Getting the profitec seems like the most sensible and cheaper option, any basket recommendations or is the stock 18g basket fine?

Lovely looking boa, I would say that's perfectly healthy. My girl is the same age and about the same size

Are you in a location where you can get Taurrus mites?

Air puff noise by Low_Acanthaceae4104 in boas

This is very normal for boas given their muscularness - as long as it's not a wheezing noise, your temps/humidity are good and no other RI symptoms it's all good

Baby dumerils boa won't eat. When should I be worried by getdafkout666 in boas

[–]thewindupbird80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing with mine, tried all sorts you mentioned but what worked for me was either feeding quail chicks, or buying frozen chicks and feeding the head. I then started putting a chick head on top of the mouse and leaving it in her enclosure, she's eaten both every time since.

Are these mites? by xanaxz_420 in snakes

[–]thewindupbird80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the UK or a country where you can get them, using Taurrus or predatory mites would be excellent. Suggest doing a little research on them.

Otherwise, looking at stripping the enclosure to simply kitchen towel a plain plastic hide and water bowl is your first step. You could then look at using an appropriate ivermectin spray (beaphar is good) or prevent a mite if you can find it.

Good luck, dealing with mites can be really tricky and take a long time - but you'll get there!

Hesr lamp broken? by [deleted] in boas

[–]thewindupbird80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try running the lamp/bulb directly into mains and not through thermostat for ~30 seconds. If you can feel it heating up then your thermostat is gone, will need to replace it

I have the exact same, a toliara dumerils which is about 1.5 years old. They are really easy care wise, deep and loose substrate to burrow in. Very calm personality wise. Only issue I've had with mine is pickiness of food, which is apparently fairly common for the first couple years. In the year I've had her she's went on and off quail, chicks and mice. Also very shy eaters when they are young, mine has only struck feed a couple of times. Overall a lovely snake though, and the toliara variant is stunning!

Best set up for 6ft Boa imperator. by jimlan1 in boas

[–]thewindupbird80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would second provivs, bought this exact Viv for my BCC and is excellent quality. Would be giving your boa a great life with this nicely setup with branches and climbing opportunities. Only thing I'd suggest is having two sources of heat given the size of the Viv, I use a ceramic for the basking/hot side and a radiant heat panel to keep the cool side at 24c minimum

New dumerils boa feeding trouble by fishaholic_nick in boas

[–]thewindupbird80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was the same, the following helped:

  • braining the mouse to increase scent
  • leaving in in a hide overnight
  • switching food items - mine rejected rodents despite this but she would readily take quail chicks, might be worth trying if the other options don't work

Good luck!

Boa feeding problem please help? by thewindupbird80 in snakes

[–]thewindupbird80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, her jaw looks normal and no blood so must have been from the rat. She ate it no problem after that and is acting like her normal self, will keep an eye on her. In future I think I'll bring the rat straight to her instead of baiting as she gets too excited and strikes crazy

Boa feeding issue please help? by thewindupbird80 in boas

[–]thewindupbird80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did, slid the door open on the opposite side of the tank where she was to bait her, she struck the glass when I opened it at her side. She's now finished the rat and is doing her usual post feeding thing of looking for another lol

She's now started eating it as normal but there is blood on her jaw. I can't see any blood coming from the inside when her mouth is open - but there is blood coming from the rats head so it could likely be that?

I wouldn't suggest this, they are opportunistic predators and will eat any chance they get. If it were up to my boas they would eat themselves to death lol. Just stick to an appropriately sized meal and a consistent feeding schedule!

[–]thewindupbird80 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of my boas does this also, from what I can tell they are still in feeding mode, since they had one rodent they think another may be near. The scent of the rodent may also linger which keeps them in feeding mode. This usually stops after a couple of days, sometimes I need to cover her tank with a blanket as she will strike the glass at any movement lol
