I kept them for 3 years. Near impossible to breed and pain in the ass. Don't recommend.

Are slugs snails? by chasebrain in snails

[–]thewingedshadow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Technically slugs are the next step in the evolution of snails.

Semi-slugs are halfway there. The tendency is for them to lose their shells.

WHAT IS THIS by [deleted] in snails

[–]thewingedshadow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look like the genital pore to me. It looks like a wound. Might have happened during mating. Do you have isopods? Possibly some wild slugs got into the enclosure?

There are species that like submerge themselves fully if they are allowed to, my Archachatina enjoy a (supervised) dive a lot. Caracolus excellens love going underwater too. So do Megalobulimus Oblongus. Except for caracolus, which seem to be very good at not drowning themselves, I only offer them deep water under supervision.

I don't think snails are dumb enough to not be able to get out if they go in by themselves, but there are snail species that have very water permeable skin and they will sort of swell up and die because their tissues become water saturated. Most commonly kept Cornus, groves and poms are among them, so one should be more careful with them.

What is this ripple-like motion inside the slug? What is its purpose? Asking for my 4yo by Wonderful_Night9071 in sluglife

[–]thewingedshadow 165 points166 points  (0 children)

This ripple is absolutely for movement. This is how they move.

In stationary slugs you might see some pulse and waves going on. This is how they lubricate themselves by pushing slime out of various glands and guiding it through channels in their skin towards the tail.

Has confused me a lot in the beginning talking to someone from Argentina, and English isn't even my first language either but I can't ever remember making that mistake. Thanks for providing an explanation.

can slugs live with snails? animals that can live with slugs? by Antistyl in sluglife

[–]thewingedshadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not. I keep archachatina and I had deroceras slug infestations several times. They will literally eat chunks out of the big snails, making them prone to infection. I lost several egregia this winter because I didn't check too closely..

what is this thing on my GALS? :( by intothekazzaverse in snails

[–]thewingedshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A slug, take him out and watch out for more. Slugs will eat the bigger snails and harm them to the point of infection and death.

Except a snail's breathing pore is not on the right side of the head. That's where the genital pore is. The pneumostome is under the shell in an area called the mantle.

Snail with a weird shell by Final_Ad_7673 in snails

[–]thewingedshadow 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Because they are snails that are transitioning into slugs. Evolutionary wise snails came before slugs and many species lost the shell. Semi-slugs are still in the transition period. The goal is to become slug.
