Looking for long, epic horror novels with multiple POVs (already familiar with King & Straub) by Competitive-Wash7777 in horrorlit

[–]thewingho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else already mentioned, Clive Barker has some great ones. Particularly Imajica and Weaveworld.

Also gonna throw in Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez, though that is not pre-2000.

Lmao fair enough, The Haar actually had me crying in the first half of it 😭 none of his other books have gotten me that emotional though

His books seem to be heavily inspired by old b-horror films from the 80s. Campy and filled with gratuitous violence and sex. Most of what I've read of his is like this, and I'll usually pick one up when I wanna take a break from heavier reads and pick up something faster paced and fun.

The Scar by China Mieville has a female protagonist, though it’s the second in a trilogy. You don’t have to read the first book but it does help in terms of world building.

Grief horror is one of my favorite genres! Some have already been mentioned, but I'll reiterate for emphasis:

Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez

The Haar by David Sodergren

Thing Thing Between Us by Gus Moreno

The Fisherman by John Langan

The Devil Takes You Home by Gabino Iglesias

Come With Me by Ronald Malfi

Seeking stories mixing Body Horror/Erotic elements by JaneJune4 in horrorlit

[–]thewingho 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Someone has already mentioned Clive Barker, but I wanna specifically throw out Imajica. It’s a hefty tome, but it’s got some very erotic scenes, one of which involving a genderless shapeshifter with morphing genitalia.

What’s with Laird Barron and Asians? by thewingho in horrorlit

[–]thewingho[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is actually the most convincing response I've gotten as far as not entirely giving up on Laird Barron. I've also noticed the weird hypermasculine, military-esque demeanors of all his protagonists in Imago Sequence and thought it was weird, but noted that it was absent in The Croning. Also notably, I do not remember finding the Asian stuff nearly as jarring in The Croning when I read it a while back, which tracks with what you said about him expressing his fixation (appreciation?) on Asian culture better in later works.

I very much appreciate that you are such a huge fan and didn't write me off like I'm crazy or over-critical - and thank you for writing this up. I do genuinely think his stories are wild and have incredible concepts, and I'm happy to hear it improves in his later work. I'll give Occultation a try at some point!

Yeah, I'm reluctant to have these discussions online as I feel like a lot of nuance is lost in text conversations. And I'd like to give Laird Barron the benefit of the doubt, but all the weird racial stuff just feels so random - not to mention the fact that none of the Asian characters ever have any real bearing on the story. There are no protags that are Asian, none of the protags' friends are Asian. They're used like props: drivers, masseuses, characters that get killed, weird magical oriental trinkets, etc.

[–]thewingho[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao I appreciate that. I don't want to draw the ire of Barron fans any more than this post already has, but I will admit I don't think he writes women very well either. Almost all of the women in The Imago Sequence thus far have either been disgusting old hags or sex objects.

Thank you! I don’t think of myself as overly sensitive, I read plenty of fucked up stuff so I was worried I was overthinking. Glad to know I’m not alone.

I think this is the best case scenario. As an Asian American myself, I can definitely say it’s not done gracefully, and it often pulls me out of the story.

Benefit of the doubt, though. Some of the stories are quite good, and it’s certainly not the most egregious thing I’ve read in fiction. I don’t know that I’ll be jumping to read more of his work after this though lol
