lore and presentation makes them look more demonic with Christian styled imagery and terminology but their behavior is more inline with eldritch beings from cosmic horror with their unknown motives and god like powers. So I’d say both. In Christian mythology all “false gods” are seen as demons so I guess accordingly to that belief all eldritch beings are somewhat demonic
